The last year for my wife and I, specifically her, has been hard. It's like something you'd hear in a country music song. We booked a weeklong vacation in the Keys for her birthday last year that we were never able to take because she was diagnosed with stage 2 cancer. A couple of weeks after that one of our dogs died. A couple of months after that her grandpaw, who was everything to her, passed away. A month after that another dog suddenly died.
Since then all the reports have been great and we're hoping to find out soon that she's in remission. So, we're ready to take that beach vacation again. For those of you who know how much chemo, radition and surgery cost then you know how much money we don't have. We're not wanting to go anywhere luxurious or expensive, but not somewhere like PCB either because I'll end up on a 7-day bender karaoke'ing to Queen and Bon Jovi at some beachside bar. So where do you guys go that I've never heard of and you don't have to take out a 2nd mortgage to afford it?

Without a budget given. I'd guess all inclusive resort in Mexico. My recommendation is not proven since I haven't been in quite a few years. However the trip to Cozumel we did take was very memorable and mostly inexpensive after the airfare. Maybe this helps.
Btw sorry bout hard times. Hope things get better.

try CheapCaribbean.com ... I went to an all inclusive resort in Mexico using that website and got a pretty sweet deal. They bundle everything, including your flights I'm pretty sure.

We're staying in Seagrove this year. The wife found a nice 3 BR VRBO just across the street from the beach for $185 a night. I know it's 45 minutes away from PCB, but maybe you can have some self control.

Zihuatanejo is our new go to beach. Laid back, reasonable, beautiful, historic, great restaurants, not the glass and concrete of a Cancun. Direct flights from Houston. Dinners with drinks for two - 50 bucks. 10 bucks for an hour massage. $150 up charter boats for sailfish. $2 cab rides. Check out the Aura Del Mar hotel. Tell Carlos I sent you. BTW - Shawshank Redemption filmed here.

Edisto Island, SC. Laid back, no condos, houses only. Only a handful of restaurants and they're all open door, flip flop attire. If you just want to chill at the beach in a very relaxed atmosphere, this is your place. Ever since we moved to SC this is where we vacation every year.

Folly Beach is not bad either. Similar but still very close to downtown Charleston.

Try my neck of the woods. We have some of the best beaches you will ever find and if you look around, it can be economical. Just google Anna Maria Beach, Bradenton Beach, Longboat Key, or Siesta Beach.

We live in Bradenton Beach and have foe about 7 years now. While some of the areas are crowded (crowded beach for us is someone is within 30 feet of you).

You can look for areas around there and fly into Sarasota. Don't come during season (November - April). If you have any questions or want specific recommendations, pm me.

If you can afford two plane tickets to Cancun... (cheap on Southwest out of MEM)... fly down and rent a car. Do not step one foot into Cancun. Drive an hour south to Akumal. Rent a small place (VRBO) on the cove. Awesome little fishing village. Unspoiled by commercial tourism. Couple of stores to buy everything you need for a few days. Swim with turtles every day. Absolutely the most relaxing thing you'll ever do. And hey.. if you want to party there's plenty of that just a $20 cab ride away into Playa. Take her to Alux Restaurant one night in Playa. (google it) It won't break the bank, the food is awesome and she'll thank you later. A lot.

You can do the whole trip for about 5 days under $2K.

I take a fishing trip to Okeechobee, FL every year and have been thoroughly surprised at how built up and nice the eastern coast of Florida is. From Palm Beach to Miami, you can find good all-inclusive type places with pretty good beaches.

Ive even done northern Florida at Amelia Island before and was thoroughly surprised. Nice, quiet, clean.

If you want to spend a little coin, go to the Atlantis at the Bahamas. Has absolutely everything you could ever want from a beach vacation on campus and more (gambling, movies, spa, great restaurants, great beaches, golf, water sports, boats, adults-only pools, etc...). Love that place. Those room prices are a turn off if you've never been. They're expensive, but everything you could ever want is within walking distance.

Carillon Beach, FL. It's super quiet, not far from PCB and has a ridiculously nice gated neighborhood of condos to rent VRBO. The beach is exceptional and was basically secluded. We rarely had anyone walking thru to other properties because most were so far away. They have a small shopping/dining downtown and 4 pools to use throughout the neighborhood. They have beachfront properties but they are of course much more expensive.

One thing thats pretty cool with the renourishment projects is the tons of shells that get pumped up. When Navarre did it my daughter had a blast finding unusual shells.
