Waaaaaaaaay better than Snooki.
Kermit has imparted wisdom on many generations of children and stood up to Miss Piggy on occasion. There are worse choices.
The story says that Jim Henson, Kermit's creator, was a U of Maryland alum, so the choice actually makes some sense.

Well, she wasn't commencement speaker, but she did speak at Rutgers for a hefty fee
So it was an entertainment appearance similar to having a comedian appear or a band perform.

The Rutgers University Programming Association (RUPA) is comprised of students who plan more than 140 programs and events throughout the academic year. The Comedy & Movies committee invited Snooki and comedian Adam Ace based on input from students. No state funds, tuition money, or donor contributions are used for these events. The students use funds designated for student programming, just like other concerts and events they want on campus.

Too bad the OG Kermie is long gone. Seems a bit like a political statement of defiance as well…given what’s going on.
It’s honestly probably a better choice than half the local politicians many schools typically get for these types of things.
At least no one should be walking out which had been the new cool thing to do
