Hats off to Ben. He completely out coached the other guy. To me, he was the mvp because of the defensive adjustments he made in the second half. And I salute our kids. They played a hell of a game. They went out there to win it, and thedid it with determination and grit.

Washington just didn’t shoot 77% in the second half. Iowa made a couple of good half tine adjustments. But a lot of the second half was UW shooting poorly (as compared to the 1st half). Plus that UW player who injured his back/neck left them a void they couldn’t fill. He only played a couple of minutes in the second half.

Why did they shoot poorly Joel? Let me help.....because of our defensive adjustments made them work harder to get good looks.

It wasnt simply that, oops, UW didnt just shoot well (bad luck) and we won.

Not sure if that is what you were implying but kind of seems like it.

Teams dont go from shooting 77% to 30% or whatever one half to the next without the opposing team having something to do with both. Bad def vs good def.

UW definitely came back down to earth, yes, but Iowa's defense was much better in the 2nd half.

Gee, I wonder why Washington shot so poorly in the second half? Do you suppose the Iowa defense had anything to do with it? LOL

You sound like the TV announcers. All Washington all the time with excuses for everything. Hell, Ben brought his Drake team to the BIG. His PG started his career at D-II. Washington has a tremendous size advantage over Iowa. Make all the excuses you want. Iowa traveled 2,000 miles, played a game at 10 p.m. Iowa time in Seattle, spotted the home team a 7-point halftime lead, and won it going away. Those are the facts.

Yates going down with injury in a tie game was big. He was the hottest shooter in 1st half.

We changed our coverage in 2nd half and the huskies shooting regressed to the mean,as they are not a good shooting team overall

As one of the hawks said" coach was mad at us at halftime"....it worked!

Exactly if you look at the 8 3s attempted on both halves. First half like last 2 made in final minutes guy caught in rhythm and in space where sage was late getting over to.

2nd half guys weren’t getting shots up with as much space as the first and was lot more pressured and contested shots. I’m beating a dead horse but when you watched Fran’s zone it made me want to pull my hair out on how many wide open shots were attempted. Sometimes our best D was just hoping other team had an off night.

How was the Washington coach “out coached”? The phuquin’ ball didn’t go in the hole the second half. And Sprinkle never took a shot!
Did Mac get “out coached” the first half… or did everything Washington throw up there just go in?
A lot of this thread is just conjecture… and ignores the game of basketball.

Has nothing to do with a coach being “out coached”…Yes, Iowa made some defensive adjustments but in addition (and more importantly) Washington shot 38% that half. Washington’s defense was not that strong either half.

Ben has some beautiful offensive sets in his tool kit. The 2nd half was a thing of beauty.

4 TO’s for the game, 1 being the shot clock violation at the end of the game.

🤌🏼
Their first half wasn’t that bad either, offensively. They played better in the second half but
first half was better than usual point wise.
But then, this Iowa team is well coached and fundamentally sound. That has never been a point of discussion, has it?

I thought the announcers were pretty damn fair/ honest all game. Washington is a decent team and this was a “big game” for them. They have a couple of really nice players… that big center (Schneider?) was really effective against us most of the night.

Fran's team would either give up wide open 3s or easy drives to the basket. The Gessel and Woodbury teams seemed to play some dee though.

Jesus if you have to ask you either don’t know or didn’t see.
the ball coverage on pick and roll was totally different. Yes the shooting was bound to regress to average that’s because our defenders were in better spots because we dictated to the offense not vice versa.

Yes…but does that mean the Washington coach was “out coached”? Washington **** “more normal” in the second half.. and Tgey lost one of their starters basically for the rest of the game early too.
McCollim made good adjustments at half time… but he also admitted post-game his pre-game preparation for UWashington was very poor.
It was a very enjoyable game to watch And the only thing I’m dogging here is those who say McCollum “outcoached” Sprinkle. .

Oh Gus, but I do. We just see things through a different perspective.
Again… how was Sprinkle “out coached” by McCollum in the second half. There are a couple of very logical explanations for what happened. Is is necessary that one coach “out coach” the other coach… or can the players on the floor actually make the difference in the game and its final outcome??
UIowa picked up its game defensively in the second half. UIowa wins the game because of their on-court performance…maybe the players paid attention at half time?

Oh they do Gus. They do. I’m thinking if the game would have gone a straight 40 minutes with no “half time” UWashington wins the game.,It’s amazing what happens when players leave the floor, go to the locker room take a pee, listen to the coach talk for 5 minutes and then return to the floor for a second half of basketball to their ability to shoot and pass the basketball. Hot Teams can go cold, and cold teams can turn hot! It’s amazing but it’s basketball. I have seen it many, many times at all levels of basketball competition. As I am sure you have too.

I believe Washington was very young, too. That’s a factor to consider..Didn't they start a couple of frosh and sophomore and a senior? Their center is going to be $$$ for them to keep, I think.

Yeah, in the first half the hawks were not if position to stop ball reversal and passing around the arc so UW had lots of uncontested shots. In the 2nd half the hawks were really stopping the screen plays out by the arc and in some cases we always had two players almost double team the ballhandler off that screen and force him to the sideline. This really disrupted their timing, their shotclock time, and tempo.

Great adjustments and hustle.

Exactly. And my point by “out coached” was that the Washington coach couldn’t counter that and make the necessary adjustments. And I do think coaching matters quite a bit. Yes, players must execute, but if coaching wasn’t as critical as players making their shots, as someone on this thread seemed to be implying, we’d still be coached by Todd L.

Absolutely correct here. As I recall, Ben said that the players got into drop coverage, allowing uncontested freedom on the perimeter. After a persuasive speech at half, that situation was rectified.

Oh in game and halftime coaching adjustments are very critical. Steve Alford was many times at a total loss on how to combat and adjust to other teams workings. George Raveling was a great recruiter but I watched so many of his games where he would call a timeout and nothing changed as the hawks were getting spanked on both ends. Not a clue. Fran couldnt adjust on the defensive end because he DIDNT KNOW AND COACH DEFENSE,

We see we have a coach who can make adjustments and FINISH a game. We have one of the brightest minds in the game and the future is exciting. Just watch - as McCollum continues to elevate the roster …
He has a great motion offense that has the intent to get layups and dunks which are 95% baskets. He really needs to get a top point guard and a couple tall guy very soon to keep the team getting better.

His offense is a bit of the PRinceton offense with the screen and rolls, give and go layups and the spacing and backdoor cuts. I love the motion and offense. And we can see that even while being a shorter team they really rebound and get position. It does remind me of the upswing in detail etc with coaches Miller, Olson, Davis, and yes Fran on the offensive end
