OT: The Last Jedi

You'll probably hate me but I liked Luke in this movie. To me the Jedi are just as flawed as the Sith so Luke sort of came to realize this. I know it upsets people but when you look at the history of the Jedi and Sith it's just a power grab.

There were plenty of other things in this movie that were a **** show. The whole Finn/Rose storyline was a waste of time and a joke and ended up being totally pointless if Poe had been told the plan in the first place! They could have devoted that film time to revealing more about Snoke or something else. The movie is Mad Max/Road Warrior in space.

Just playing devil’s advocate on the Snoke thing here for a second, but what backstory did they give the Emperor prior to the prequels? He is briefly mentioned in A New Hope, has the one hologram in Empire, and then pretty much suffers the same fate as Snoke in ROTJ.
Without the prequels you don’t know much about Palpatine either. I too would’ve liked maybe one or two more lines about how Snoke was connected to Ben Solo, but whose to say we don’t get that in Episode 9?
If you’re mad about Luke being a lonely hermit, don’t blame Johnson for that. JJ totally set that up in TFA. I thought the way Johnson wrote Luke in this movie was perfect and a very realistic progression for that character.
No one is mad luke died. We are mad because they sent him out like a *****. A hologram fight? Really? If you're going to kill him off why not send him to hold off kylo in person? It accomplishes the exact same thing. It was just so stupid

Because him using every last ounce of his force powers to create a projection of himself on the other side of the galaxy shows just how freaking strong with the force he is. He also had no means off the island after sinking his X-Wing (which we can assume had been done for years, instead of just for a couple of days like in Empire. That thing isn’t flying anymore).
It’s a new thing we’ve never seen before. There’s nothing unique about him flying in and dying just like Obi-Wan did. I give Johnson a lot of credit for stepping out on a ledge and expanding things in terms of what The Force can do. The Leia in space thing was pretty dumb, but I thought Luke’s final moments and Kylo and Rey communicating were awesome additions to the universe.

in Episode IV with Obi Wan holding Vader off. The hologram was new, and a lot better and showed how powerful Luke really was. And it made Kylo his ***** because he never saw it coming.

Just got back from seeing it. When I left the theater, I wasn't sure if I liked the movie or not. After thinking about it... I'm disappointed. TLJ isn't a bad movie, but I can't really call it a good Star Wars movie. Seems like Rian Johnson took what JJ gave him and said, "Yeah, we're not gonna be doing that." Who is Snoke? Nobody important. Who were Rey's parents? Just a couple drunks with a gambling problem. What about Luke Skywalker? Oh we decided to kill him off. Even Mark Hamill disagreed with the character arc, apparently. I'm all for new ideas and directions, but when you take away certain elements and themes, it really stops being a Star Wars movie. I think Disney has made a massive mistake.

Truly did not like it and almost fell asleep.... had a nice dinner before so that may be part of it.... but it has some new characters and they need to develop them more and make me really like or hate them....

I just left theatres and am in shock. I thought it was a complete abortion. The worst Star Wars movie I’ve seen and I’m sad about it. I thought they ruined Luke Skywalker’s character which is one of the best in movie history. Just terrible. Thought it made the prequels look like critically acclaimed master pieces. Adam Driver really sucks. Kylo Ren had potential as villain but they completely mismanaged him from the start. Just awful. Poe And Rea are the only hope to salvage the last **** show in this trilogy. It really has potential to be the worst trilogy in the bunch.

I agree with most of this but I think it was also a bad movie. Just wrecked the franchise for me.
My wife and I both had the same feeling at the end. We really don't care what happens in Episode IX, and will probably just catch it on video. Never thought I'd say that.
I don't get all the venom here. I grew up on a star wars bed spread in the eighties. I'm a lifer. I saw it at the matinee and loved it. People want to protect certain themes from the original trilogy and burn the franchise down for developing beyond certain themes? What's the point of making that movie? Go rewatch the originals.
I don't love everything in the new ones. I didn't dig on Del Toro (brilliant in fear and loathing). They are far and away better than the godawful prequels and are at least in step with ep 6 imo, with 8 edging 7.

That Mark Hamill interview will haunt Rian Johnson for the rest of his career. ...The one where he was asked about Luke's role in TLJ and Hamill responded with something like "I went to Rian and said I have fundamental differences with literally every choice you're making for this character but I trust you so I'm going with it."
Mark Hamill lived with that role for all his adult life. Rian Johnson showed incredible hubris by not listening to him. And I doubt he ever lives it down.

This is easily the most polarizing Star Wars movie. There are some people that really, really hate it and a bunch who think it’s awesome. I fall in the latter category, and I think over time it will be more appreciated.
The argument that Johnson ignored everything Abrams set up is wrong. Abrams was an executive producer on the film and helped with the hiring process for Episode 8. Plus he recently agreed to direct Episode 9. I just don’t think he would’ve stayed involved if any of the main story arcs in 8 contradicted his master plan.

Also, let's not forget that Luke Skywalker was kind of a whiny little ***** for most of the original trilogy. I found it entirely plausible that he would grow up to be a grumpy old whining jerk. So I was down with it.

I finally saw it last night and I have to say that I'm surprised at some of the negative responses. I thought it was great. Certainly in the Top 3 with A New Hope and Empire. Like with any movie, there are things that worked and things that didn't. I didn't necessarily care for Benecio Del Toro's character (maybe it was just the off and on stutter thing) and that whole scene with the casino could have been much better. And I didn't quite get the Super Leia scene. I thought it only added a layer of confusion to the character.
I loved the humor in it. I know some people didn't but I thought it was great. The scene at the beginning with Poe and Hux had me literally LOLing out loud. And I love what they did with Luke's character. The idea that he wouldn't evolve as a person over time is ridiculous. I thought they did a good job of explaining why he had made the choices he did.
And I love the fact that Rey's parents are nobodies. I actually came out of Force Awakens disappointed that she was just going to be another Skywalker or a Solo or a Kenobi. Not everybody has to be related.

Eh... I'm not a fan of the Finn-Rose subplot either but it was logically albeit somewhat loosely tied to Poe's subplot. I wish one of two things had been done re: Finn-Rose: 1. Combined and streamlined with Poe's; 2. Keep it but Finn isn't stopped by Rose.

The humor was one of the worst parts. Felt like I was watching a Marvel movie. And the way they killed off the biggest character in the series was blasphemous. We waited 40 years to see how he would die and that's what they give us? C'mon. Poe, Finn, and Ray are all boring predictable, characters. They have no personality. Kylo is the only interesting character left and he's a little *****.
Compared to the middle SW movies, this was a masterpiece. Compared to the old SW movies, this is a 5.5 at best.

I have it a 5.5 as well but I've been really surprised by a lot of my other diehard Star Wars friends have gone to see it this weekend and loved it.
Our preacher likes to say that the opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference. That's kind of where I'm at with the franchise. With Force Awakens, I still wanted to argue about it and make my case as to what was good or bad. Now I just don't really care anymore.

I thought this was one of the better Star Wars movies to date. Yes the humor didn’t really fit the overall tone of the movie, and there were a couple of minor scene that were stupid, but they did very little to detract from the movie.
I thought the Luke story line was excellent. I’m pretty sure I would be greatly disturbed and withdrawn from everyone if I had created another Vader without trying to. Having Luke fight Ren as an apparition really showed just how powerful he is with the force, and him going out like Obi Wan and Yoda seemed to solidify the fact that the story is passing on to the new characters; “to you from failing hands we throw...” Absolutely no complaints here. It seems like some of you are bitching because you didn’t get to see another stupid meaningless lightsaber duel where Luke goes full on Clark Kent and saves the galaxy single handily. Deal with it. Some movies you have to think about to enjoy. Best one since Empire Strikes Back

Empire was hated when it came out as well. TLJ isn’t as good as Empire, but I think it will be appreciated more as time goes on. I’ve seen a lot of people that weren’t sure about it after the first viewing but LOVED it the second time. I will be going to see it again sometime this week.

Was more than made up for in the Poe/Admiral subplot. The arch there was very un-Star Wars like (traditionally) and very welcome. The fact Poe tried to be a hero and the writers let him fail at it in a way that still left him with credibility for trying was excellent.
It also went against the grain because it wasn’t some “super impossible mission that some character managed to pull out of their *** right as the ship blew up” (as Lucas loved to do)... it was far more human.

For those of you that like Kevin Smith he is a super fan of Star Wars and did an hour and a half discussion about the movie on his facebook page. It was great and I enjoyed his take on it.
