Based on the positive responses and assistance from folks on this board like DJ Spanky, I decided to move forward with my Iron Maiden Trooper inspired Rutgers tailgating flag idea. Here's how it turned out:

Big thanks to the talented DirtyRU for turning this crazy idea in my head into a reality!!

As I said in the other thread...

I just don't see it. It's nice and and all that but it just doesn't say "Rutgers" to me. Sorry.

Nice artwork though.

fdny, I get your point... that "it just doesn't say Rutgers"... but I think you missed his point. If I had to guess, my belief is that the idea behind this was never for it to "say Rutgers". Nobody thinks seeing Eddie and Maiden art makes them think of Rutgers football. That doesn't make any sense. The idea was that he wanted to combine 2 passions of his (Maiden and Rutgers) and have that merging of passions represented artistically. And he wanted it to be represented on a flag during gameday tailgating.

What made even more sense was using The Trooper, since it's a battlescene with a flag, so it's essentially a flag within a flag. And to delve even further... although he may not have been thinking this, but there's the old idea of 2 teams doing "battle" on the playing field. So he's got that metaphor going.

To me, this represents perfectly what I believe he was trying to achieve. And when people see it flying out on the lots, if they are familiar with Maiden, their first thought will probably be "Cool Maiden flag!" Then they'll look closer and realize it's Maiden with a Rutgers twist. Even cooler!

So yeah, once again, it was never suppose to just "say Rutgers" and make people immediately think of Rutgers. Was never suppose to be that obvious. If it was, he would just fly a Rutgers flag, yeah? No, this is more interesting... and will make people look closer and / or take a double take.

Bada$$ IMHO.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

Nice job on the presentation. As usual. We have come to expect that from you. ;)

And yes it will cause people to look and I'm sure compliment because visually it is that good.

But again, even after the explanation don't see it other than to say, "hey, that's cool."

Maybe put a block R on both the sides of the skull? Or small one on the shoulder epaulets? LOL

Yup yup, if there's one thing I learned a LONG time ago in this industry, it's that art is very subjective. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

That said, thanks for the compliment. And sure, some block R swag on Eddie WOULD be cool, agreed, ha!

Lets do that for EVERY opponent like @PatrickRU92 used to do.

Some day the talent on the field/court/etc. will match what guys like @DirtyRU do for us off of it.

And when that happens (and it will) we're going to quote what the dude said to bad guy James Spader's character (who represents our opponents on and off the field) in "Some Kind of Wonderful"..."You're over."

This thread and that image made my day. Basically my 2 biggest passions.

@LeonardLeap23 please send a heads up when you raise the flag. I'd love to see it and will bring a few red and blacks / troopers for you.

All ITT get a like.

Up the Irons! Go RU!
Thanks @mdh2003. I'll gladly share a Trooper beer or 2 with you at the next tailgate. Hopefully I'll be back in the Blue Lot flying "Old Eddie" up high.

Up the RU Irons!

Thanks Dirty for clearly and concisely explaining my thought process behind this idea. My simplistic engineering mind could not have done so. It would have been something more like this:
Question: What things do I love?
Answer: (RU Football + tailgating) x (Cool Maiden artwork) = (Awesome Flag)^2

@mdh2003 @LeonardLeap23 , just a bit of trivia, saw you both used a variant of "up the Irons" in your posts. Along with its association with Maiden, it is also a phrase often used by supporters of West Ham United (such as myself-see my avatar). Steve Harris is a huge fan and his primary bass has the West Ham crest on it.

You'll take my life but I'll take yours too
You'll fire your musket but I'll run you through
So when you're waiting for the next attack
You'd better stand there's no turning back...

I am getting goose bumps imaging this playing before a game. Well done @DirtyRU and @LeonardLeap23 !

I would lose it if we ever, FINALLY adopted music that would genuinely pump up the crowd to witness a violent sport.

I have dozens of ideas on this. None of them include EDM.

Yes. I believe Harris also trained briefly with the club.

For those that don't know, The Trooper is about the Charge of the Light Brigade. With the famous Maiden gallop (also heard on Run To The Hills), lines about acrid smoke and horses breath, as well as the mournful wail of a chorus, you really feel like you are in the thick of Balaclava. In short, it's classic Maiden. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's worth a listen.
