Yeah, this is no bathing suit thread. I wish. No, this is about my deployment to Miami in 1992. Hurricane Andrew pretty much wiped out Homestead Florida and they needed to get relief to our citizens. This was my first duty station out of school. Being a combat stores ship (supply) they sent us to help out.

I remember having liberty in the evening while we were there. I was mess cranking at the time. "Mess cranking" is enlisted duty that every new recruit will have to do when they get to their first command. Where we ate was called the mess hall. Where they cook and prepare the food is called the galley. Where they clean the dishes and utensils used to prepare the food is called the scullery. But there are no pictures of those activities.

As far as the pics are concerned, you'll see us pulling out of Norfolk with the tug boats. You can see us pulling by the carriers as we head out of the bay on our way to sea.

Before we pull into Miami, we encounter some Cuban refugees in a disabled vessel and send out one of our dingies to rescue them.

We pull outside of Miami and begin vertical replenishment with the air detachment. The Sea Knights do their duty.

Ship's ladder. You don't want to miss a step!

It's SUPPO! (supply officer)

PC3 Scott. It looks all respectable. :p

Lt. "Doc" Levey

Bill Laguer, from Perth Amboy

Hernandez is the best I can recollect.

Pulling into port

Once in port, most have liberty unless on duty rotation. I'm not sure why I don't have any pics outside of this. But this is before smartphones in your pocket. :D

I was told not to take my camera out in town. The guys were worried about it being "evidence". Great pics! Miss the Navy

Wow a Navy thread! I had some night flight ops on video, Tomcats taking off, one of the last times they were used before we went to the FA-18s

I'll have to find my old camera.

Thank for the pics Boxes brings back memories, was the Enterprise in port that day?

I forgot to mention that many of us volunteered in the community while in port.
