I think it becomes a little more life threatening as you get older

The biggest concern I recall at 20, besides possibly infecting the guys in my unit (was in the army at the time) was the possibility of becoming sterile. I have 2 kids, so all's well with that. I'm over 50 now, so I guess the shingles vaccine would be a wise choice. I watched my mom deal with shingles when I was a kid. Not something I want to go through... at all.

Wow, I was a medic in the Air Force and we were really strict with immunization records. I’m surprised you were not given a chicken pox vaccine before or during boot camp.

I had them during mid-term exams when I was a Rutgers student in ‘85 (it’s rare to get them that young). They caused me to miss an economics mid-term. I had called ahead that I was sick but didn’t know it was shingles uNtil the next day. They were terrible because I had a rash entirely around my body on my chest and back. I was running a high fever but had to sit up the entire time because of the pain. It’s terrible to sit up when all you want to do is sleep.
They went away fairly quickly and when I returned to the class of the missed exam, I walked up to the professor with my doctors’s note just before class started and he read it and gleefully announced out loud that I had “herpes”. Shingles is a form of herpes called “herpes zoster” but not the same as the STD. What a jackass that guy was.

I'm about the farthest away for being a Physician as possible, but my MD has told me it IS possible to get Shingles if you've had Chicken Pox. I had Chicken Pox as a kid and got the two phase shot a few months ago. The shots were not so available for first or second shot. A little sore/tired afterwards but that's the only side effects I experienced.

this is what I understand as well...you can still get shingles Even if you’ve had chicken pox.

So ‘85, Econ professor, was it Dr Sato from the class “”economics of Japan”?
If so I had him in ‘94, not a fan of his work.

My wife and I both got it when we went to visit her family in the Philippines. The hygiene in her village is not the best. She got it first, and it was painful for her, and I got it a few days later, and it didn't seem to be as bad. It went away after 10 days or so. In my case, I don't remember taking anything for it.

Prompt treatment with prescription antiviral drugs can speed healing and reduce your risk of complications. If you are having pain issues, here's a few things to help:
  • Capsaicin topical patch (Qutenza)
  • Anticonvulsants, such as gabapentin (Neurontin)
  • Tricyclic antidepressants, such as amitriptyline
  • Numbing agents, such as lidocaine, delivered via a cream, gel, spray or skin patch
  • Medications that contain narcotics, such as codeine
  • An injection including corticosteroids and local anesthetics
I got it last year and caught it very early on..I knew I had it before the rashes even surfaced. Took Valtrex and fortunately had a relatively mild case. Best of luck and I hope it gets better soon.

Same here. I had gotten the vaccine about 15 years ago, as I never got chicken pox as a kid and then I got chicken pox at 45 (but only a mild case). Then 2 years ago I noticed a very small reddish area on my jawline and knowing how bad shingles is (my mom got it twice), went in and saw my dermatologist within an hour (she's great fitting in emergency appts) and she prescribed Valtrex and, like you said, catching it early is key and it never really got any worse than that. Was very lucky. Need to get the vaccine and it pains me to say it, but the Glaxo one is better than the Merck one by a decent margin.

Get the shots Dave. Do it ASAP, it’s important

I always get whatever is offered. The odds are incredibly in the person's favor of nothing happening but immunization to nasty stuff. So why beg off? (Oh, and if you're an anti-vaxxer, please don't reply to this post why all this stuff is bad. Thanks in advance.)

By the way, one of my friends and dorm mates in my Rutgers freshman year at Pell Dorm (no, not Pell's Hell) is now a pharmacist in Long Branch. His suggestion these days (besides shots for shingles, pneumonia, etc.) is for whooping cough. Says the elderly are very suseptible and its quite excruciating. All that avoided with an immunization shot. Find the time... do it or have your loved ones do it.)

There, that screed wasn't so bad, was it? Be well.

I went through boot camp in '85. I don't think the chicken pox vaccine was developed until sometime in the 90s.

If you have never had chickenpox as a child, you should get the vaccine, getting chicken pox as as an adult (adult varicella)can be life threatening and very painful with multiple complications. You can get varicella titers taken by your doc as a blood test to see if you were exposed.

If you had the chicken pox as a kid and are over 50, it is highly recommended to get the new 2 shot Shingrex vaccine ($280), if insurance does not pay. It is 97% effective in preventing shingles.
The old Zostavax shingles vaccine was only 50% effective and not recommended anymore. The new vaccine can cause pain, sometimes severe, in the arm but nothing like the pain of shingles.

If you get shingles along the face , you have to see an eye doctor because it can result in permanent blindness.

If you get shingles, you should try to start treatment w/in 72 hrs of the rash for best results: But even tx if after 72 hrs

Valacyclovir: 1000 mg three times daily for seven days\
OR
Famciclovir: 500 mg three times daily for seven days
calamine lotion for the itchy rash

I’m in my mid 40’s and had a nasty itch so I went to see my doctor, turned out to be Shingles. Totally sucks, I’m doing 4 baths a day and packing ice and lidocaine on the area. Anyone have suggestions that may help with the healing, it’s my lower back and makes it near impossible to sit.
Apparently the immunization is not given until after 50 and is not covered by insurance, awesome stuff. I take a crap load of pills that my wife is managing, but honestly she could hand me cyanide and I would take it without question.

Any Suggestions for products that help with the skin healing would be much appreciated.
I got it as a 27 year old, it’s painful. After a week or so of meds it disappeared

I had chicken pox as a kid than shingles in my early 30's. Doc said it could be from anxiety or stress . Asked me if I was stressed, I said, " I don't know, I just started up my own business a year ago and now we're in a full blown recession, what do you think?

My reoccurrence was brought on by being overworked(fatigue) and stress, My case wasn't so severe as I was younger and only lasted about a week or so. The entire right side of my upper torso hurt like a ***** though.

Same here; got it in my thirties, it did not last long and had it in the same location.

I actually don't recall if I had CP as a kid and no one left to ask...Which vaccine was it as a kid we got in school that left the small round scar on the arm? Was that for CP?

So i just looked it up

If you've never had chickenpox, you will NOT get shingles

Only those who have had chickenpox can get shingles

That wasn't a vaccine, that was a test. The TB test, in fact.

You are correct, however, that the scar was from the smallpox vaccine, which was discontinued as part of the routine vax schedule in 1972 - hence the old adage:

"How do you spot a cougar at the bar? Look for the vaccine that left a scar!"

I think I got the vaccine in 4th or 5th grade, maybe earlier- which would have been before 72...I remember the TB test as well too. What I hated more than anything were those damn hearing tests lol

Thank you, I’m doing most of these but have a few things to look into, not familar with the topical patch

Capsaicin is the active ingredient which gives peppers their heat. If you want to try an experiment, I make home made hot sauces with some of the hottest peppers in the world. C'mon over and slather some on the affected areas. We can even douse some on tacos to help treat from the inside of the body while washing it down with a few pints of suds.

Unless the supply has improved recently, the Shingrix vaccine can be pretty hard to find. Because of the shortage, my primary care doctor would not put me on his waiting list for the second shot until I was able to get the first one. He recommended asking the pharmacist at Target if they had the vaccine in stock each time I was in the store, and after a few months of trying I was able to get it there (Aetna covered it 100%).

The vaccine will make your arm really tender at the injection site, and mild side effects are fairly common - I felt slightly under the weather the next day - but serious side effects are very rare. It's well worth a little discomfort if it means not getting shingles.

Its the other way around

"Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus — the same virus that causes chickenpox. After you've had chickenpox, the virus lies inactive in nerve tissue near your spinal cord and brain. Years later, the virus may reactivate as shingles."

https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/shingles/symptoms-causes/syc-20353054

Huh! Guess that stuff about having chicken pox and being safe from shingles was an old wives tale. Never had chicken pox but will check my pharmacy again about whether just the one shot against shingles was sufficient.

The vaccine is in short supply and I don't think most doctor's offices keep it in stock, or if they get it, it will be in small quantities. My doctor who is part of a very large group does not have it. As someone else wrote, the big pharmacies have it in stock intermittently and they advertise that they will administer it. My insurance would not cover a pharmacist administered vaccine as it was not covered as a medication, so Rite-Aid was a no go. However, I got myself on the waiting list at a CVS Minute Clinic. They called me a month or two later and as it was a visit with a clinician, both doses were covered in full. I don't even think I had a co-pay.

Everyone should do all they can do avoid it, and the only thing you can do is to get vaccinated. It really did make my arm sore and I felt like a had a viral syndrome for a few days, but that is a small price to pay to avoid the disaster that shingles can be.

Everyone should read this post. Same thing happened to me. Felt a little skin pain on side of body, btw that is where is mostly comes out. But it can come out on your scalp and face. Went right to the doctors and they gave me medicine that stopped it from blistering. Saved me from a lot of pain. They don't guarantee it will prevent it from blistering but it did work for me. Six months later i got the vaccine.

I had the pox as a child and shingles in my early forties. I got it in my wrist and arm. Most painful thing I have ever experienced ! I could not turn a door knob. I wanted to take off my arm at the shoulder and would not have missed it !
