You're being supercilious at best
Almost everything is falling apart.
We pulled out of A'stan without even telling allied forces that we asked to be there
A week later CCP (who owns DC) is visiting Bagram and UK Parliament is condemning US leaders
Then we go over and stoke Eastern Europe while while domestically we cant even move goods while the transportation guy is on maternity leave.
US makes Venezuela look smart

Yes . Briefly as a youngster and not my cup of tea.
Tipping waited tables, a delivery person sure . They are providing you a service . But someone just ringing you up the register ? I don’t think they need to be tipped. But bagging groceries in the supermarket , I tip if they have a can out. .

On another note, we have all heard stories from our service worker friends on the demographics of people that do or don’t tip . It is quite interesting to say the least .

A couple of years ago we were having drinks in the theater district . The group next to us were tourists from Belgium and when they got their tab I heard them say the gratuity was added on . When I got my bill, I didn’t see a tip added on so I asked the bartender and she said “we do that for all the tourists, but I can tell you’re from around here.”

See, the delivery person is one I utimately don't get. They're getting paid a salary and many times you're paying a delivery fee ...or buying expensive product that offers free delivery. So why am I tipping the delivery guy on top of That? I don't tip (or usually even see) UPS, who is here every few days.

If they go above and beyond in lugging something to a specific part of the house, or with assembly and placement, okay. But if they're just dropping something on the porch or in the entryway ..nah.

Living costs are out-of-control in a lot of places
My old hometown used to be affordable for young people getting started
Now a 1 bedroom apt in a sketch neighborhood with poor schools and no parking is $2100
A 1350 sq ft house with no property is 460k
The schools are 3/4 "immigrants" and the parents took a lot of jobs and lived in a house with 12-15 people sharing rent. A working family on the books can't easily afford what 15 off-the-books guys with leaf-blowers can
The financial firms are also running the market bubbles and are buying the homes and driving prices up.
Those who have get more and those who dont need tips.
A lot of bommers threw their "Greatest Generation" parents under the bus, and then they wrecked their kids with toxic colleges, job exports/worker imports and tax-payer backed economic bubbles.
Now we've gone from yuppies to hipsters to tipsters. Now kids don't know if they are boys or girls and they have fishooks in their lips under their black Antifa masks. After the tip phase, they might be outside your house next like Venezuela
ok boomer

What gets me is the 4% credit card fee. If a restaurant makes me pay 4% then that comes out of the tip. 16% to the server- 4% to the credit card company. Sorry but it is what it is.

Same people who complain that the alumni won't give to Rutgers are complaining about tipping.
Just don't leave one if you want to be cheap.

What do you normally tip on a haircut? Cost is $25-$30 for about 20 mins. I usually leave $5-$7 but is that too low?

Not all the boomers - more the mainstreamed boomer crowd who thought their parents were all Archie Bunker neanderthals and they were the peace/love savior generation. Collectively they "generously" made enemies into friends and citizens have to be censored to protect them. No amendment is more important that the first and its 100% under threat from the eggheads that the boomer college faculties turned out. I was there to see it come on. US colleges are toxic with the most crazy ideas. Sentient insects at Rutgers lol?
Why is it that the right wing circle jerkers turn 75% of OT threads political.

Move it to the CE board.

Do you tip the owner if they’re the one cutting your hair?

Have heard you don’t tip them, since they are already getting a piece of the other chairs.

All of my HS and College jobs.

The cashiers ringing up your order and the person making the sandwich are getting paid standard minimum wage, which is currently $13/hr in NJ.
agreed. you don't have to tip them. i think people are equating what shows up on the payment screen or on the receipt as an expectation of a tip. i don't think it is. what i was trying to convey in my other point is, the POS system is set up to work for any and all restaurants/food service, unless customized. Customizing software is expensive and has maintenance considerations and costs, so i'm sure many establishments don't customize. So if you have a standard POS, they're going to have the tipping screen/mechanism built in, and the receipts that it creates are all going to be standard in including those fields. just because it's there doesn't mean they expect a takeout customer to be tipping. for the record, i do tip for takeout at my favorite mom and pop shops. others...no.

in terms of how waitstaff/bartenders/busboys get paid...that's a separate discussion.

yeah that's a tough onr. I went to Ray's Clipjoint in Morris Plains for a while and the owner was the sole cutter. He charged $18 but I only gave him $20.

Let me correct some of this bovine excrement. Mainstreamed boomers did not all think their parents "were all Archie Bunker neanderthals". Was there some friction? Sure. Just like EVERY OTHER GENERATION and their parents. And the tilt on college faculties is on a continuum rather than a sudden change. And during this "cancel craze" the faculties are predominantly Gen-X and Millenials. Many of the boomer professors have retired.

What "it" do you mean?

The economy is being nuked, borders erased, 1000s of unscreened strangers flown (by gov,) around the country at night, Intel agency committee head had CCP spy/hooker staff his office and he still has a job no problemo - because half of DC is on the take (CCP says). Babies have to get a treatment for a disease they don't get but 80k people can die a year from CCP fentanyl intentionally aimed at middle class kids. The US techs who helped CCP censor its people not push the same things at home.

The "it" you think of is gasping and turning blue

Don't think so. All the colleges are indoctriantion camps who preach "science" while telling kids they have to decide if they are what their genes say they are. Cats are dogs, dogs are birds, birds are fish etc. Only people who don't know history think "every generation" is as mutated as this one. Colleges tilt the same way Hollywood does, and that's the same as most news media, corporations and now even military (last bastion of functionality). The reason these things happen is because Mr and Mrs (outdated I know) America went to sleep while provocateurs poisoned wells. Boomers were taught they had to be "special" and many want to be rock stars and will sellout for a check, an honor etc etc. "Science" in US is a mess - 1 in 7 people is on meds (25% of woman over 40) and that and all the rest would horrify past generations. A super medicated population is in most dystopian tales.

Move to Europe, tipping is usually whatever change you get back if at all. That is because restaurant workers get paid real wages.

When you have $2.13 and hour min wage for waiters etc you end up with tips becoming a big issue.

I do agree with when you do all the work and a machine asks for a tip is over the top.

In many parts of Europe, tipping has mostly disappeared. If you pay by credit card, there is no way to add a tip to your bill, and since there is no change with a credit card, no tip to leave on the table. In Europe, as in America, most people pay for their restaurant bills by credit card, but instead of taking your credit card away, they bring a small machine to your table and you swipe or tap right there. There are no options on the machines to add tip and you are never asked. This is based on my observations in Netherlands and France, other places could be different.

In bars people still often pay with cash, but tipping is still very unusual and just leaving some extra change.

Service industry workers are hurting and restaurants/bars are hurting for employees.
It's easy for people sitting behind a screen and on the phone all day safe from exposure to others to complain about such things.
To the point above, from the Gary Brackett article posted in this thread:

"Former Colts linebacker Gary Brackett is putting his Super Bowl XLI ring, as well as his AFC Championship rings, up for auction.

Brackett, who played for the Colts from 2003-2011, formerly owned the Stacked Pickle restaurant. He filed for bankruptcy in September. The 41-year-old closed his Stacked Pickle locations in 2020 due to the pandemic. The bankruptcy filing estimated his assets at $2 million and his liabilities at nearly $5.8 million. The restaurant had nine Indiana locations and one in Ohio."

"Nickel and Diming" is out of control. Everything costs more, yes. But food service/eateries just need to follow a European model: pay a living wage to staff and include all overhead/cost in the transaction itself. This is not difficult to fix.

I increased it because that's what's getting a lot of people along these days
Restaurants in particular have a lot of college kids, mothers etc who need a flex schedule and cash etc
When all the restaurants get closed it flushes a lot of people - while the laptop and zoom call crowd have it nicer than before.

Tricky one. I had my hair done yesterday and two different stylist worked(one is the owner) on me. My total was 110 and I gave them 15 each. Not sure if that was right or wrong. Nail salon is another one…it’s always a pedicure girl and then the nail tech(owner) I have to tip both. It’s annoying, but I’m making the choice to go.

A lot of Boomer parents were hurt/confused by their kids
Alas they were too tired from the war to really get engaged with all that
I know Gen-X and millenials are off the hook - but they are Boomer kids. Boomer parents didn't want to be "uncool" and acted like friends with their kids. Let them have booze parties at home (safer) and let them leave the house dressed like hookers and inmates. Of course that's assuming the kids have/had parents. Now many people just have kids freestyle and shack them up with the people they are "dating"- na mean?.

Tips and a society circling the drain are hand in hand.
The big cities are battlegrounds with people being murdered en masse each week.
Even NYS wants to leave NYS
The dollar is being destroyed
The military has political officers" like USSR while transbenders are made into generals
Navy ships crash into boats they can see 2 hours away (now they hit ocean mountains too).
The leading cause of death now are fentanyl deaths because borders are gone and DC has ceded control to cartels.
Invasion of Normandy was 165k US troops - 13x that has come over the border unscreened and then flown around the country in a pandemic while the same people gear-up to inject babies with an mRNA cocktail destroying peoples immunity with each shot (and a hemorrhagic CV-19 version cooking over in Asia).
Heck the "stock market" is an oxymoron now because its more fixed than market.
Kids cant even buy cars now never mind pay for the gas
The smart people see the escalating dangerous but unfortunately that leaves out a lot of people with grad degrees running stuff into the ground.
Wal St and gov accomplices rip people off for billions but hey - gotta get to those people with tips jars

"The number of fentanyl deaths in the U.S. doubled from around 32,000 to 64,000 between April 2019 and April 2021. The drug has taken just shy of 80,000 people's lives between January 2020 and December 2021."

The way things are going a lot people here might be needing tips lol.

Adding trillions of dollars with a crazy idea that debt doesn't matter is a highway to Argentina
When they are saying they want to be able to monitor bank accounts of $600 or less, and hire 85,000 IRS agents don't believe its "for the rich." People not connected will be debt serfs.

Like I said earlier, we have people who think they are discovering new genius level ideas when its the same stuff that wrecked Venezuela. They want a new flag (there are now two flying at US consulates around the world) new constitution (they like S Africa's) confiscation and worse. Playing with fire imo.
