It wasn’t a capital offense. It was a 400 lb man having a heart attack when he resisted arrest, resisting arrest, which was precipitated by his breaking the law. Don’t like the law? Change it.

Authorities are saying they used a plan for a free speech demonstration but they obviously mischaracterized the crowd that showed up well armed for a rumble.
All the more reason to have an overwhelming force would be because it was thought the protestors had weapons.

No, it was due to the ignoramus resisting arrest. The cops were doing what Destupido wanted them to do, arrest people selling cigs and cutting NYC out of taxes. He'd been arrested many, many times before. He knew the drill. Get arrested, go to jail, he's been there many times, get out and go back to breaking the law. He is directly responsible for his own death. Too many blacks resist arrest and are harmed. Do not resist, your life matters, don't give the police a reason to kill you.
