In 15 days, on the 15th, I am leaving out of Dauphin Island going tuna fishing for three days.

I have that Monday, the 12th off.

So I am looking for some ideas for a mini trip from say the 12th through the morning of the 15th. Here is the catch. I am over New Orleans. Been there many many times. It's a great place and all, but just not interested.

I have ZERO desire to ever gamble again. Long story. So that pretty much cuts out Biloxi/Gulfport.

65ish degree nights on the coast next week will probably turn the water too cold for getting in the water.

I would like to wake up the morning of the 15th within at most three hours of Dauphin Island, we leave at noon.

Any ideas?

What’s going on in October on the Coast of Alabama and into Pensacola area?
Is it Fall Break for schools?
Lots of hotels on the beach are booked solid or expensive as hell

So everything is ruled out west of DI. You are from Mobile so I can’t tell you anything you don’t know there. So that leaves Fla Panhandle. I’d suggest 30A. Find a VRBO, you can get them for less than 5 night minimums. Rent a bike. Hit up some goo restaurants, a nice beach, and 47 dollar ice cream.

It could be the best kept secret of the coast is getting out. The beach up to November is fantastic.

I can get a room down there no problem. But what to do when the water is cold?

Fall Break isn't a thing this year.

The water might not be that cold. I was in it yesterday evening and we are supposed to be in the 80’s all next week.

I am actually from Montgomery. I grew up with dad living on Escambia Bay. If I could pick, I would die like Oden did in the movie, on a bench overlooking Mobile Bay. Beach water is turning cool. It would be a good time to go down toward 30A for fishing. But who wants to go fishing for three days before going fishing for three days? I would be about fished out. Then I would also have to leave fish in a cooler for three days inside my truck while the highs are still over 80. Plus leaving my truck with everything just a pane of glass away from a thief, not a happy thought.

The beach is pretty fantastic in October. Swimming is hit or miss depending on temperature, but the area isn’t crowded, it won’t be too cold to drink on the beach and enjoy the weather, and if you have any places you like to eat, you can enjoy then without ridiculous crowds.

The problem you’ll have is how Far East do you have to get to avoid sally stuff?

I’d at least consider the Mississippi gulf coast. Will be an easy drive and if it’s too cold to swim anyway, beaches are plenty nice. And you’ll have better food options than Destin.

Probably don’t want to do it right before you go on a three night tuna trip, but One ore two night trips to the islands, whether staying at one of the camps on cat or staying on a boat at chandelier are pretty nice.

Are all the hotels open back up after Sally? Are workers staying in hotels while doing cleanup?

If you are into hunting, clay shooting or oddly enough Paint Ball, try Taylor Creek Hunting Club. It is next to Bellingrath Cardens which may be only a 30 minute drive from the island. They offer guided hunts, clay shooting and periodically great Pheasant shoots. Make sure you have good directions because the road into the place is easy to miss. They are nice folks.

I just booked in Gulf Shores for cheap for October 10th-17th. Last night, the Brett/Robinson website (https://www.brett-robinson.com/) said which buildings were open. I can't find that info on the website anymore, but if you are interested in that area I would give them a call. They own all the Phoenix buildings (and others), which aren't our typical, but the hurricane cancelled our Perdido reservation.

You're from this area, and you're asking us about stuff to do? Normally, we'd be asking you. Maybe Desoto, Blackwater or Conecuh NF has some hiking trails? Watch out for snakes, especially in October. I'd say Destin but with COVID anything that you don't already know about has been cancelled.

Mobile Bay- what to do?

- no gambling
- no new orleans
- no swimming in the ocean
- no golfing
- no hunting
- no shooting
- no extra fishing

Mutumbo didnt even reject this much.

Go hike for a day and kayak for a day or two. Thatll tire you out and you can then sit on a boat for 3 days fishing and recover.
