I have not listened to WSP in about 8 years until today. Their music used to be a regular sound in my life for a long time. Then I just grew away from them. Met them several times and they were always super cool.

So today I listened to the Street Dogs album and thought it was terrible. I know they are not a studio band but they have produced some good studio material in the past.

Do yall listen to their new stuff, go to shows or what. Whats going on with them.

I think Street Dogs largely was meet with positive reviews, but I don't listen to their studio stuff that much. Saw them two or three times in 2015. Still rockin.

Yea Its been so long since I have listened to them, I will spin the album again. There were some great solo's by Jimmy.

I didn't see were they are playing at Thalia Mara Hall. If so I would probably go. Robert Plant is coming soon.

I've listened to the new album...

It's not as good as some of their best albums but I think it's solid. It's certainly better than the one they put out a few years ago (Dirty Side Down).

I've also seen them a few times over the last few years and they still put on a great live show.

I just started Dirty Side Down and have heard the first 3 songs. My first time listening to this one as well.

They are not showing them coming to Thalia Mara.

Jimmy sounds good on the new stuff and really great on any covers, but he can't play the Mikey tunes worth a damn, imo.
He has a totally different sound than Mikey did and it shows when he plays one of his songs....
This will be the 2nd time I've heard them with Jimmy in person vs the hundreds with Mikey, call me biased if you want.
I miss that Lingering Lead...

Yup they are coming to town and playing two nights. I am in the same boat with you Fishwater because I have only seen them once post MH. Heck we probably know each other.

This crazy I started listening to them today and just found out they are playing close by.

Back in the day they used to play in MS a lot. Didn't they get banned from Starkville lol?

From what I can remember a bunch of folks got popped at the show. Word got back to the band and they didnt agree with the way the law was running wild. And the law didnt like all the wookies in town.

My only WSP concert to attend was at Radio City Music Hall in NYC...one hell of a show...walked out half stoned and happy.

Stevens Cat, Honky Red, sell sell sell are solid tunes. Was at the Fox all 3 nights for NYE. As good as it gets. Tues night show was best. Covered Jessica wt Chuck Lavell on keys. Brought the house to its knees

Was at the show at amphitheater. A large mass of dirty hippies following at the time bum rushed entrace and the fence came down. That crowd either died or went to phish

I'm pretty surprised they are playing at Thalia Mara. Been an eternity since they played Jackson it seems. Kinda surprised considering the controversy at last summer's Southaven show (which was a good one, I like Duane Trucks on the drums, not gonna lie). Needless to say, I plan on being there. Ardenland is doing a good job of bringing shows to Thalia Mara and other Jackson venues. Govt Mule last April was great. Several other good shows upcoming with Robert Earl Keen and Tedeschi Trucks Band to name a couple.

You are right about this because I remember it now. They only had small gates to get in and they started playing and folks rushed in. Someone broke their leg.

Then it was another show/band at the Hump where all that I described above went down.

Saw them the first time at the Amphitheater May '92. Free concert and they let us bring coolers to the show (no fencing just walk across the street and you were there.

Here's the show http://www.panicstream.com/vault/widespread-panic-05021992-starkville-ms/

Used to drive out to Oak Mtn. and sit in the parking lot and listen to them but haven't done it in a number of years. My best show was NYE at the Fox '96. Got a free ticket the night before and drove the day of the show from Vicksburg to Atlanta by way of Starkville and then back to Birmingham. Atlanta to Birmingham in the thickest fog I think I've ever seen. Really dumb on my part as I had way to many beers to be driving....

The amphitheater show I think in 98 went well and was one of the best shows ever. The show at the hump was the one with all the arrests that supposedly caused them to get banned. That one was in 2000 or 2001.

There was someone with a table set up outside the hump selling whippets.

yeah the starkville show in 98 was good. and i got in free with the "dirty hippies". the later show that was at the hump was the ball buster. i was working at Flo and Eddies and i remember everyone walking down University on their way. cops were everywhere. hell they were pulling cars over and searching just for having a WP sticker on your window. was ridiculous.

on another note, a buddy of mine got wind on Monday of these shows. i got on Ardenland website around 8am and it let me order tickets. we got 6 tickets on row B in the orchestra pit. i literally paid for my tickets, and logged back on to get a friend another one, and it was locked. said they would go on sale Feb 19th. i called to verify, and they said they didn't know how i got on, but they would honor the tickets.

Thalia Mara hall is an interesting venue for them though to me. they don't allow drinking except in the main room and are real strict on the smoking. should be interesting to see the hippsters figuring out how to make a bong out of a seat cushion

I agree with Fish on this one. He can play but its just not the same band that I started listening to. I've been to a few shows with Jimmy and every time there is a moment in an old song where I just have to shake my head. All that being said I will be at Thalia Mara.

Yes it is different. Completely different sounds

It doesn't mean it is not good these days. It is just a completely different sound which is what I think they were going for. If they wanted to sound just like they used to they would have brought on Sam Holt

Best times of my life

Remember trying to find friends after shows with no cell phones? The best times.

I still make it a point to see them once a year. But I do not go to 30 a year like I once did. I'll be going to the Jackson shows at Thalia Mara.

I rarely listen to the new stuff and still enjoy the one or two I see live. But it hard to beat the chainsaw sound that was Tupelo 97.

This is a very interesting gig scene for them. When I saw Mule there last year there were plenty of bats going around. I am still up in the air about going. I will be seeing Plant. Debated about seeing TTB but I am passing them up. Just getting old and picky.

Studio albums have been iffy since til the medicine takes. Earth to America was decent. Been to a lot of shows but just lost interest. Wasn't blown away anymore. It just isn't the same w/o Mikey. I won't be going to the Jxn shows due to work but not sure I'd go anyways. Heard Streetdogs for Breakfast yesterday and it's garbage. Lots of friends still go and every show was "the best". I'm sure it will be great just don't care anymore.

No, they went after a good guitarist for hire and got one. He can't work the pedals like Mikey could and it shows on certain songs.

That made me laugh out loud... Half these kids never even heard Mikey play in person...
I just found an old VHS video that I took at the Dock back in 94.. Good stuff...

Went to Mule last April at Thalia Mara..... It's set up extremely archaically for rock concerts (or any concert for that matter) where patrons are going to want to buy beer or other refreshments. They had beer and merch carts in the upstairs main lobby, but had a concession style "bar" set up downstairs where the restrooms are.

It's definitely geared more towards a musical or symphony performance, and it's fairly small. I imagine it'll shrink pretty quick.

Saw them at Memorial Hall in Chattanooga which is very similar to Thalia Mara and there was no booze sold there, so I guess Thalia Mara has that in it's favor.

Just because you have gotten older and your priorities have changed doesn't mean it's garbage.
Yes it's different, but it is still better than a majority of the 'garbage' being played today.

My first show was in 92 at State and I went to a shitload after that. It isn't the same, but how often do things like that really stay the same? **** changes......

MH was a hard guy to try to replace. Looking back in time the main reason I got away from them was it just didnt feel the same anymore. They didnt sound the same.

Its kind of like taking Trey away from Phish, Page from Zep and Garcia from the Dead.

I was the ripe old age of 14 when he passed, and had obviously not gotten into WSP at that age. Wish I would have, though, as even now I prefer listening to archived shows and albums of the Mikey-era. I just prefer his sound to Jimmy's, and that's nothing against Jimmy, because he is good in his own way.
