It’s awkward to check the bag, but you have to check the bag. It’s like Leo said in lethal weapon, they f••• you in the drive-through.We've usually done 10% as well, alot of the time and usually get takeout once a month. I swear only 2x this year, did they even get the order correct. Wrong topping or forgot a side. I open the trunk and go through it now, befyI head home.
I'm bout ready get off the tipping trainunless it's sit down.
If I am out in public and a GenZ can carry on a conversation, I am blown away impressed. It is so rare.
The best place I had for takeout was Montgomery INN Ribs in Cincinnati. I went with my cousin they opened every box and went over it according to the ticket.
I tip. All the time. Usually in cash. We can afford it and we need those people....but to each their own. I understand it gets old...I don't know what the answer is cause if the biz did pay their peoole more are we all going to pay for that in higher prices? IDK...I just don't worry about it. That's just me. YMMV.

Point of the OP was to point out that tips are expected everywhere now.
Some might think me a dick for this point of view but no one pays me extra to do the job that I am paid for…

Companies are still paying the same, they're just trying to find additional ways for their employees to get paid.
I think more industries (mechanics, convenient stores, grocery stores, realtors, lawn care outfits, DMV, etc) should do it quite honestly. It's just an ask and people are dumb enough to pay, so why not have that option?
I’ve said this every time someone says nobody wants to work. It’s BS. The problem is the compensation isn’t worth the work. You can say $20/hr is decent money (it’s really not, a lot of customer service jobs pay in that general range), but anyone who has worked customer service will tell you getting absolutely annihilated by pissed off people on the phone all day is a whole different animal of work. If the price was right, people would line up down the street to do the work. Do you think only 1 person would have shown up is the pay was $30 an hour? $40 an hour the company would have been bombarded by applicants. It’s not they don’t want to work, it just needs to be worth their while.
They earn their tips.
And even more of a reason not to tip others. I was ordering a sandwich at the Denver Airport and it was difficult to back out the keypad to not leave a tip
It dawned on me how even a 10% tip from a customer that takes only a minute to process could disrupt the industry. Why would anyone work in a resteraunt serving a limited number of tables when they could just ring you up at the register and make more becsude of the volume coming through.
I think it would make zero difference to the number of people eating out since the vast majority pay for tipping any way.
And we assume the tips are all going to the employee. Nope. A lot of owners are siphoning off. Better tip cash if you like the manner in which a $3 bottle of water was rung up.
And the tips are often "pooled" to be split up among the help. That really removes the individual incentive part of the equation when everyone just gets a share of the total collected. So when you tip you're not rewarding an individual for good service, you're contributing to a collective pool.
So let them get angry. Do you think guaranteeing them $30/hour would make them be better servers? My experience locally anyway is that servers do their best. I’ve maybe had one over the past several years who wasn’t on the ball and she was tipped accordingly. Eventually they’ll either figure it out or seek a different job. Tipping is a great capitalistic idea. If you don’t like it, go to the drive thru.
I agree, I can count on one hand all the times I had "bad servers" and usually it was crazy circumstances like the place was totally packed or they were short staffed.

I still don't know why it's that different from other jobs like say a pharmacist, a retail store clerk, a teacher, a government clerk, etc. Just pay them a fair wage to begin with which is part of the cost used to develop pricing. And if they don't do a decent job, they should be fired.
Other than being timely and pleasant (which should always be part of the job), what really constitutes something that earns a superb above average tip anyway? And how often do you experience that superb above average experience (whatever it is)?
Taking pride in your job and doing the best job you can is nonexistent nowadays. Work hard. Work OT. Work your way up to a better job or position. Stop crying about low pay and improve yourself in whatever you do. Get a job with good benefits and a matching 401K. Start young. Bust your ***. Retire at 50. The jobs and opportunities are out there. But you may need to actually to do some work.

All they are doing is bringing out food, they arent cooking just bringing out the food to the table.
They should barely get paid anything if thats the case. Tips allow them to.make more money than they should.
And yet about 5% of them struggle with the basic job requirements. I reward people who I think are doing a good job and I try to tip in cash even if I pay for the meal with a card
. BTW I ALWAYS pay my plumber and lawn sprinkler guy in cash and more than they ask for. In return they always answer their phone.I tip a lot and never think twice about it

I know, nothing like getting home and your food isn't there. You double check the receipt and realize you did pay for it. You hate parking off to the side to check the bag, then the drive thru is 25 deep. So you walk in and their's no one at the counter.
Oh my god, THERE IS NEVER ANYONE AT THE COUNTER! if you go one because your order is messed up, there is a better chance that a dude with a gun has taken all the workers in the back and tied them up. There will not be anyone at that counter.
I had an acquaintance who was a sales manager for an area radio station. When he was young he used to wait on us often. I hadn’t seen him for years and then I ran into him and he was still waiting tables. I said “Ray why are you still waiting tables?”. He replied “Because I have 6 kids and I make more in tips than I do at my day job.”. Great guy. Great server. That place closed about 10 years ago though and I haven’t seen him since. Normally the people waiting tables in midlife do it because they really need the money. The Retired HR person I referenced earlier waits tables because she knows a restaurant owner who needs help and has trouble finding reliable wait staff.
