This Waste Management fiasco is something. Jackson was literally 12 hours away from not having a trash pickup for the city of Jackson.
Outside looking in- that part of the state seems to be operating on the edge of becoming what I think of when I think about an anchor city in a developing country.
It isnt any single thing, its just a bunch of continuous small things. Granted, not much is posted on here that ever highlights the good stuff.

That council needs to kick waste management to the curb. $35 a week is criminal. Either open it up to competition like I had in Louisiana, or have the city run it like I do in Montgomery. Government mandated monopoly is ridiculous.
Jackson is a joke. Everything around Jackson is blowing up ( by that I mean growing)while the city implodes. Crime thru the roof, no businesses, no jobs, no tax base and the infrastructure is all old and decrepit with no real solution to improve any of it. It wouldn't matter if it wasnt the damn capital city of this state. Sadly it is tho
With all due respect...you have no idea how bad it is. When I was still working I had to go to a number parts of the city over a period of time. Unless you go see it with your own eyes, you cannot believe the catastrophic deterioration and blight. It is a very very sad situation and the citizens continue to vote for the same crooked politicians over and over.
So true. Living in Madison, of course all of the local tv stations are in Jackson. It has gotten so sad and pitiful there that I usually cannot bring myself to watch the local news on those channels. And yes, it seems like State government would start at least providing more infrastructure assistance and neighborhood rebuilding. As it is now, almost the entire city is a huge eyesore.
I’m curious what percentage of your life after the age of 18 you have actually spent in MS.
Other than the Mississippi Civil Rights, Historical, Agriculture, Natural Science and Old Capital museums there is nothing good about Jackson. There is no Movie theaters, the only Mall is a shooting zone, water pipes are bad leaving families without water for days at a time. All the roads and I mean every single street, hwy, interstate needs work. I have not seen numbers but Jackson has to have one of the highest crime and murder rates in the state possibly the four state area. Jackson is lost and they keep voting for the same people to run every four years. I believe the current mayor wants to get things right but I don't believe he has support of the city council, money or the know how.
Jackson also has some good places to eat, a nice distillery, and I love a good show at Duling Hall.
That said, I had to tell my mother who was dissatisfied with the hotel I recommended the previous time she and my stepfather were in town to *not* stay at one of the places near the Fairgrounds that she was thinking about earlier this week.
They went to the Fairview instead.

Really fighting the urge to say what I feel about this. So I won't ( even though I kind of did ).
But I would say every penny spent eould be wasted. I work in Canton now and have worked in Jackson in the past. Worked right at Battlefield Park for a year. I can not see a solution short of bulldozing it

Jackson is a Sh** hole and it isn’t coming back. It’s sad, and it is pretty much one thing. Everybody knows why, but won’t say it.

$35 a week for garbage pickup? Mine's $20 a month, and done by the county, and I thought that was a lot for once a week pickup. Trash (grass clipping bags, limbs, etc) is another charge, I think about $15/month, run by the city.
I live on a cul-de-sac and today my neighbor was having a sprinkler system installed. Their truck and trailer made turning in the cul-de-sac impossible, and it was also garbage pickup day. I didn't think we'd get a pickup because the carts were inaccessible, but the driver (it's a one man job now) got out of his truck and rolled about 5 of the houses' carts to the truck so the lift could pick them up and dump them. Kudos to that driver - never dreamed they would do that.
The state capital needs to be moved out of Jackson and the city needs to be left to its own devices. It's beyond help now. It's a drag on the rest of the state because it's the Capitol.
They won't do it here, period. If you don't put it exactly where it should be....

Here in Montgomery we get 2X a week garbage, one time a week yard debris, and we can take anything to the schools two Saturdays a month and it's gone. I don't know what it costs because garbage, sewer, and water are on one bill but the total bill is about $80 bucks a month.

Why are you curious? I lead that post with acknowledging its an outside perspective based on whats posted here as well as what I see on national news(no water for weeks after last winter's freeze, for example).

This thread got me googling statistics. According to google, Mississippi is the most dangerous state in the country. Houston, MS has the highest crime rate. And Brookhaven has the highest homicide rate at 57.7 homicides per 100,000 people.
I don’t know why any of that is important to the OP’s topic and I really don’t know why I’m posting it other than it made me go down a statistical spiral that I will continue to do so after I hit post.

Brookhaven? Was that 2017 data by chance?
There were 8 killed in Bogue Chitto and Brookhaven by that one guy in May of that year.

When I got to state in 1996 I knew nothing about Mississippi other than Starkville. People told me Jackson had a higher murder rate than Detroit back then.
