How did Temple football surpass us? Temple had 3 players drafted and 6 players sign free agent contracts. If we played Temple last year, I think they would've beat us. We have way more support and better facilities than Temple in every single way. I don't get how Maryland and Temple had better programs than we did last year.

Wonder about the OP sometimes. Seems to have a major thing for AC (stole his lunch money?), and now wondering if Temple "surpassed" us. Of course they have not. They are in the AAC, play in a rented stadium where nobody watches them play, and they will drift back to irrelevancy soon enough. RU is in a trough and on a major upswing.

No matter what level you're at, no matter what conference you're in, the right coach can work wonders and the wrong coach can cause chaos. It's just that the wonders are harder and the chaos easier at some schools.

Temple has done an outstanding job of late. But like most schools, it will be challenging to maintain it.

I have nothing against AC, I just said I didn't think he was going to get drafted. Which he wasn't. I hope he makes the team. And Temple would've 100% beat us if we played them last year.

Maybe, maybe not. With Grant playing and Gio full strength- I would have liked our chances.
Don't understand the point of the thread, other than to rile people up and piss about Flood some more. That never happens here.

Exactly. The right coach in a difficult location (Temple) can develop players and win. Flood got better players, didn't develop them enough and struggled.
If the new coach is average they will drop bad to traditional Temple.

I have nothing against Temple, and I am happy for the Temple fans to enjoy the recent success. You could say both Temple and Rutgers fans have been long suffering. Rhule was a good coach with the right energy and personality. He did a great job.

Obviously, there are questions whether Temple can maintain post-Rhule. There are some examples of long down-trodden schools that have maintained success following the departure of the coach who made the break-through. E.g., Stanford under David Shaw post-Harbaugh. But then there are other examples (unfortunately Rutgers with Flood post-Schiano). Time will tell.

Temple is interesting. They had some decent coaches - at position level too. Their OL coach had 2 hours of coaching video on YouTube and it was best OL teaching I ever saw. Temple also began to recruit differently than others. While everyone was spread crazy and chasing the faster and lighter players, Temple was going for size and power. They used to be the worst team for Army to play because Army used to get steamrolled for hundreds of yards/points. Lighter Army teams couldn't handle the beef. Temple's passing game was almost as non-existent as Army's. With RU, PSU, SU, Maryland and others going for faster guys Temple knew they couldn't chase the same players. They developed players well for the power game. I knew a kid who was a 240lb state champ basketball center in HS. He was a starting 325lb OL behemoth when Temple got done with him

Excellent points in these posts. It will be interesting to see with BOTH PJ Walker and Rhule gone, what they do this year. Nice to See PJ Walker had options as a free agent:

“It was the Colts, Eagles, Ravens, Minnesota, Arizona and Denver,” Walker said. “I had quite a few teams from the sixth round on constantly contacting me and I went with the best opportunity and fit for me.”

How can anyone figure that 1-2 seasons is now some sort of long-lasting declarative statement? Do people forget our own history? Oh yeah, after 06-07 we had 'arrived' and were now going to be a power force moving forward...TU had a good program-builder in Golden, a guy who recruited well for 2 years in Daz and a great coach thus far in Rhule. They also played in the MAC and ultra watered-down AAC when they had/ have had their best seasons. What was their record the 2 years they played in an AQ league during this time? 6-17, including yes, a 2-10 season. They've put more than 35k in the stands at home against a team not named PSU, ND or Rutgers exactly once. They also lost to a 6-6 9th/10th place Wake Forest team in a bowl game approximately an hour or so from their campus.

...their true test will come in a year or so once Rhule's players are cycling out of the program and the new guys are coming in...gee, where have we seen that go haywire before???

Support and facilities ? Sure but they have players and swag. We don't right now. Kind of simple to figure out.

And look at one of their coaches using it to openly negatively recruit.
What a douche nozzle he is. He is a graduate assistant who was not at Temple when Rhule coached and this is his first year.
Coaches remaining from Matt Rhule's rule: TWO. Their tight ends coach (ZERO tight ends selected in draft). Their OL coach, and one OL was selected for draft).

Here's his bio:

Omar Hales begins his first season working with Temple football as a graduate assistant for the defense.
Hales joined the program in January after two-year stint with Imhotep Charter High School working as both a substitute teacher and the Dean of Students. Hales' relationship with the Philadelphia football powerhouse runs deeper, however, as he served as the football team's defensive coordinator from 2010-2013, compiling a 38-5 record during the three season span while allowing just 10.3 points per game.
A Philadelphia native and former two-year letterman for the Owls, Hales graduated with a bachelor's degree in business administration from the Fox School of Business at Temple University in 2010. He is currently working on his graduate degree within Temple's School of Tourism and Hospitality Management.

LMAO. Love this board.

The program has done a much better job hiring head coaches. That helped changed the culture. The support staffs of the 3 previous regimes also had a talent for finding prospects who flew under the radar of the "big name" schools. That's how we succeeded. Our facilities, while they pale in comparison to the bells and whistles of a P5 program are leaps and bounds better that what we had.

Remains to be seen if the new staff can keep momentum going. Some of the CFB "experts" think Geoff Collins is going to be able to do that. Time will tell.

Say all you want about Temple as a football program, but even in their best season (last year) in program history, PROGRAM HISTORY, in which they did all they could possibly do (win their conference - the AAC), they were rewarded with a trip to the Military Bowl, playing in the same stadium 2 games in a row, and Lost, to Wake Forest. So that's the "mecca" that we've fallen behind as a program? Our team right now is worse than their team, but as a program .. sheesh. Some of our fans need to get a grip.

For the record, G5 conference champions don't have their pick of the litter regarding bowl games. Military bowl made the most sense once Western Michigan all but locked up the Cotton Bowl bid. Even though we "only ended up in Annapolis" as you say, for those final weeks of the 2016 season, it was fun as a fan to think we had a shot at being the G5 rep if WMU had slipped up. For all the money in the world, I'll take that any day of the week over the 78-0 drubbings. You can receive your 30 or 40 million dollar a year paycheck, but face facts, you're never leapfrogging over OSU, UM or PSU.

Let us remember we won 8 games the first year with a lousy coach. And remember Purdue has not won 8 games in a season since 2007. Flood ruined the program. Look forward to playing Temple again in a few years.

I'll take our 2014 season over your last 2 any day of the week and twice on Saturdays...I'd rather take our chances in the B1G that just about completely not matter in the AAC, where a championship and 10 wins doesnt even get you in the Top 25.

Nobody here really gives a crap about Temple except for guys like the OP who gets his nuts off by starting stupid threads to get a rise out of others here.
Nobody in Philadelphia cares about Temple. Their recruiting class was even worse than Uconn's and not even on the Rivals charts so the recruits don't care either. They're one of the all-time worst football programs in the history of the game and the only school to ever get kicked out of a league because they were so un-competitive.
Now go back to your board and start another thread about how you would rather compete against Uconn, and Tulsa in front of 5,000 fans in your rented stadium.

Not bragging at all. I don't post here often and when I do, I'm not here to flame, but some of you folks seem to have a true hard-on for my uni and feel there's a need for the constant put downs. That's what bothers me. Does it make some of you feel more superior by playing the "one upsmanship" game? We're 2 totally different programs so I don't know why there's a constant comparison. People here need to make comments because we had 3 guys drafted??? WTF fellas?

I told you. We've had success hiring coaches. Luck? Maybe, or maybe it's just that we finally have an administration after many years of ineptitude that knows what they're doing. Give us at least that benefit. We're a city school, so yeah, we have to rent a place to play. Same can be said for USF. Didn't hurt them hiring Charlie Strong did it? Doesn't hurt Pitt too much does it?

Yeah, we ended up in the Military Bowl and lost to a mediocre Wake Forest. Could have and should have been a W but perhaps the entire coaching staff leaving for Waco had a little something to do with the defensive breakdowns in the 1st half. An L is still an L, but you know what, as a long supporting fan and alum of thr Owls, I like the direction the program has taken and i hope Coach Collins can continue it. If he leaves after year 3 or 4 for an SEC program which he is likely to do, then that'll likely mean the program is still chugging along and trending upward which is quite alright with me. As I said in my original post before this topic turned into a pissing match, time will tell if we'll be able to do that.

Good luck in 2017.

Don't think anyone is after you or Temple in general. The OP achieved his objective in riling people up by saying we were "surpassed" by Temple. That is naturally going to get people on the defensive and taking shots at Temple. Temple has had a great run under the last two coaches and hopefully they can continue the success under their current coach. A lot will depend on QB play with PJ Walker graduating. Good luck in 2017.

I wasn't here to troll or say that Temple has an overall better program than we do. But if you can't say that Temple fielded a better team than we did the past 2 seasons, you're wearing scarlet colored glasses. They beat Penn State in 2015, they hung with Notre Dame. They have six times as many players drafted in that time period than we did. I was just wondering how a program like Temple is deveoping guys like Robby Anderson who's playing with the Jets or Tyler Matekavich who was an absolute monster and drafted in the NFL. The only reason I brought up Temple is because they are in our same geographic location. I didn't say their overall program is better, I meant their team was better. If we would've played them the past two years, we would not have been the favorite.

Madchuck,

Coaching has a lot to do with it. The previous regimes found prospects that were overlooked by bigger name schools. Maybe it was because lack of size, speed or in Hasaan Reddick's case, the kid suffered 2 major injuries in high school so I think our program benefits because of them being snubbed, they come to North Broad with a chip on their shoulder and have something to prove. They, I think, want to prove the experts wrong. In Golden's and Rhule's cases, they both did a brilliant job of establishing relationships with the high schools within a 3 hour radius of Philadelphia. That was huge for us.

Coach Collins because of the late start didn't have the time to establish those networks so the locals are waiting to see how he pans out. If he has anywhere near the connection that Rhule established, I firmly believe we'll be in great shape for the remainder of his time in Philly.

The 2017 season is one I expect us to take a step back. You don't replace 3 guys to the draft without missing a beat and the QB issue is a question mark whether it's the recruit we brought in this year from Florida, Anthony Russo or Frank Nutile. Opening the season at South Bend on national tv @3:30 is going to make one of those 3 guys look like a champ or a chump.

It's too bad we didn't have this administration and success back when it really counted. We lost 20 years or more because of the ineptitude but to all future coaches and players that suit up for us, I think they all know and realize that this isn't a dead end place like it used to be.

Don't know, but there's an example of a guy overstepping his bounds. Coaching is considered by most a fraternity, and it would not surprise me if he gets rebuked by the Temple head coach.
