Temple will fall way back this year and if not for the league they play in, they might not win a game. That's what a 120 something Rivals recruiting ranking does for you along with losing your good coach and best players. They are basically a little sister school which is why some here take an interest.

I agree with this link below...7-8 wins and competing for the AAC Championship in 2018 would be my guess.
http://www.sbnation.com/college-foo.../temple-football-2017-preview-schedule-roster

Regarding the Temple recruiting class last year - It wasn't a great class by any means but it was also just a 16 man class based on scholarships available. Most were Rhule recruits and he can certainly evaluate talent.

Rutgers is in a tough spot being in a division with PSU, Michigan, and OSU. Even UMD is upping their game on the recruiting trail.

I think 2018 for you will depend on Collins and whatever happens at QB. Your WR group is I think senior-heavy this year too. One thing you do benefit from (and not being snarky at all; this isn't really on TU) is the AAC East basically being a 3-team division at this point. UConn has been on the decline since '10-11, Cincy has really suffered since the collapse of the BE and ECU is falling apart. If you still play Tulane that's another game that's not exactly heavy lifting. You'll likely get your wins but they won't be ones they excite John Q Public; I think Rhule actually mentioned to reporters a year or so ago that a lot of recruits visit Temple, like it, but they don't see it as 'big-time' football.

TU will also be seriously tested in terms of recruiting. Just my opinion but I think a lot of the local kids that were considering Temple were doing so because of Rhule, NOT for Temple. It looks like its going to be 'wait and see' regarding the new staff and I remember reading somewhere that some of the guys who were on the fence for you last year weren't fans after meeting Collins.

yesrutgers01,

I'm going to say a 5-7, 6-6 type of year. Starting some new guys at key positions, particularly QB. If whoever wins the job is able to immediately make his mark, then the win total could climb to 7. Anything more to me would be a bonus. I think the 2018 and '19 seasons are when the Owls are capable to making some headlines again.

Thanks for the response. I just looked at your schedule and can see where you may get the 5-6 wins from. If lucky, you sneak in an additional win but also could just as easily sneak in an additional loss as well. You guys lost a significant number of your team and your HC as well as replacing a multi year starting QB. That is a tough hurdle for anyone.

I wasn't here to troll or say that Temple has an overall better program than we do. But if you can't say that Temple fielded a better team than we did the past 2 seasons, you're wearing scarlet colored glasses. They beat Penn State in 2015, they hung with Notre Dame. They have six times as many players drafted in that time period than we did. I was just wondering how a program like Temple is deveoping guys like Robby Anderson who's playing with the Jets or Tyler Matekavich who was an absolute monster and drafted in the NFL. The only reason I brought up Temple is because they are in our same geographic location. I didn't say their overall program is better, I meant their team was better. If we would've played them the past two years, we would not have been the favorite.

Temple is better than us. Time will tell if that will continue. Nothing wrong with this topic OP ..Some ppl get bent out of shape too easily

Last year, they 100% beat us. Year before, good chance they beat us. But for the past fracking recent forever- not so much. yes, they may have won one but they were not better that us at all over the period starting since Schiano, even in the crappy early start to his career here. Temple has mostly been worse than us while also being in lesser conferences.
And the thing of it is that they could end up worse than us this year or they may win a game more but they are playing in a completely different world.

Knight Shift,

Great question. He did an admirable job under center during our Cherry & White game. He wasn't as "flashy" as the recruit from FL but AR did get the job done and moved the ball downfield. How that translates to his first snap under center in South Bend is a whole other story. PJ left TU as our all time passing leader and threw for over 10,000 yards. We do have a strong WR corp. It's damn good, but we have to see how our OL performs going forward. Can AR have a similar career as PJ's? Lots of factors have to break right for him like it did for Walker, but I think it's possible. I think we're going to eventually lose Frank Nutile to transfer. He's the kid from Bosco. He's been 2nd in command, played a little during the Walker regime and just can't see him willing to stay onboard as a number 2 or possibly even the number 3. Would probably be a key addition for you guys if he does decide to leave North Broad.

Honestly I was never impressed with Nutile- seemed like more of a product of DBP being good as opposed to him really making their offense go. If Russo ends up 2nd string to your newer FL kid I could actually see him trying to transfer down the line though that's pure speculation with certain factors having to fall in place (what happens with Marchi, etc).

No they're not.

They're in a weak pansy conference. They don't have to deal with attrition of players like real conferences do.

If during a bad year, you can still make a bowl, because your conference is weak, I guess you can say that's good.

The Big East now the AAC, has a few talented teams and because they have such a weak schedule they are often healthy and can upset a team they normally never would had they played in a real conference.

The B1G East and the SEC West could give you there worst team and they probablly win the AAC.

Not to get off tangent here, but I do look forward to our home and home with the Terps. Hope I get to see Anthony Russo or Todd Centeio (the FL recruit) throw for 400+ against you guys.

Lame post. Conferences aside right now temple would beat us by a TD or two straight up. That's all I'm saying. I'm beginning to think guys like you are actually pro Ash guys that create alternate handles with names of other B1G schools to make it seem Ash has universal support. Why else would a MD guy be over here commenting on this subject matter and be so adamant about it ? You better get up a little earlier to sneak this stuff past the moose !

You do realize TheB1GTerp has 7500 posts and has been a member for over 9 years?! So by your logic he's really an RU fan who's been masquerading as a Terp fan all this time just laying in the weeds waiting for the right moment to rise up and make it appear that Ash has more support than he actually does? Yeah ok. If I had DJ Spankme's mod privileges I might be inclined to change your name to RUaMoron.

Which is truly pathetic that if Rutgers as dead last in the B1G they could have won the AAC. I'm not saying they would, but they could playing that schedule.

I mean Temple lost to Army and Wake Forrest and were AAC champs.

Temple is a good team that shouldn't be taken lightly, but their record and health is vastly inflated by being in the AAC.

DM's offense here was just so damn bad, made worse when we lost Grant, that I would have to give Temple a very strong odds to have won if we played last year. But as you have pointed out and I mentioned before, the grind of the B1G East every damn week and add in a strong OOC game and the cross overs. It is very hard to get up each week and stay healthy. If you do not have a strong 3 deep, it is a beast of a season to get through. If Temple played our schedule last year, they would not have looked good at all.
I just hate the absolute loser mentality of so many of our fans on this site with no concept of things outside of win/loss or stats.

Games aren't played in a vacuum. Emotions play a big part in things. The Army game felt like a bit of a come-down after the big season the year before, and even though the Owls had a pretty good lead at one point (and were dominating), they took their foot off the gas and let Army back into it. And Army brings it every time, so if you let down, they'll hurt you.

Wake Forest was right after Rhule left and they were deflated. Hey, the games both count, and they don't make excuses (though I will), but if you watched both games, it was clear what was happening.

I think you're completely misremembering the Army game. Army won 28-13 and Temple never lead by more than 7. They were up 10-7 at the half. Army took the lead in the 3rd and never relinquished it from that point. It was also the opener for each team, TU was at home, and TU lost their bowl game, so I don't know how 'let down' could be a factor.

...with WF/Rhule leaving, Taggart also left USF but they managed to clip South Carolina in Birmingham. I'm sure that the Rhule situation did have a detrimental affect on them (they seemed lost for half the game) for that game but for the Army game I think you're way off.

TU last year was very similar to us in '08 where they worked past some early bumps/bruises, won a close, crucial midseason game in the last minute, started playing their best football in November/December, caused a lot of turnovers and got the breaks when they needed them. They also benefitted from one of the worst schedules in the country, with Charlotte & UMass OOC, half of their division collapsing over the last few years while drawing the weaker teams out of the AAC West in the regular season (clearly not TU's fault).

Can we just stop with the "if Temple played our schedule last year" crap. If Temple played the Rutgers schedule last year, they also would need 4 years of recruiting under the Big 10 name to make it apples to apples. I can tell you right now, Rhule would have recruited a hell of a lot better than Flood did if Temple had the Big 10 name there.

You can't make the comparison.

And we all recognize how poor our recruiting was for the past few years.
I hope you are feeling even better.
But let's get something straight. Any kid with an offer from Rutgers and an offer from Temple(legacies don't count) is a fuxing moron if he selects Temple. There is zero conceivable reason to select Temple, zero.

Well in 2016, 7 members of Temple's class had Rutgers offers. Most were offered as Ash was trying to make a late push. You can say what you want about Temple's program but at least Temple has a chance to compete and win championships in their own division. How often is Rutgers going to even be in the top half of their division? Rutgers may be getting the $$$$ but as a fan, what does that get you?

Id rather take my chances in the B1G East than the AAC East, where no one really cares if you win. TU never broke 30k at home after losing to Army, even after you turned your season around and have been having winning seasons on a fairly consistent basis since 2009.

And if I had a fat ugly wife there would be a good chance no other guys are going to try to bang her. Kind of the same thing. You really think it is better to potentially contend in the AAC most years for about a mil or so a year than to be in the most prestigious conference in america making 40mil or so with a full share. Let's not even discuss what the B1G brings to a research University like ours.
I can easily see Rutgers becoming a Iowa type program in the next 5-10 years. But hell, hope you enjoy AAC games that you may or may not have a chance to win.

BTW- outside of Russo and we know if we stayed pro-style, he would never have considered Temple, there we not many other committable offers. They may list us as an offer but if I have explain that process to you, then you are on the wrong site.

I believe you are referring to 2015. And while they did beat PSU(big props for doing so) would they have if they just had a cross country overtime battle against a pretty good team rather then it being the season opener. Not to take away the win, that get that bragging right but it bears out what we are saying about a grueling schedule vs a easy schedule.

Temple has had two good years and we had to bad years, but as you say, they shouldnt get to far of themselves, it all can change again very quickly

Fact my ***. Temple played two P-5 schools, lost to both and one of them was Wake Forest! Temple always was, is now and always will be a little sister school aching for a seat at the table. You should be thanking your lucky stars the AAC needed teams or you'd still be losing to MAC schools by 60 points and your Admin would be voting on whether to cancel football altogether. You should go away now so this ridiculous thread can end.

Rutgers Football is almost as bad as Rutgers Basketball. I don't know how RU fans derive any joy being demolished in a league they don't belong.

As for Rutgers FB history, even Bobby Wallace was 4-3 against RU. He didn't win against ANYONE else. He was 2-2 v 1 AA and 2-9 vs the MAC

Flood was 2-0 against Temple. We also somehow managed to win the Lambert when he was here. We've only won it once thus far, but that's infinity more times than TU at this point. Terry Shea won 11 games in 5 years at Rutgers and 4 Big East games total. He only beat 1 Big East team twice. Congrats TU.

The point is that under similar circumstances (conference & coach) Temple football and Rutgers football are one of the same. I do believe that in time Rutgers football will surpass Temple. The fact that we play in the B10 conference will allow us to recruit better athletes and hire more qualified coaches. In terms B.B. History there's no comparison between the two schools. Temple should be reaching out to the ACC and begging for an invite. A Temple team playing in the ACC will be a formidable opponent.

You forgot something fairly gigantic- *with a good coach*, because otherwise they'd likely pretty much be what they were in the Big East. That's pretty much the story for most non-blueblood programs.

Temple should be reaching out to the ACC and begging for an invite. A Temple team playing in the ACC will be a formidable opponent.

The move to the B1G alone does not help with recruiting. It's almost a catch 22. Any kids who are good enough to compete in the B1G are going to be offered by other B1G teams. When we are getting blown out and shut out, they aren't going to come. We've been in the B1G for 3 years now and it hasn't really helped recruiting. All the top guys we looked at went to the B1G. Just not Rutgers.
