I think they will have to change the "Washington" part as well.

The Cherokees were the worst example that I am aware of.. they adopted western ways.. education, language, schooling, even religion and dress.. and still they got booted out to Oklahoma. Nearly every other case you see examples of native attacks on settlers. But that Cherokee example... I think that shows it would have happened regardless... as long as they were on valuable property (like in the Black Hills).

BTW.. pre-contact with Europeans.. native tribes practiced slavery and wars for territory. Anyone tearing down their statues.. telling them to change their tribe names?

This only bothers pussies??? I'm no bleeding heart liberal but man we treated native Americans like shite. How about teams called the new York kikes, Chicago guineas, Boston Mics or Cleveland Pollocks.
Would only pussies be against that?

I'm Italian ... if they changed the name to Greasy WOPS, I'd think it was hilarious.

I'm not one to judge what offends others, but I always thought the Redskins logo was very dignified and noble looking. The name...I can see how that could offend, but the logo was great.
I don't see how Redskins is more
Offensive then being called pale face.

I'll go for the Dumb Polocks.
Wrong Way Corrigan would be our first signee.

I can say this since I have one vowel and enough z's in my last name that you would think that I was sleeping.

As a fellow Irishman, I've got enough of a spine to point out what's wrong. It's not just the people of Washington with a native American population of.0003 native Americans it's those living on reservations with no running water, healthcare or education. Because we took over the land they lived on for 10,000 years not a couple hundred but 10,000 years. So I'll work on my spine while you work on growing a brain. Deal?

And dropping the name Redskins helps solve these problems how?

Are you prepared to return your property to its rightful owners?

Can someone please tell me what changing a team's nickname or tearing down statues helps solve a single problem?

Bruh,

Do you even feelings

So this is about hurting someone's feelings? That's it?
Again what does any of this accomplish? What does the fact that Andrew Jackson, George Washington or Thomas Jefferson owned slaves have to due with racial injustice today? You want to have a debate about Confederate monuments, OK fair enough. That's about people who denounced this country.
But tearing down statues of Lincoln, Frederick Douglas or defacing the monument to the 54th Massachusetts, that makes some one feel better?

The meme is untrue. A large group of salamanders is called a congress, but not of baboons.

And no, the Washington Baboons would NOT be a great name. It really, really would not. Please trust me on that one.
Hard to believe how ignorant some people can be. Baboons???and I think he was serious.

Guys, biggest issue with “Redskins” is that it is derived based on skin color. Not to mention, Washington DC should be the last place to honor our indigenous people who they all but wiped out, took their lands and put them in camps.
I don’t know, let’s worry about keeping color scheme.
The franchise is doing the right thing finally. I am sure they can come up with a good name.

I said I was done but couldn't resist. Today the supreme Court, in a ruling written by a Trump appointed justice, ruled that half of Oklahoma is actually tribal land. They pointed to the trail of tears, the forcible relocation of native Americans to Oklahoma. They said they are holding Congress to it's word. Real highpoint in American history that trail of tears.

Each country in the world has dark spots on it's history and the Trail of Tears was one of ours. I didn't read the SCOTUS decision but since that land was designated Indian Territory by the US government they should be compensated.
IMHO Native Americans were treated worse then blacks. As vile as slavery was there's never been a policy of genocide targeted at blacks,
"The only good Indian, is a dead Indian." - General Phil Sheridan

But once again what does changing a name do to make things better? Assuage white guilt? Make white people feel better about themselves?
Want to feel better about yourself? Donate to the American Indian College Fund instead of burning your Joe Theismann jersey. That accomplishes nothing.

Warriors with this classic old school look would be fine...

No good. Warriors is offensive. Ask Marquette.

Will it eventually filter down to Franklin Township HS too. They're paving the entrance so something could already be in the works.
What about NBHS Zebras. Is that offensive to prisoners ?
Sounds absurd, but where does it stop ?

Exactly the point. It will never stop. As long as one person is made to feel uncomfortable about one thing it'll never stop.

As I recall, the mascot was a Trojan looking white guy. So, not sure why they would change it, but who the hell knows. It would be funny if they changed it because the guy is NOT Native American.

The % of people offended by redskins name in the US is very low. All it takes is a mob of thousands to change something though these days. Go woke, go broke

yeah, good thing DC did a great job with those Insidious Americans that they only have a few people to be offended. I mean come on...they get free housing, great education, healthcare, drug rehabilitation and now they even get Casinos.
Why should those few have enough people to create a mob and interfere with our football.

How about the Lenin statue in Seattle? Nothing happening here, right?

In this case I thought it was just about the name?

Redskins bad (which a lot of us agree with), but Warriors is now bad too?

The present logo was designed by a Native American with the idea to make it a positive representation. Which is different than what the Cleveland Indians used to have.

So even if that is now considered bad the old one of Sonny Jurgensen shown earlier in the thread should be generic enough to pass muster.

When we can really answer that question, maybe it might make some sense on to what’s going on.

Doing away with nicknames that are related to Native Americans, could cause people, not to think of , or remember their place in our history.

Redskin I can see. Surprised it really lasted this long.

But Chiefs, Braves or Blackhawks seems okay to me.
I agree on both counts, but those last 3 may be on the chopping block (oops?) as well.

I am continually amazed that there are people, on both sides of this, that can't tell the difference between a slur and a not-a-slur.

The Redskin name and the Chief Wahoo emblem for the Indians are bad. Again, surprised they lasted as long as they did.

But the others? Not sure what the deal is there.

I got it...

Washington Windtalkers

A great way to honor Native Americans. A story that should always be told.

And the alliteration is great. Could still use the color scheme too.

Looks like "Warriors" is currently the leader.
But, I also read "Red Tails" as a possibility. Although this may well have some positive reference to Native Americans, it was also the knickname of the Black WWII pilots which had their plane's tails painted red.
