Hey guys, this is a public service announcement ***

There have been a bunch of threads lately about troubles with DirecTV, cable, etc. I was never looking to be a cord cutter really but was tired of paying $150/mo for DirecTV and still having to deal with their squabbles with certain programming providers. So, in July I did the 7-day free trial and told myself that if I found anything about YouTubeTV that felt like lesser service then I’d just stick with DirecTV. Three days in I called DirecTV and cancelled, even paying the $100 cancellation fee and having to fight off a dozen “but what if we lowered your bill to...” appeals by their retention specialists.

So, I’m paying about $50/month for up to 6 devices, I get all my local channels, all the sports channels, I can watch TV if it rains, I can record anything Mississippi State related automatically, I don’t have to worry about YouTube and some local provider having a tiff, and just like YouTube, the app learns the shows I like and offers me recommendations of other stuff I might like.

I’ll reply to my own post here with a copy of YouTube TV’s FAQ’s for those who are interested but not inclined to go to their site and check it out.

I just signed up with You Tube TV this afternoon once I realized the likelihood of UVerse being blacked out for our game....it really seems like a good service and I can watch on computer, phone, and stream to my tv.....at 79, if I can do it, anyone can and it begins with a 7 day free trial with cancellation at any point.....

better than hulu?

i have 4 tv in man cave - how do i watch 4 different games

We watch different shows on different TVs at the same time all the time...if that makes sense.

You can watch on up to 6 different devices at the same time and each one can watch its own game.

Absolutely the best Streaming service. Unlimited DVR included, all the different devices that can be logged in at once, watch from my phone just as well as a TV.

YouTubeTV also have the best operation and navigation.

Another cool thing is you can log on from a computer and set up the guide with the channels in the order of your choosing.

You can also setup different accounts under the same subscription. Keeps your DVR free from the stuff you don't want to watch.

What is the experience switching back and forth between channels.

Easy and fast, just push the down arrow on the remote and the last 5 things you watch pop up. It will let you switch between live TV and recorded shows too.

It is about double the satellite delay in my experience.

I would say anywhere from 20-30 seconds

Those two times don't match. If it's just double the satellite delay, it should be about 1/4 second ... noticeable, but not a game killer. I've noticed when I watch a State baseball game on my Roku it's several seconds behind the real action, much more than the speed of light would cause. Even live, over the air signal from local stations is different from my Dish for the same local station signal by a little, which could be mostly due to the speed of light. Gotta factor in some signal processing time in the receivers (your box) and the transmitters (the satellite) too. Some broadcasts have a several second built-in delay so they can delete "cuss words" too, but it doesn't always work.

I have it and absolutely love it too. However just realized the first downside. Thursday night NFL games that air on NFL Network are not available.

I was going to do the trial for Hulu live and Youtube tv and choose between the 2, but I never got around to setting up youtube. I don't think you could go wrong with either one. I stopped Directvnow when they increased the price with very few sports channels.

Golf Channel - yes. And Tennis Channel, which I had never watched much before, but YouTubeTV kept suggesting it on my home screen so my wife (good tennis player) and I must have watched about 5 or 6 full matches including that final which was awesome.

It also seems to know what I watch at what times of day. In the morning it always suggests Squawk Box on CNBC unless it’s a Saturday when it suggests College Gameday or SEC Nation.

At night it will suggest SEC Live or some food network show my wife likes. Pretty cool. I almost never use the guide anymore.

It’s also ridiculously easy to set up the recordings. When your watching a Mississippi State game and hit “add to library” it will offer you things like:

Record all College Football?

Record all Mississippi State sports?

Record all SEC Sports?

Or today Record all Big12 sports?

It could not be any more user friendly.

One more cool feature:

When you pick your favorite teams it will ask you “hide scores from this team?” So that when you record a game to watch it later the score doesn’t show up in your recording.

If you get home after a game starts and want to start watching the recording it will ask you “watch from beginning?” or “watch from live?”, meaning pick up where the game is right now.

If you have to leave your tv while watching a recorded show, when you come back it will ask you if you want to watch from the beginning or where you left off?

Maybe satellite has changed since I have used it last, but I remember it being 8-10 seconds behind antenna TV.

It's not that much now. Maybe a second or two. If I hit "recall" from satellite to OTA, it's very close and channel change on my Hopper 3 is less than a second. On the old Hopper, it took forever.

It's very noticeable and maybe that long, maybe longer, between watching on Roku and genuine real time (like somebody actually in the stadium and posting updates).

Love YouTube TV. This may improved since I set it up, but to get the MSU baseball games I had to record all "College Baseball". Not a big deal though.

Another YTTV tip is that if your spouse has to have the Hallmark Channels, just add another cheap service like Philo or Frndly.

I recently tested Hulu Live and now am testing YouTube TV. Hulu easily has better picture quality for me. I don't see a whole lot of difference between the 2 other than that. Hulu probably has a lot more content.

Holy crap.. a 300 gb cap? I just looked at ours on the AT&T app. We used 581 gigs in our house last month.

I guess thats the next next thing AT&T will do after everybody switches to steaming. They’ll cap data.

Looks like we have a DirecTV employee on the board. He actually downvoted the FAQ’s copied directly from the YouTubeTV website. Classic.
