Good Texas country with some good guitar playing...
James McMurtry and The Heartless Bastards - Live in Aught Tree - Choctaw Bingo. (His father, Larry, wrote Lonesome Dove)

Ray Wylie Hubbard - conversation with the devil is my favorite song.

Jerry Jeff Walker Pandora station is great, as is Mumford or the Black Crowes

I get lots of my music from Pandora.

I retract my earlier post of not listening to bands most people haven't heard. I do like Seasick Steve. Good stuff

One of Lucero's (or maybe Calexico's?) old guitarists is with The Hold Steady now. Great band to catch live if you like good old fashioned bar bands. They're not exactly "obscure" (but neither are a bunch of the bands in the thread so far).
I'll also plug a sort of modern-rock band I used to watch back in their dive bar days: Cage the Elephant.

And hooray for Spotify. Tracking down new music would be an all day ordeal back in the good old days.

Vampire Weekend, Alt-J, The National...

No offense to your musical tastes, but it was messing up the board viewing. Feel free to just link the videos.

Around the house I listen to a lot of new music because I have 2 teenage daughters. I have no idea wh sings these songs (feeling like my dad). However some of the stuff is not bad. Wife and I commented the other night that we don't seem to complain like our parents did about the music we listened to when we were young.
Pandora on the other hand is Zeplin to Waylon. Driving&crying to Sturgill Simpson (thanks to hatfieldms)

I agree about Echo; they are incredibly underrated. Also another band I didn't mention, which I should have, is Marcy Playground. They are considered a "1 hit wonder" with their hit "Sex and Candy", but that ENTIRE album was 17'n amazing. Every single song.

I'm glad you listened to Elliott Smith, too. In my opinion, he's one of the greatest song writers of all time, right behind John Lennon in my book. Definitely in my all time top 3 artists/groups.

Have you seen The National yet? I saw them a few years ago and they played to like 40 people. They have completely blown up. Future Islands is another great band that is getting huge. Townes Van Zandt is probably my favroite song writer. I lucked out and got all of his LPs on the original pressing of cassettes. The lyrics to like a summer Thursday are something special that doesn't happen too often

With an edge...

Gentlemen:

If you are like me and you like your music to rock hard while maintaining its accessibility, may I offer the following suggestions:

Witchcraft- Legend
Best Rock and Roll I've heard in a LONG time. Favorite release of 2012
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJN0fP-uCt8&list=PL0wHPsrcROMqf23Ra2LVR210mxfc2a8zP&index=3

Kamchatka- The Search Goes On
Same as aforementioned. Just good straight up rock and roll. So far, my favorite release of 2014

Cody Chesnutt- Landing On A Hundred
Got Soul? I can't believe nobody's mentioned this guy. Maybe he was mentioned and I missed it.

And since we've moved on to soul:
Charles Bradley- Victim of Love
Watch the movie Soul of America on Netflix. It will tell you all you need to know about this guy. He does an amazing cover of Changes by Black Sabbath as well. Almost everything the Daptone label puts out is top notch.

The Strypes
Brit kids showing how Rock and Roll is really done.

Well... That's my contribution. Enjoy.
