I tend to lean a little more old school with a lot of the unwritten rules and I'm not yet 40. But this one boggles my mind. I had no idea these things could get so specific. After the 6th inning if up by 3 runs?

I disagree with Jomboy's use of the dumb term "toxic masculinity" but he has good points throughout this breakdown. Good to see Johnny Bench and others have Tatis' back at the end. It's not like he bunted or was overly aggressive on the base paths. He just took a hack at a pitch...the most basic part of baseball. How is that wrong?

What say the pack?

Yeah, it’s garbage. If Texas did not want San Diego hitting anything then they should have just quit the game. It’s not like the game was completely out of hand. Unlikely that Texas comes back but if Texas was still going to try and score, I have no problem with San Diego still playing.

Never heard of this one. Gotta be a MLB thing.

Not stealing when you're up big, totally get it, and teach it to my teams. Not swinging on 3-0 when the bases are loaded and you're up big? Can't say I've heard that one. Particularly never heard anything like up 6 after 6. How many times have we seen a lead like that evaporate in college ball. Heck, it even happens regularly in the KBO.

I’ve never heard of it either. If you’re going to throw me meat on a 3-0 pitch, I’m swinging.

Suggesting a batter shouldn't swing hard at any point is silly, plus the game wasn't out of hand. I suspect it's got a lot to do with Tatis Jr being flashy in general. It's not like he stole a base in the 9th inning while up 6, which would be pretty bush league.

Baseball has got to crack down on the retaliatory beanings. A player could literally get killed from that.

Throw at a player in a such a situation, automatic 1 year suspension. That would take care of it pretty quickly.

Hell every player on a football field could get killed on any play. Take that somewhere else Nancy.

I haven't looked it up the stats but a few years ago when beanings were getting out of hand, even before the bat flips did, it was predominantly in the AL because pitchers didn't bat. Unpopular take here, abolish the DH.

There are multiple games in the history of MLB where teams overcame a 7 run deficit in the 9th. Besides, with baseball needing eyeballs watching I’m sure fans at home would rather see a GS than a walked run.

Yea, that seems really stupid. The game is still being played. If the intend to walk him, they can walk him with the 4th pitch. If they intend to get him out, then he needs to keep trying to hit the ball. If the game is so far out of hand that you don't want your players trying to hit the ball, you need to put in scrubs and give them a chance to get better.

This is one of those spots where old baseball isnt keeping up with the "let them have fun" group like MLB showed in its commercial with Griffey. Its stupid. If the pitcher is going to throw a fastball down the pipe, he has to live with the consequences. Its not Tatis' problem it got to 3-0....

Besides that, Tatis is making 550k as one of the top young hitters in baseball. He lost over half of this year and is arbitration eligible after next year. That dude needs to be PILING UP his individual stats for leverage.

He shouldnt have apologized

As a long time Rangers fan this is embarrassing. A decade ago with Hamilton, Cruz, Beltre, Young, Kinsler, Moreland, and Napoli in the lineup and Ron Washington in the tunnel working a heater or bumping a line... They come back and whoop that *** if you pissed em off.

Now we get this weak ****. This may be the straw that breaks the camel's back. I don't mind rooting for a losing team, but I can't handle whining *** bitches.

He shouldn't apologize for anything. Can't remember if it was Bobby Bowden or Steve Spurrier who said after someone complained about running up the score, it's not my job to stop us from scoring.

I'm somewhat familiar with "old-school" baseball and its rules, since I grew up playing baseball in the 70s and 80s.

In my opinion, regardless of the inning or score, there is no rule ("old-school" or otherwise) that says a batter MUST take a pitch on a 3-0 count. Similarly, there's no rule that says a batter CANNOT hit a home run.

However, the following is definitely an "old-school" rule: if you (or, your team) do something to anger the opposing team, then you (or, one of your teammates) will get thrown at.

The next batter is familiar with that rule, because he was expecting to get thrown at and didn't make a big deal of it.

If your team is up by 10-3 in the eighth inning, then you have every right to pour it on. In other words, your team has no obligation to "take it easy" on the opposing team. If the opposing team doesn't like it, then they can choose to throw at the next batter . . . just like they did . . . just as expected by the next hitter.

I don't know who this "Jomboy" is, but he sounds like someone who hasn't played much baseball.

Typically, the next batter doesn't even get hit with the "retaliatory" pitch, as demonstrated in this instance.

Or . . . have I missed some recent retaliatory beanings in MLB?

The only unwritten rule that is bean worthy is trying to break up a no hitter with a bunt after the 7th inning when there is a big lead.

Because your team stinks so much they got down 6 runs and your pitcher is so bad that he can't throw a competitive pitch for a strike, I am supposed to stand by and let him throw a lolipop for strike one. When I don't, the other team's pride is so injured that they are justified in attempting to physically injure one of my players. Got it.

Oh, and the hitter that dared swing at a 3-0 pitch has to APOLOGIZE for swinging at a pitched ball in a MAJOR LEAGUE baseball game! Ridiculous.

I'm a fan of the way baseball polices itself... but this one was a little much. I read a book a few years ago about the unwritten rules of baseball and i had no idea how in depth those things are. I played ball and knew a lot of them, but in the big leagues they get their panties in a wad over the dumbest stuff.

If you don't want someone to take you yard, throw a better pitch.

With the exception of the Astros... they are fair game for a few years.

Except for game 6 and 7 of the World Series!

Sorry the cardinal fan in me couldn’t resist... that was probably one of the better teams in recent history to not win a World Series. Lots of talent on that team.

Of all the horrible things that happened in game 6... Having to listen to the 2 biggest Cardinals douche nozzles ever call the game was the worst.

I'm not a Rangers fan but I gotta defend them here. Everyone crying hasn't been a member of the Rangers organization from what I've seen. It's mostly just clout chasers that weren't even playing in the game trying to make a story outta nothing.

If you can hit a grand slam, then hit one. No matter the score. This is professional baseball. The pitcher can afford a counselor if it's got him in his feelings so bad.
