OT: Verizon DSL or Xfinity internet service?

I currently have DSL since FIOS isn't available by me but with all the phones, smart TVs and working from home, lately I am not too happy with the speed of Verizon. Lately I am constantly losing my connection to my workspace.

Does anyone use Xfinity and are you happy with the speeds and what are you using it for in your home? I don't understand their pricing tiers as it seems the faster options cost less?

I have Directv. I tried comcast/xfinity but didn't like it. I'm only interested in changing up my internet service, I actually like Directv.

Wow...DSL. So you have a land line for telephone. If u look at Comcast/Xfinity, try also pricing up a double play package with phone and internet, and see if maybe you can get a better deal that way.

so you are saying DSL is antiquated? I called the comcast guy and he laughed when I told him I have DSL, but I didn't know if that was just a sales gimmick.

We run DSL at our vacation home in rural Arizona. We watch ESPN on the FireTV stick, and the quality is very good to excellent most of the time. The options to move to higher speed internet are limited and very expensive, and we are fine with the DSL service out there.

I have DSL and have had the same issues as you. I called Verizon and they were able to double my speed and cut the cost by about 40%. So I am currently paying about 1/4 what Xfinity internet would cost (after the promo period ends).

I also had the problem of DSL cutting out, but after some changes to the line and replacing my modem (switched from D-link to Actiontec), the service has been stable.

While the DSL speed is good enough for me, it is not as fast as my neighbor's Xfinity cable. For me, I'm good with DSL due to the much lower cost.

I have Xfinity X1 and I really like it. Comcast is a bit of a nightmare to deal with, but having said that if you can stand the pain, the product is really good

I just checked AT&T U-Verse to see what is available in my area. The website says that I can get up to 5mb/s download. I immediately tested my speed (I have Charter cable) and tested my current speed. My download was just measured at 53mb/s. Upload speed was 5.8, or almost 20% more than the maximum download speed of AT&T.

So, yes, it's antiquated.

DSL to cable internet comparison is like flip phone to iPhone 7. You can get by with a flip and text messaging but are very limited.

Yes Newell.. DSL is very old news. You have been screwed by Verizon not rolling out fiber to your neighborhood to make some real competition for Comcast. Its the way things are done in New Jersey. They gave Verizon a sweetheart deal to roll out fiber throughout the state.

The Verzion lawyers worked in some nice definitions as to what would constitute completion of the contract on their end.. they took care of some politicians neighborhoods and focused where they would make the most money for the lowest cost roll-outs. Then decided they make more money on cell coverage and put their money there.

So you are now stuck between barely maintained copper wire internet (DSL) or broadband over coax through the cable company which OWNS your municipality with ZERO competition. And if your town council or your home owner association decided they would roll out their own community broadband/fiber... well.. they are not allowed to. You gotta love New Jersey.

Xfinity is your only choice... Or, perhaps, unlimited 4G LTE through your mobile.. use a hotspot. But most mobile "unlimited" plans will throttle you over a certain point. So if you are talking about netflix and so on.. fuhgeddabowdit.

had the Direct TV/Comcast for Inet combo and VERY happy with performance. What I wasn't happy with was the cost increases. Dumped the $135/month DT for Direct now and enjoy it for $20/month (shared with son) and I am looking for inet closer to $50 (vs. $75).

I can get closer with Comcast but have to play the disconnect/reconnect game.

Yep, they stopped pulling fiber, so up by us were SOL.

My Dad is 80 years old. He uses the computer for email and basic Google search. He grew tired of DSL and the intermittent service. He just changed to Comcast and even with the limited amount he uses the internet for, he said the difference in the speed is night and day just to the naked eye (he did not run a speed test).

Sounds like his "basic google search" includes streaming video from youtube or similar.. er.. "hubs". HTML was created for formatted text.. if every page was what was on the internet 20 years ago DSL would be fine.. even dial-up modems. But today, most web pages are designed for content, not to limit bandwidth use.

Google search results does favor those sites whose landing pages come up FAST and punishes sites for a variety of offences including non-optimized images and so on. But still.. even simple google searches for largely textual information returns orders of magnitude more data than old DSL tech was designed for. And as has been mentioned.. maintenance on the old copper twisted pair infrastructure is severely lacking. Verizon and other carriers have often sold off "ownership" of the copper because of that. Last May, Verizon came to a settlement in a suit brought by many South Jersey towns regarding failure to maintain copper lines.

This is good advice. In an effort to lower the cable bill, I recently dropped down a few notches to a lower level package of TV, internet and voice (which I really don't need but worked out to be a better deal). In doing so, I went from 200mbs to 100mbs and, like beaced, I didn't notice the difference (although I did buy my own new modem to avoid the monthly fee, which also helped). If it was just me and my wife, I'd say 50mbs would probably suffice for the amount of web browsing and streaming we do but the kids are often gaming and streaming as well so I'm sticking with 100mbs.
