Does anybody have experience with a StreamSmart box? I have a friend that loves it and said he cancelled his directv.

Thinking about trying it out but it's a bit pricey (close to $400) so wanted to get some other opinions

Thanks!

threw a post on FB as well. A few acquaintances responded echoing the sentiment that they love it. You can get anything on there including movies just released in the theater. Common feedback was that sometimes it can take time to find a decent feed but overall worth the money.

@Shevlin77 I'm intrigued by it as well. I have a friend that got one and he says it works well. His biggest adjustment was going from Directv and said it's just not as user friendly. I've killed Directv and looking at this due to the lack of subscription fees. If you pull the trigger, keep us posted.

Just doing a quick google search on the thing since I've never heard of it, but it really smells like a rip off at best or a scam at worst. Paying for a box that you can buy the parts of for around $50 and then paying for a less than legal streaming service that can be shut down at any time? Eh...

http://androidpcreview.com/dont-buy-this-box-streamsmart-box/6829/

Yep, it's a total scam. It's basically an android box with Kodi and some plugins installed.

I bought two a couple months ago and love them. The only problem I've got is the local feeds for NBC, CBS, and ABC. I get the national stations but not the local. IE Greenville, Spartanburg, or Ashville.

I paid $ 550.00 total for the boxes and I'm saving over $150.00 per month in cable cost. I've been able to watch the Clemson baseball games by getting the ACC feed and I've been able to watch new movies that are at the theater after they've been their for a week or so. They haven't been as hard to navigate as I thought, so I've been more than happy with this purchase.

A FireTV is $100. Install Kodi and Genesis plugins and you get about the same thing.

"About" the same thing. Whats the difference?

The SmartStream is now $260 per box so it's not far off. Comes with a wireless keyboard and mouse.

I don't know everything that is installed on a SmartStream. My assumption was that they may include hacked accounts for Netflix/HBO/etc added (I've seen these on eBay). A quick search reveals that it includes a subscription to "ChannelUp", which you may or may not be able to get outside of the SmartStream service. Either way, it's a plug-in for Kodi, as well. With Genesis (free), you can watch any show or movie, just as you can with the SmartStream. For $260 (don't know if that includes ChannelUp), you're essentially paying an extra $150+ to have some things bundled/pre-installed for you. And in either case, any of the content can go *poof* at anytime, leaving you with a $260 brick.

Where do you see a $260 model, btw? I can only find ones that are in the $350-$450 range.

Reading the comments on amazon it appears you need to spend the $ and order direct from the company. Else you won't get the tech support, and it appears ordering direct from them gets you access to faster streaming servers. Say's they don't allow their product to be sold on amazon, ebay etc... So you won't get the warranty. Another user ordered off of Amazon says he got a used unit.

I just wonder how many of the comments are faked by the company in these reviews. It seemed like all the good reviews were from people who didn't purchase it on amazon. So why were they giving reviews on amazon?

I just ordered a NVIDIA Shield TV Pro. After reading reviews on several sites I decided to take a chance on it. I will let you know how it turns out.

When you go to checkout you get a $100 off applied automatically. I ordered it this morning after seeing that "coupon".

I'm super busy traveling for work and then with the kids when at home so I'm ok with paying extra for all of this being bundled and pre-installed.

Yeah it might go poof but I can break even quickly by killing directv. If that happens wouldn't Genesis dissappear too?

Thanks again for the feedback!

Agreed if it only last for 2 months I will break even on my Directv. Plus I get the chance to tell Dtv to gfts. That is worth $350.

Yes, it absolutely could. Another would likely replace it, though, and I could make that change on my FireTV. Not sure how easy/hard it would be for StreamSmart. But, I also use my FireTV for lots of other stuff, too, so having Kodi/Genesis is just a nice bonus for me, at no additional cost. I understand where you are coming from, and don't take this the wrong way, but clearly they've identified a market that people are willing to pay extra for. I'm pretty technical, so it just makes way less sense for me.

Everybody has their own opinion. But, I find that Roku has the biggest selection of streaming stations and a pretty fast interface. I use a Roku on my TV. My wife has a LG Smart TV. My Roku works far better than the TV. Plus, I like the Roku 3's ear plug jack. I use it all the time. My wife can read, and I can watch a war movie. Not every streaming device is going to let you do that.

Does the sound lack at all using the ear plug?

Well, that all depends. The Roku will only drive a pair of ear buds. So, if you've got good ear buds the sound is pretty good. However, it will not drive ear phones. So, I bought a small ear phone amp and then you can use ear phones. Best you can afford. One caution: When the ear buds are plugged in they are always hot. That will kill the batteries very quickly. You need to take the ear bud plug out when not in use, even to go fix a drink or pee. And never leave them plugged in. I love my Roku 3.

Understand where you are coming from bro and no offense taken. I'm fairly technical too just lazy these days with my limited free time. :)

I just got my box yesterday afternoon. Installed it at 1 am last night so I didn't mess with it too much before I went to bed. What are the best apps to download and what are the best sites to stream movies, live television, live sports etc?

I didn't get the smartstream. I got a different brand. The installation was a breeze. For Movies I know one of the best apps is ShowBox. I've used it for a long time. You can't download it on google play store though. So you have to go to their official site. It's completely free
