Why do people wait 10-15 minutes to fill up at Costco to save 2 cents a gallon vs other, faster, stations nearby?

I've almost always needed to get premium gas (92-93 octane) for my vehicles based on engine tune and/or modifications, and in Monmouth County NJ at least, the savings on that have definitely (and sometimes significantly) been more than 2 cents per gallon between Costco and other spots. Assuming 15 gallon fill-ups at Costco averaging twice a week for 4 years at a savings of $0.10 per gallon compared to other places, that amounts to $450.

Nowadays, I'll try to time fill ups at Costco on weekends, early in the morning or in the evening before the station closes, to avoid the crowds. It was more difficult to do so when driving to work daily and rushing to RU for grad school right afterward most evenings.

Try these tips:

Landscaper or Gas Attendant - "Try to stay out of the hot sun"

Chinese pick-up- "if you clean these tables up, someone might actually eat in"

Pizza joint pick-up- "you should really bring a second white t-shirt to work "

Dunkin Donuts cashier - "send your resume to a job that you don't have to show up at 3AM".

Or the old standby, "Don't eat yellow snow."

Hey, the ScarletNation can wipe their rear ends with Benjis - that's their business, not mine. But considering 4 of 5 ScarletNation members donate nothing to the B1G fund, I'm just pleasantly surprised that we are generous tippers. This is a good thing, right Plum?

Two things:

1. Overtipping is part of culture in NJ especially.

2. Many people give a great deal to Rutgers, but not to the B1G Build Fund. In fact, most of your larger donors are already getting tapped out by their specific sport(s), and max out what they can give to various sport specific initiatives. The school encourages this as well, by the way in which they provide access tied to donations. Hence, the general funds are somewhat of an after thought. In fact, if you assume that most of Scarlet Nation are in fact bigger donors, it would follow that most of that money doesn't go toward the Build Fund.

I think you also used to be in snow plow business and was wondering if around Christmas time if any of the mom pop shops you plowed their driveway for customer parking and could be considered your regular customers ever gave you extra at Christmas time.?
Landscapers in cold country don't usally work at that job ( that I know of), so a Christmas (bonus) tip would be more out of the ordinary than as you say your landscape customers do, except for one.

tipping for snow plowing...good luck with the cheapies in Montgomery/Hillsborough

Tips for take out? Is that something new?

Delivery , yes of course! Waiters? Yes of course? Me picking up the food? Nah.
Honestly, I don't know what all the conventions/standards are for every situation. I just do what I think is right at the moment in my head.

Old days I knew 15% tip and 20% for good service at a sit down restaurant other stuff I didn't know and still really don't.

Now I usually end up tipping 20% with the tax included most of the time at regular sit down meals, 10% at buffets, 2-3 bucks at a fast food like a Bobby's Burgers and few bucks up to 5 for takeout I pick up other than pizza which I don't tip. Rarely if ever do delivery. Are the percentages or standards I use the norm or not, I have no clue it's just what I do. If you do more fine, if you do less fine I mean who comes up with all these standards or changing standards anyway.

Been in and out on the thread. Have we discussed hotel maid tipping yet? I'm a generous tipper all around, but when I travel for work, I put that "do not disturb" sign on the door as soon as I get there and don't leave any money behind when I check out. I figure turning over the room from one guest to another is what they're paid to do. If I need towels or something while I'm there, I'll call down to the front desk and tip whoever brings them up.

Different story when on vacation with the wife and kid. Tip a $3-$5 a day there.

That pretty much sums up what I typically do.

I worked for a moving company in college during the Summers. The amount of people that did not provide a tip were far and few in between.

I worked as a moving man for part of one summer. Because I was inexperienced, they assigned me to big jobs where a more senior guy was in charge and we often had 4 guys or even more. I can’t say for sure, but many of us younger guys thought that the senior guy would receive the tip from the customer, but then keep it all himself.

I had the same suspicion. The first summer I was on a team of 4 or 5 and we did all the ***** work. Tips were plenty. The next summer I worked with one guy and we would take care of small jobs, and speciality stuff. No tips. At first I was like probably just small jobs is what it is and would just head to the truck. Then I was like ya know what I'm gonna start going with him to have the customer sign. Sure as ****, everyone started tipping.

One of the reasons that I usually hand the senior guy the tip in front of some of the other guys.
