Our fascination with offense

So much discussion about this offense and that offense all the way back to T.O. days. I am just curious, how many of you really think the offense has been the problem for post-T.O. coaches? I've always believed our biggest downfall has been terrible defense followed closely by declining line play. We used to hurt people on defense ('99 Fiesta Bowl, etc).

Even under T.O, I always felt defense was what let us down most of the time in our off years. Maybe not all the time, but most of it. I'm far more interested to see what happens on that side of the ball from the spring game onwards.

Defense keeps you in almost everything.

Unconventional scheme offense heavy on run. Recruit high star graded defensive players focusing on the front 7.

Would love to see most of the focus on stars going to O line, D line. Great kickers, and at least one legitimate super fast, tough, fearless return man.

Suh would have won a championship if there was an offense in 2009.

TLee and his pick-6's and INTs cost us games. The offense was an issue the first few games of the season in 2017.

Tim Beck's offenses weren't too shabby.

Blowout losses where we lost by 30+ were due to poor defenses, but also a poor offense. Otherwise the scores would have been 50+ vs 40+ instead of 50+ vs 15+.

If Frost's offense puts up 50 points a game, I bet we win at least 6 games! Winking

I would say line play both ways has been the biggest problem. There are plenty of other problems...but they tend to flux year to year. Recall just how BAD the oline was Suh's senior season. Overall - things have been downhill from that point.

In terms of offensive linemen, there can be a difference between actual talent and development/play on the field.
I count 66 P5 teams, and there are 33 NFL teams. Apparently teams target 9 slots for the OL on their rosters. So that's 288 OLinemen in the NFL. I count 7 NU NFL Olinemen currently. Richie (just post-pipeline) and Slauson (Cally recruit/Pelini when drafted) are older vets and the other 5 are more recent.
If each P5 team had an equal number of Olinemen, each should have 4.36 players in the NFL. For comparison in terms of OL representation on NFL rosters, Michigan has 6, MSU has 5 (counting a long snapper), Minnesota has zero. The two teams that have outplayed NU in terms of offensive line play in recent years have 7 (Wisco) and 9 (Iowa, counting a long snapper).
I think we clearly had talent in our OL room over the years and still do. What we have lacked is the training and coaching to maximize that talent.

You're setting yourself up for a major letdown if you think Nebraska is going to average 50 a game.

It's interesting that 3 players from that line were on NFL rosters.

Very well done
Great info

The bad line play has not been a recruiting problem (maybe for depth...I would buy into that) but a training, coaching, execution problem. Guys hurt alot...guys sucking badly...alot.....all adds up to getting boat raced when playing the really good teams.
