I don't know if you knew this but the whole federal government was off today. USPS had no say in the matter.

OK thanks.....So I just went to kind of pissed (after seeing an empty mailbox) about wasted money to losing my freaking mind!!!

90% of those people don’t give two-***** about adead ex-president. .....and even if they do (like me) it’s not like taking a paid day off is f’n anything close to reasonable.

I mean, I agree the entire government shutting down is a bit much just because an ex-one term president died.

Also, the only reason you hear USPS "loses billions" is nothing but Bush Jr.-era fvckery. They required that USPS fund pensions a ridiculous 30 years ahead of time - before even some USPS employees are even born! No other agency has to deal with pension funding like that. This rule was made in an attempt to privatize it. The reality is, USPS is one of the highest rated government agencies and if not for that dumb rule, it'd be profitable multiple times over.

Hey O, a good percentage still had to work today. The retail side was closed but the sorting of parcels didn’t stop. Plus, many places had carriers delivering as well. Just an FYI :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye::eek:kay:

Is this a government tradition where they get a day off when a past president dies?

Whatever.....Just even more proof that the government shouldnt compete with the private sector in a business endeavor. In a single day how much did FedEx and UPS stomp the USPS ? .....And Trump bitches about the deal Amazon gets from the United States Postal Service and not a whisper when most of the government shuts down willynilly.....

I guess employees would be way too upset to be productive.

Well I was expecting letters from people that really like me and was completely shocked when my mailbox was empty.

....just odd.

Man, it costs you 50 cents to mail a letter from WV to California and they get it there in a matter of days. Lighten up.

Yes..I know the mandatory retirement thingy....I get it... ...but still lose (take taxpayer ) money. The government shouldn’t be giving random days off to so many employees at the expense of taxpayers that really are not represented in that decision. ....Plus we’re too busy working to really make it an issue.

Except I just told you how they're not actually losing money.

Thought I included that in the same reply. You told me that before and I took note.

The United States Postal Service cost taxpayers money each and every year whether it’s the fault of the employees or the system (mandatory money toward retirement BS) and you cannot deny that....

I mean I agree that pension fiasco needs to be corrected but there's a reason they have a reputation at delivering in "rain, hail, sleet or snow." They're good at what they do and cheaper than UPS.

Federal employees pay state and local taxes also..just sayin..unless you work overseas in a hazardous area/war zone/fed tax exempt deal.

I’m gonna laugh when the USPS shuts down and all you clowns in rural WV have to pay fed ex or ups much more in shipping costs if they even deliver out there at all

Dude.... ....where I live (and it’s not all that rural) the USPS does NOT deliver during anything close to a major snow storm. Lack of footprints in the snow is my proof.

I feel like you take this personally most likely because you have some kind of association with USPS.....And while they may have great employees there’s no longer any reason that the government should be involved with a free market business that has plenty of competition. .....costing taxpayers HUGE amounts of money (even if it’s for retirement plans beyond the control of the USPS).

On this day they’re paying taxes using my money for an extra day off....

...lol.... ...they pay taxes.... ....with my money while not working. Today’s production could’ve been dedicated to their mandatory retirement plan.

Edit: Blows my mind that you think them paying taxes adds any value to this discussion.

Duh, every agency loses money. At least USPS produces substantial revenue. By the way, USPS operating expenses (you know, the work done to receive and send your mail) isn'tt funded by tax dollars so you're not paying them to sit at home today.

Rhetorical question, would you be happy if the USPS was making a profit?

Lastly, I'm sorry you walked all the way to the mailbox only to discover the latest copy of Victoria's Secret catalog wasn't waiting for you. The Blue Lot is disappointed too as we've been anxiously waiting for you to post updated pics.

I had an aunt & uncle work for USPS until they retired & now they're on their pensions, which is how I heard about the pension mess in the first place.

But you keep repeating this thing about it "losing billions" when it has no basis in reality. It's an accounting quirk made by a party hellbent on privatizing an overall very popular agency. Privatizing it will undoubtedly lead to higher prices for shipping - look at the prices for UPS or DHL and compare it to USPS and the postal service will almost always be a cheaper option.

So yeah, I wanna keep USPS as-is and I don't see the utility in bashing it for closing down because some old aristocrat died when it wasn't their choice to close today anyway

You could have joined the federal service if you wished and got all the nice benefits. Why hate.

Who’s paying for their retirement plan ? ....And if they’re so profitable couldn’t they have taken today’s HUGE profit margin (that was lost just because...you know...an easy day off)) and dedicated it toward their retirement BS and saved us (taxpayers) money ? I know...crazy.

It’s truly welfare for people who show up at work.....Unless the boss says take a day off randomly because we’ll still pay you.

Compare the cost of a the USPS to how much the pentagon wastes. I firmly believe in the USA being a hedgemonic global military power, but the DofD wastes more than anyone.

Not everything should be privatized, the USPS definitely falls in that category, who cares if they don’t turn a profit?

. Undeserved warfare hmmm. I’m not going to argue with you because you have your mind made up on the value of federal employees I am sure.

That’s not really true because I believe that federal employees paid by taxpayers is an absolute necessity.

The (traditional) mail service (USPS...and I’m not trashing the employees) not so much.

The other poster answered the questions about the pension funding but, you seem not to want to listen to it. I clarified that your tax $ isn't used to fund the USPS to deliver mail. They're 2 different funds and funding sources. You can't (at least easily and without legislation of some sort) move the $ from one pot to another. Your argument literally makes no sense when you're ignoring all the facts given to you but, carry on.

If the United States Postal Service didn’t exist would the taxpayers have to pay for that second fund (seemingly forever...currently no end in sight)?

I didn’t ignore ****. I’ve made it very clear about that secondary fund but you seem to think it’s completely unattached to United States Postal Service.

The funny part is people in this thread actually wrote there is no lost money because we gave a large portion of United States Postal Service the day off for really no reasonable reason. If their production is so wonderful then how is that possible to just randomly give people a day off and think profitability stays exactly the same?

It’s essentially a welfare day. ....I’ll leave it to you to explain explain how welfare is profitable income for the taxpayers.
