OT: West Point to 82 southbound

Any MDOT folks on here that can say why this stretch of road resembles something you’d drive on in a 3rd world country?

It's that way to draw your attention away from the abysmal condition of Hwy 25 from Renfroe to Louisville.

I agree that it’s awful but I travel 45 regularly and the stretch from Okolona to 82 is probably the worst. They have been steadily paving 45 in sections for a few years. That section has to be next because they have started cutting out and patching the worst spots.

They are working on resurfacing that stretch....but their timing of that going on during the fall is terrible.

And I'm not MDOT, but they have been resurfacing the worst parts for the last couple of weeks, and if you can believe it the resurfacing may be making it worse.

The right hand lane on 25 from Louisville south to the 19 underpass is unbelievable. I don’t know what happened. I’ve been on smother gravel roads.

We could have Highways as smooth as the autobahn and that wouldn’t change.

My Mom and Dad ran into a couple from Indiana while on vacation one time and they asked if they needed to divert around Mississippi in their motor home or chance it going through. To “divert” from where they were, they would have had to go north from Birmingham to Nashville and 40 across to Little Rock.

Dad started to tell them they definitely should.

It's not all bad. 45 is bad in stretches. 49 is bad in stretches. Roads in and around Jacktown suck. But many are in good shape, too. 82 is fine. 6 is fine. The interstates are fine outside of Jackson.

I'm sure this is true for a lot of states.

The long wheelbase of a MH reacts differently than a car. The worst roads are the concrete ones with expansion joints. Those joints are just the right distance apart to start a MH to porpoising.

Was driving through Texas a few years ago, a big difference i noticed in road repair was how deep they dig out the preexisting road and fill. I don't see us doing much of this, I'm assuming this is one reason our paving jobs seem to get in bad shape so quickly - especially in areas with expansive clay?

You would be correct to an extent, then we also use river rock in many areas, which is not the best, but available.

To make this sports related, blame Auburn...

For years DOT mixes have been heavily influenced by NCAT (National Center for Asphalt Technology). Today's "superpave" mixes contain proportionately more sand and RAP, which make our roadways more "tender" and less durable than our granddaddys asphalt.

NCAT is in Auburn and hires a lot of barn grads since it's located right down the street from another Auburn-ran entity that creates products also well known for its willingness to compromise reliability, CoachComm.

Actually, my home state of Mississippi doesn't have anything on the northern half of South Carolina. I can't remember the last time I actually saw a stretch of highway being resurfaced here. The prevailing attitude seems to be "Patch, patch, & re-patch."

Highway 45 is pretty smooth north of Booksville and south of the southern Noxubee County line.

I wonder if they skipped Noxubee County because its population is majority black.
