Dont worry, no spoilers.

Boy is there a lot to digest in this one. It’s going to be a really polarizing movie among Star Wars fans. Johnson definitely took some HUGE gambles. Some of them paid off big time, others I’m still trying to soak in. Definitely need to see it again to process it all. But my initial reaction is that it’s on par with The Force Awakens but definitely doesn’t play it safe like that movie did. Didn’t love every part but as a whole I really liked it.

Thoughts for those who have seen it?

I was pretty disappointed with it. Need to watch it again but the forced humor sucks

I agree that the humor was too much at times.

My two biggest issues with the film were the Finn and Rose storyline and then a certain scene involving Leia.

Otherwise, I liked it a lot. Hamill was excellent, Adam Driver is by far the best member of the new cast, and I respect Johnson for taking risks and trying to expand the universe. Did all of the risks pay off? Not necessarily. But the big moments delivered for the most part and the movie did a lot more good than bad for me.

I thought it was great. Start to finish it's a new kind of Star Wars movie. Actually, it's just a really good movie set in the Star Wars universe.

It's not really new....SPOILERS

I thought it was great. Start to finish it's a new kind of Star Wars movie. Actually, it's just a really good movie set in the Star Wars universe.

Uh...really? Lot's of familiar themes just like Force Awakens.

We start with an evacuation....just like Hoth
Rey pleading with Ben in front of Snoke......Luke pleading with Anaking in front of The Emperor
Sneaking onto Snokes ship to disable the tracker.....sneaking around the death star to disable the tractor beam
Rey and Luke on the Island.....Luke and Yoda on Dagoba

And there were more.....The movie was good and I enjoyed it because it's Star Wars. But, they could be telling an entirely new story and they're not.....they're just rehashing the movies we love.

My comment was more about the tone of the movie being new, not necessarily the story line. Obviously it's a Rebellion vs Empire story line and many of the plots are repeats.

However, in my opinion it's a better MOVIE than at least most of the others. My wife said she'd never laughed so much in a Star Wars movie. There were also multiple onion cuttings in this one as well. It's an emotional roller coaster, which I think adds a better dynamic than many other Star Wars movies.

I liked it a lot and I'm a Star Wars lifer. Saw A New Hope at age 8.

This isn’t a rehash at all. I can see where people would think that with TFA, but this one takes big risks and tries new things to expand the lore.

Is there symmetry to scenes in prior movies? Sure, but it also goes down different paths you don’t expect at all. It’s inaccurate to say Kylo is just like Vader in ROTJ because of what happens with Kylo AFTER the scene you are referring to.

overall a good movie. i don't like the forced jokes. i don't like the made up characters that are solely there for selling of merchandise (the penguin things). they brought nothing to the movie.

still questions to be answered. and i don't believe what she was told about her parents.

but i liked it.

As far as the forced humor, it was mostly hit with some misses but those have been part of the series since day 1.

They are working to appeal to the full demographic of fans other than the current star wars base fans.

It's crazy that this movie story line has last FORTY years, and is only getting bigger. And it almost didn't happen.

There are a few epic scenes that had me almost on the edge of my seat. Like the other movies, you remember key scenes and the overall direction of each part of the story. This screenplay was well thought out and carefully developed.

I cannot imagine being Lucas and watching Disney do this without him now. It's become bigger than life in many ways and some of the actors will be remembered more as their character in the movie than their actual lives.

I thought it sucked!!! It had some memorable highlights and I was kind of liking it until the end. What they did to Luke ruined it! It just wasn’t time for it and the manner was not fitting for the character. No interest in Ep 9 at this point.

Interesting. Film is subjective and everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I thought Luke’s entire arc was the best part of the movie and this may be the best version of Luke we’ve ever gotten.

I thought that it seemed...

..a little directionless. Lots of filler like Finn/Rose journey into the entire casino island, which I thought was really stupid. I think these kinds of films work best when they are straightforward and easy to follow. Kind of reminds me how of how I felt after Dark Knight Rises.

The Finn and Rose stuff was definitely the worst part of the movie. Felt like something out of Hunger Games or Harry Potter. I was fine with some of it, but the part when they are on the casino planet is rough. Pretty prequelish in all honesty.

But for me it didn’t ruin the rest of the movie. It was just 20 or so minutes that seemed out of place. I thought the rest of the film was fantastic, though.

Yeah I thought they let Luke be Luke and not be some cryptic Jedi master teacher rambling on. "See you around, kid."

I agree with you 100%. Luke was the best part of the movie. I’ve been waiting since 1983 to see him on the big screen again. That character had so much potential and the ability to really pull us hard core original trilogy fans into the new era. But they just killed him off.....too soon and in an unfitting manner. We’ll probably see him as a force ghost but it’ll be a minor role. That’s just not befitting of a iconic movie hero. I’m not at all interested in Ep 9 at this time.

Mark tried to talk Rian out of it but Rian did it anyway. I thought it was a crappy move.

I enjoyed the movie but I thought the casting sucked besides a few characters and the acting was bad except for a few characters. Disney tries to include everyone for all viewers to enjoy and it takes away from the movie because they don't pick the best actors/actresses. Giving Del Toro a stutter was stupid and Leia surviving a ship exploding and flying in space for a bit?? What?? BB8 fighting off a bunch of soldiers and driving an AT-ST?? What?? Luke disappearing at the end?? Eh I was entertained but the movie isn't as good as the last two that came out.

One of the dumbest story arcs for an iconic character in the history of movies.Whoever signed off on this at Disney needs to be slapped. Not all that interested in seeing where it goes from here.Rey still blows as a character.

I would agree with the Luke personal struggle arc. Seeing it all from his point of view 30 years after the fact was pretty awesome.

This is where Marvel is kicking

I enjoyed the movie but I thought the casting sucked besides a few characters and the acting was bad except for a few characters.

the Star Wars movies in the ***. Star Wars has casted awful, outside of a few main characters. The Marvel movies seem to put perfect actors in every role, even the secondary ones. You are right about Benicio too. A great actor with great lines that they screwed up by giving him a terrible stutter that didn’t fit. And that girl running around with Finn was terrible. Seemed like a girl they grabbed out of the computer lab at Cal Berkely and asked her if she wanted to play a major hero in the movie.

Still thought the movie overcame the deficiencies and was good overall.

MORE SPOILERISH STUFF!

Yes... there was some of the same plot formula used BUT there is a clear signal that they are leaving the old ideas behind.

They announced this right off the bat with the exchange between Poe and the monologing Gen. Hux, but I guess most fans were thinking this was just for comedy. It was saying the old days are over of Jedi preaching, "Dark side... it is BAAAADDD!", and Sith or Empirish characters growling, "Gonna crush yer *** Rebel SCUM!"

That's what this movie is all about. Everything is changing and the overall direction of who is or is not is uncertain.

The hate feels more like folk mad because someone moved their cheese or did not read between the lines.

I can understand now why Johnson is not directing IX. He's got some major work to do planning and getting the writing done for X, XI, and XII.

Who was that overlord dude that Ren waxed? Also, the only redeeming part of the whole movie was Ren and Rey's yin and yang stuff. Not a fan of much of the direction, but it's beyond salvage in disney's hands.

My 14 year old fell asleep. I literally had to wake him up.

I thought it was a lot of fun, but really frustrating and confusing. None of the questions I had from TFA got answered, and the characters that lived/died made any sense. I enjoyed it, but I wasn't blown away by the storyline.

I think the whole point of going to that planet was simply to introduce the character in the last scene. Completely unnecessary, but I think that is why. Del-toro's character could have come from anywhere.

Was terrible. I've never been so disappointed in a movie. Hardly any questions I had got answered. Too much cheesy humor. I really hate what Disney is doing to this franchise. They totally missed on the opportunity they had with Snoke as well.

I never want to watch it again.. Spoilers ahead..

Leia flying in space? WTF? I thought they were going to cut to Kylo Ren using the force to push her back to safety.. And that was going to be cool. But evidently Johnson just wanted to add an ambiguous and confusing layer to her.

Snoke went out like a ***** with no explanation of who he was. Actually.. If he had never been in either movie it wouldn't have mattered. Just go with Ren and Hux and be done with it.

But it's the handling of Luke where the unforgivable sins were committed. Star Wars fans have waited 40 years to see him operate as a wise old Jedi master. But instead we got some Rian Johnson ******** about hero deconstruction. Well 17 you Rian. I don't need your social commentary. I wanted good vs evil, Jedi vs Sith, hope vs oppression.

And let's not even talk about how the first time we met Yoda he was the sole caretaker of the ways of the Jedi, but here he blatantly says it's all just a load of crap. Unreal.

There was a lot more to hate... Maz's appearance? Dumb. Convoluted hyper space tracking, huh? Rey is a complete nobody? Gee that's fun.

For all TFA's flaws, JJ left the saga in a great place to move forward.. But Disney decided to allow Rian Johnson to take a massive dump on the entire series.

I'll never watch that movie again.

Hit the nail on the head. JJ set it up for this movie to be epic. The handeling of Luke should get rian banned from star wars

If that’s all they even mention about Snoke, then it was 100% wasted effort to even write him into the films. There are potentially huge story lines about him.

Overall, I liked the movie. It had a lot more going on than TFA, and I’m still trying to make sense of some of it. You have some valid points, but I still liked it in spite of most of them. FWIW, I’m not sure if I believe what was said about Rey’s parents yet... but, if it’s true, then it was in line with the very last scene. Intriguing thought, to me....

And Benicio whatever... wtf. That guy blows goats, and he blew extra specially in this one. Worthless.
