Yet, he wasn't the last man standing in the majors from the 1950s. That honor goes to pitcher Jim Kaat (1959-1983),

Gibson is a guy I wish I saw pitch, but I missed him. He sounds like a complete bad a$$ out there. My earliest memories of him were the Primatin asthma mist commercials he did.

Gibson's 1.12 ERA in 1968, combined with Denny McClain's 31 wins, and the dominance of pitchers in general, was the impetus behind MLB shrinking the strike zone and lowering the mound.
