Our offensive line

I saw mostly positives from yesterday’s game: Mills improved, Washington is blazing fast and elusive, Martinez played well, our receivers are good, and our defense was fantastic.

Our kicking game is bad for obvious reasons, but what—if anything—can be done to fix our offensive line issues? Are they physically overmatched, or is it more of an inexperience issue, particularly at center?

I sure can't put my finger on it. I can't fathom why Martinez is running for his life and there's penetration in the backfield altering the play with 5 blocking 3.

The "experienced" right side of the line is REALLY struggling---both Wilson and Farniok, which is disappointing

I was listening to radio pregame and Brenden stai was saying there probably no physical over matched as much as getting the correct line checks called. And that takes game experience. Remember the starting center was playing tight end in high school two years ago. Myself If Brenden is correct then the line should be vastly improved by game 8

Thanks for sharing. That’s something to feel hopeful for.

I think Martinez’s issues this year are that he is getting pressured right away frequently and we lack a consistent running attack.

Guys cutting their hair isn't going to make the offensive line any better can't believe I have to say that.

Well the first thing that sticks out is the long hair, those two don’t look very intimidating. It’s there right but don’t they realize that they’d be a lot cooler body temperature wise if they cut it.

I see a lot of bad weight around the gut, small wrists and narrow shoulders which is a recruiting issue, and pants that don't fill out nearly as much...it's both recruiting and development.

And if the guys on the OL, collectively as a unit, don't like it then get better and prove me wrong. GBR

Our fanbase hated TA for the same reason, that kid was spectacular under the same circumstances.

It needs to get fixed, from the roots. Complete overhaul.

I'd put Matt Farniok's wrists up against any of their's. Plus #68 in blue pissed his pants. Our olinemen aren't pants pissers.

Talent needs an upgrade but he guys we do have should have improved compared to last year

The buzz word since the new hire has been development - have our individual lineman improved/developed compared to last year?

does frost's oregon offensive system require more from an offensive linemen, then lets say a dr. tom system run the ball system or bill walsh west coast system?

after watching vedral play Im a lot less nervous with martinez running the ball

I don’t think it’s Matt Farniok’s long hair that’s causing opponents not to be intimated. They have this thing called game film that takes care of that.

Really hope there’s a young guy on the roster who will leapfrog him at some point.

No, the fan base got frustrated with TA because when he got pressured he turned his back to the offense to scramble and then turned and threw a YOLO ball.

The big difference between Martinez and TA is that Martinez keeps his eyes/body pointing down field when scrambling and usually doesn’t throw players off his back foot with his eyes closed. It is hard to even hold them on similar levels when they face pressure. Martinez is way, way better at handling it.

Teams better than NIU are going to continue to exploit this weakness. Our defense is actually good this year, but they can never get off the field because our offense either gets a long td or punts. We can’t sustain drives.

OL takes the most time of any position group to develop. We're seeing that. NU hasn't had a really good center since what, Raiola? Taylor? We're seeing that, too.

Jaimes looked like he isn't coming back any time soon with how long he was down and going straight to the locker room.

The future is now for a lot of guys you would love to have toiling in obscurity for 3 years before they become starters. Get used to growing pains with flashes of promise.

Small wrists huh?

Yup and body fat composition. Some guys can't flip that switch, notice how ND's OL body fat composition is lower for guys their size, which is also a big product of development, which we don't have cuz we're throwing younger guys on the field.

Look that might be the best OL in the country but we need to compare or have a semblance of comparison, not such a drastic disparity, IMO. GBR

Maybe it was just me, but it seemed they didn't much better the 2nd half of the game. Martinez was getting more that .5 sec to do anything. They were opening up a few more holes for Mills. Still far from where they should be, but looked a bit better to me.

Yes sir.

Our OLine has a long, long ways to go. I don't mean to attack the coaching of them because they're so young and the coaches mostly have no choice in the matter. I'm just not sharp enough to really know how long it usually takes to build a pipeline (after Smiling Mike.....starting with almost nothing). It very well just might take way longer than I want. Heh.....I'll just hang in there with the rest of you. :)

TO's OL rarely saw starters other than RS Jrs and Srs. Will Shields played as a freshman, but he is a NFL HOFer. Long way to go, long way...GBR

Given how inexperienced Jurgens is, I've really wondered if that's one of the major issues. The line calls can make a huge difference, and he hasn't even been playing the position for a year yet. No matter how sharp you are, that's the kind of thing that takes time and experience to really nail down.

in the hippies defense they do seem to have bigger guns and lower center of gravity, which can be a good thing

They are going to get better week by week. While it was only NIU, NIU hadnt given up a 100 yards to single rusher in 18 games. The zone game looked better than it has all year. Credit Mills for seeing the lanes as well... Also the line didn't commit any penalties...

This, Offensive line is 1 position group that can improve vastly without a personnel change from week to week. They will continue to gel and wont be great, but we are hoping they're good enough to beat Iowa and Wisconsin by years end. Pull 1 miracle against OSU, and progress enough to do the former and this team might just live up to expectations....... or they might go 6-6.

I can’t wait till Benhart, Corcoran and those guys are sophomores and up. We are so ready for the next round of lineman.

Sorry but 6-6 won’t be the number. It will be 8-4 with 7-5 as the bottom.

Next week will be Yyuuuggee if we get improvement and beat Illinois on the road, it sets up well. We can give tOSU a shot and close out the 1st half of the season. Let's beat them!!! GBR
