OT: Those suing for extra eligibility

I was just wondering. These football players filing lawsuits to play their 6th, 7th, 8th years, or the basketball guy from Alabama...who pays the lawyers representing them? The players? Agents?

The schools that want the players pay the lawyers. Rutgers spent hundreds of thousands to get and keep Jett eligible for 6th year, I would estimate after reading the legal docs.

Yep. Schools are helping because getting one of these studs back makes or breaks their season.

However a lot of these guys have a couple million in the bank now. Most could afford their own lawyer.

Did Kaliakmanis try to get a 6th year? We have lots of lawyers here in Jersey…

If you’re a decent player but unlikely to make it to the NFL (which is most), why not milk a long college career? If you’re smart you can even go to class and get one of those little degrees these football programs offer as a side benefit and call yourself a “student” athlete. If you bank enough $ and don’t blow it on bimbos, clothes, cars and drugs before you’re 30, you can set yourself up pretty well! May as well milk the system before they change it yet again!!

From a self interest perspective, I totally get why a decent college talent would want to hold on as long as possible. Earning a few hundred thousand dollars a year in your early twenties vs a fraction of that in the real world is attractive. The problem is that it really hurts kids in high school who have one less slot on each college team available for them for each 6th year player that sticks around. They then go down a level and try to move up after a year perpetuating the aspects of the system that many of us have grown to dislike.
