NBC's TV audience for the summer Olympics is down a whopping 45% from the Rio games in 2016. Viewership in prime-time is even worse, down 51%.

I don't really care for the Summer Olympics much. I usually do at least have them on in the room when I'm doing something else though. This time, I haven't even done that but maybe twice. I haven't even kept up with the medal count. Just too much politics and protest for me to watch something I don't really like anyway. They gave me an excuse not to watch, and I used it. Instead I've been beating my head up against a wall while watching the Braves. The bumps have been receding a bit lately, but it's looking like some new ones tonight.

I watched a few minutes the other night and the coverage was about 10% an actual sports event, 40% human interest stuff, and 50% commercials. Really really boring to be honest.

I’ve watched a fair amount, or at least it’s been on, but the coverage is awful. No continuity of events. They may show a qualifier race of the 800 and thirty seconds later show a medal race in the 200. It doesn’t help that the telecast is up to a day and a half behind Twitter. NBC has become the worst network on TV.

I feel like there was almost no lead up to it. Nobody watches network television anymore, huge difference even in just the last 5 years. So you don’t get that build up of anticipation seeing previews.

And it seems like all the US athletes poopoo USA or are protesting something. That could have something to do with it, or maybe not.

ETA: I don’t give a **** about almost any of the sports. Canoeing, power walking, water polo…seems like every time I turned it on an Olympic channel they’re playing 17ing water polo.

Biggest reason is people consume the content differently than even 5 years ago. I've seen a ton of olympics on FB, twitter etc. We just watch clips now. Its not appointment tv anymore.

Good point there. Winter Olympics has Curling, or rather, Women’s Curling. Which means at least one or two smoking hot Canadian chicks in yoga pants and bowling shoes squatting down and sliding about 50 yards across a hockey rink while shooting fire from their eyes in a death stare.

I've been watching every day. The political agenda stuff has been overblown. Besides the soccer team and a couple other track and field women, every other athlete that has won a medal has said how great it was to represent our country. On a side note, there's a lot of talent in the women's indoor volleyball games if you know what I mean.

- I am convinced much of the drop in viewership is due to the time zone difference and delay in televising events. Yuge part of the drop.
- The inability to stream events right after they happen is massively frustrating and also cant help things. So its either see the event live or find out what happened online a day before you can watch the event. That sorta removes much of the desire to watch.
- I wonder if streaming counts. If not, it should. **** needs to change for 2024- content needs to be sent out live and be available right away once completed so there is motivation to watch before finding out the results.

I have watched 20 men's and women's beach volleyball matches, a few indoor volleyball matches, and a couple basketball games. Thats it. Its usually a ton of swimming, gymnastics, equestrian, and track events too- but not knowing when they are on plus it being delayed made me not care. Oh, and some isnt even available for replay too. Terrible.


For all those who wont watch because athletes are protesting- seriously evaluate what % are protesting. I cant imagine being so sensitive and thin skinned that I write off the entire Olympics just because a handful of people from the US hold their fist up at some point during multiple weeks. F17S.

When I read this post, at first I was like "Constantly? There are 613 US Olympians in Tokyo. A single (or low double) digit subset of that has made any kind of public comment, remark, hand gesture, etc. What makes him think there's just constant wokeness on display at the Olympics?"
