Went to Walmart this morning to buy some mulch. They're well stocked but absolutely nobody was working in the huge garden department. Had to go halfway across the store to the customer service desk, pay there, then go load it in my SUV. Nobody checked the receipt - I could have taken all I wanted.

It was hard for Walmart to go downhill, but they managed to do it.

I buy mulch there every spring. It’s the only thing I have purchased from that hellscape for the last 6 years.

I load the mulch up before even paying. Then I take a picture of the barcode, walk inside, and scan the barcode at the self checkout.
In and out of that place in a minute this way.

It's fast and easy, so I view it as a feature and not a failing.

Lowe’s is getting that way, but it’s very location specific. Some are well run and well staffed, others are like a poorly conceived Japanese market.

I don’t know. Taking something out of the store & loading it in my car before paying for it seems like a good way to get accused of shoplifting.

Lot of cameras in that place and undercover plain clothes security moving around. I know Walmart Olive Branch has 3-4 undercover security at all times roaming around. Don't think no one saw you or wasn't watching just because you didn't see a Walmart worker there with their store garb on.

The mulch isn't in the store. It's in the parking lot.

I don't go into the store until I know how much I am buying because I have loaded my car up.

Yeah, I guess an employee could say something eventually?...I have checked out at the garden area with an employee and they just scanned the barcode on my phone. They didn't even bat an eye.

They don’t care if you shoplift.

There's plenty of YouTube videos that show that's definitely not true everywhere. They may not appear to be watching, but they know a lot about what's going on in that store. I think they're fine with a small level of theft, but if someone is habitual about it, they'll probably get caught and prosecuted.

Maybe in some places. Walmarts lack of caring is frustrating to police in Shelby county, TN.

Downhill? They’ve been at the bottom of the hill for a while. I only do pickup or delivery at Walmart. I refuse to step foot inside and be amongst the dregs of humanity.

I got met at my car in the parking lot by 2 plain clothed store detectives. They wanted to see my receipt and then looked through my grocery bags in my car and found one item that I accidentally did not pay for. They didn't call the Police, as they accepted my response. I had a choice to either put the item back or pay for it at the customer service desk.

Did you do self checkout? It really pisses me off if I’m expected to do the work and then they try to check my work. You could’ve done it the first time.
but Walmart delivery is awesome.

I don't understand how Dollar General stays in business. I live in area with a populatuon of probably 30,000 people and there atleast 12 DG stores within 20-25 minutes of my house. Inventory management at most of them seems non-existent. There are more products in boxes on the floor and on carts there on the shelves. Nobody at the checkout counter - you have to squeeze and squeak a rubber chicken dog toy to get someone to come check you out.

slight thread hijack. Why did the Walmart in Starkville feel like it was 100 miles away from campus? I swear to god when I drove there I felt like I lost an entire day

It is a long way from campus.

Having the neighborhood market helps a ton.
My only complaint is that they should have made the gas part at least twice as big as they did.

Went to Dicks Sporting Goods here in Columbus last week looking for 2 different things. Went in the morning and I might have been the only customer in the store. Came close to 4 employees, none of which spoke and all avoided eye contact and got away from me as quickly as possible. Left without making a purchase and went to a local store where I received a warm welcome and help and finding exactly what I was looking for. I get the same ignored service treatment at Lowe’s most of the time. Small local businesses may be a little more expensive than the bog box stores but it is usually, but not always, a better experience. About 3 years ago I was trying to get a pair of boots for my wife. I went to Tractor supply, Mossy Oak, The Lowndes County co-op, and the Clay County co-op. Total failure. The Lady at the Clay County co-op at least acknowledged my presence but she was the cream of the crop that day. I came home less than happy, and in 5 minutes found exactly what I wanted on line and had it on the way. There was a small gun / ammo shop in Hamilton. I went in there twice looking for some reloading supplies. Two guys behind the counter. First visit the guy that finally waited on me seemed annoyed that I asked him a question. The second time those two behind the counter were talking to some guy about how he could fix a lawn mower. I waited for several minutes for them to say something. They looked up at me a couple of times but never said anything to me. I finally turned around and left. They are now out of business. Duh……

They are building DG's in every community I can think of, in places where no retail establishment has opened in decades. I am convinced that when the 666 guy in Revelation takes over, you'll have to get all your stuff at a DG. They are the countrified version of "15 minute" cities. **

My only surprise is that the one person working there didn’t stop you on the way to the parking lot asking if you’d like to leave a tip

They make the decision daily, like other retail and restaurants, to open even if there's not enough staff to open.

That's what happens when you pay employees welfare wages

You should try to get there now w/ downtown torn up, campus torn up, and 182 torn up. Its 82 or Lynn Lane, that's your choices

I just put on my flannel pajama bottoms, my big fuzzy slippers, my wife beater shirt and a silk do rag on my head, and walk around the store dragging my feet like the rest of them and fit right in**

Funny. When I went to the Customer Service counter to pre-pay for the mulch I later loaded, I asked if they delivered. The girl sorta smiled, and said yes they do but you can't really trust it. One said her mom ordered some item - can't remember what - and they took her a load of toilet paper. She might have been kidding but you never know.

Hell, that business model seems to work. Dollar General with that business model did run Freds Dollar store out of business. Maybe Walmart should look at it.

My last delivery from Wal Mart and from Lowe’s were brought by door dash drivers. Lowe’s had a tiny woman deliver two toilets to me. I had to help her.

I don't fully get the business model in bigger places, but they definitely provide a needed service for small communities that are now completely ignored by literally every other big retail name in the country.

Walmart has been in Starkville for a long time. Used to be a little closer in. I have no idea what's there now, but Remington Hunt Club was in part of the old Walmart I think.

I'm sure they located where they are now because they wanted to be on the bypass. All about traffic count.

Not long ago I went to Walmart garden area and the gate was locked. No one there to check you out as they used to do. I turned around and left. I do use their Market store as I order online and they do a good job getting my grocery items on time and with few errors. Beats going to the store. I use Aldi some but I go there to shop. Easy to get around and out quickly.

Just think if DG had put gas pumps in front of every store. Just imagine how many convenience stores they would have put out of business.

Where Walmart has one big *** store in one location that is probably 5 to 20 miles away from subdivisions DG has many small stores close to subdivisions. I have three DG with in 3 miles of me and I don't have to wait in line for ten minutes. Rankin county has I think three Walmart's that is serving 165K people where DG probably has around 37 stores. I don't have to go Walmart for a lot of things. Save time and gas. The model works. I just wish I could have bought DG Stock 30 years ago.

I'm not sure what 30 years looks like, but the last few have been a beating for DG. I only went to look bc like you, I would've guessed their stock price was great.

120 now I wonder where it was 30 years ago. I am guessing even with the drop you would have made some money. My wife inherited 250K six years ago. She asked me what she should do to invest it. I did not want to tell her because if it went south, I would feel guilty. I started to tell her to buy silver. I wish I had now. It would Probably be worth three times that. It has been in CD's earning 3% to 6%. I now feel guilty for not telling her. To her credit she has not spent it.

I've bought over 100 bags of mulch this year and all from W/M. I had to load every single one of them. I don't see how they keep people from getting more than they've paid for.
