I purchased a set of Wahl Clippers, you know the big kind with all the color coded attachments. At the time, I had just moved into my first house and money was very tight. I thought, cool, I'll spend 20 bucks, and cut my hair myself for awhile, and this will sort of get me through.

Well, I just cut my hair again today, and it dawns on me, I wonder how much I have saved in haircuts over the years.. lol

(yep, same set of clippers)

Anyone else do something super cheap like that, that ended up sticking?

I haven't paid for a haircut in over 20 years, always do it myself. And FWIW, Wahl clippers are the tits. They last forever.

I bought a pickup on Craigslist reasonably about 10 years ago the front grill tabs were busted so I got 4 heavy duty zip ties for about $3 I zip tied it down there still on it today sure beat buying a new grill and you really can’t see the zip ties give me time and I’ll think of some more things

That's an awesome one, considering what it would have probably cost to get a replacement..

I used to buy my own dimetapp to make purple drank. Then I figured out you can grip and sip with grape kool-aid mixed with pretty much anything you can find in the neighbors medicine cabinet.

I don't cut my own hair, but I second the endorsement of Wahl clippers. Great product line.

Sure, but the absence of attraction of sex with the opposite sex during that timeframe probably off sets the value of the money saved.

When COVID first came around, I was forced to dig out the Wahl pet grooming clippers that were buried under the sink. It's so easy and convenient, I'm done having to go anywhere for haircuts. Pretty sure the pet version is the same as the human version, just a different color.

I used to fix everything that needed repair on our vehicles except I paid to have a transmission rebuilt once because I know my limitations and I didn't put tires on rims since I didn't have a tire machine. Unfortunately, due to cars nowadays needing special diagnostic machines I sometimes have to punt and take the vehicles in. My wife's Volvo SUV wouldn't start once. It turned over, just didn't start. The fuses were good, the injectors were good, the fuel pump was OK, battery good, alternator putting out 14.4V, the coil tested, etc.. But there was no spark at the plugs. I couldn't figure it out and get it started and she said, "Why can't you fix it? You can fix anything." I took it to a Volvo tech, he said turn it over and immediately told me it was one of the emission sensors. He could tell by a certain kind of click that sensor was bad. I told the wife how the hell was I supposed to know that? Turns out the Swedes are so committed to stopping "climate change", if there is any possibility the motor is leaking one part per million of carbon, the computer shuts down the motor forcing you to fix the emission system.

So anyway, I have been taking my cars in more now than I would like.

I bought a bench grinder a few years ago to sharpen my mower blade and various garden tools. That thing paid for itself in a hurry.

I ran my home lawn mower for about 16 years and never sharpened the blade on it.. I wonder if it mattered or not?
Nothing really wrong with mowing with a dull blade, but I find it's more work. And it's much easier to keep the blade sharp if you don't have to drop it off at a hardware store.

I had a lawnmower I inherited from my dad when he passed so the thing was alrdy old. While mowing one night, The metal had cracked near right rear wheel. So the wheel and height adjustment piece kept moving, digging into the ground. Just wanting to finish the yard that night (before buying a new one) I grabbed an elastic bungee cord and hooked it across the 2 rear wheel height adjustments to hold the wheel in place. Held out the rest of the night AND for the next five years!! Only had to tie a knot in the elastic once a summer to keep the wheel in place, making it tighter.

My wife finally surprised me with a new one this summer. I still can't part with the old one though.

I did the same thing. Bought my Wahl in 2002. I figured I did 12 haircuts a year for 17 years at a cost of $15. I subtracted out $50 for the initial purchase price and I figured I saved $3,010.00. It still works great and I have never sharpened it. I dropped it a couple of times over the years and busted the trimmer off of it and lost some of the hair guards so I decided to buy a new cordless cutter&kit for $70 last year. I love it. It won't last like the old one but the cord was kind of a pain for a DIY cut. My old one serves as a backup in case I ever need it.

Been there done that too with calf. Easy pulls though otherwise my wrists would look worse than calves hooves!!

I cut my own hair with Wahl clippers in college. My wife asked me to get a real haircut for my wedding, which I did. She said she couldn't tell the difference, so that was the last time anyone else cut my hair. That was 26 years ago.

I have bought a couple new clippers since then though. About 1 every 10 years.

impressed by this, I always feel like a cartoon character with my feet braced against the cow pulling as hard as I can to get the calf out with chain and handles, think twine would fillet my hand!

Money or time. Neither one you can bring to the other side.

I have blonde hair and if I cut it, every mistake would be glaring. I guess if I buzzed it, it would be easy. But I still put product in my hair and I really enjoy helping out my hair lady, and making sure she can feed herself and others.

she does a good job, I think

Depends on how big the calf is and how big the cow's pelvis is. I've pulled some that took a 2 ton calf jack and even then I bent the rod on it. I pulled a 125 pounder out of a 1600 lb shorthorn cow of mine this spring. No way you were using twine on that one. I pulled a foal, that's right a foal, for a neighbor that had to have weighed near 200lbs. All that was out was just the front hooves and you could see the nose and it was stuck. I told the neighbor he really needed to go have a C section done but we figured the foal and mare would be dead by the time he got her to Sioux City so away we went. Damn. That was amazing. The mare never went down. Bent that puller bar too. The mare lived but she was incontinent after that. He still used her to pull wagons. Fjord horse.

I love YouTube. You can learn to fix so many things watching videos. I fixed our Whirlpool Front Loading Washer so many times I actually got pretty fast tearing it apart. (Junk. Wife had to have it. Finally talked her into buying a top loading washer again. Bought a Speed Queen. Love it). Replaced the motor on our Dyson Vacuum Cleaner. Had to buy a bracket and the new motor. Cost me about $50 I think. The repair shop in town wanted $160. My wife likes cherries. Nothing better than local Rainier cherries. She has a bad habit of not cleaning out the bowl that she has placed the pits in before placing it in the dishwasher. Our super quiet Kitchen Aid Dishwasher was no longer super quiet. Watched a video and then tore it apart. Cleared out about a cup of cherry pits. It is good as new. I have a Honda single stage snowblower that I love. I can zoom in and out of places much faster than my neighbors with their bigger 2 stage throwers. I change out the rubbers on paddles and the scraper on the bottom. The thing that really saves me money is I wax and sharpen the edges on my skis. Only ski on a pair twice before waxing and sharpening them again. The best local ski shop wants $60 to do it. I probably have $120 into tools and I have to buy wax every once in awhile, but I figure I‘m way ahead. Finally have been cutting my (no) hair for a very long time. Had Wahl clippers forever. Bought cool Philips clippers a few years ago. It is rechargeable , light, faster and cuts closer than my old Wahl clippers.

Wahl clipper man, too. In fact, I just did the whole head with it an hour ago.

I also have a cast iron skillet that I've had forever and will have forever.

My personal favorite is a clock radio that has been my alarm every morning since 1993.
