Lost a perfect game with 2 outs in the ninth because the batter leaned in to get hit by a pitch. Ball was inside but but the guy dropped his elbow down to get hit. Still saved the no-no.

Oh, please. The pitch was way inside. Tough luck. Next time throw it over the plate, Max.

The pitch was well inside, the batter did not "lean into" the pitch. He kept his elbow out and that is where the ball hit him. It's extremely difficult to pitch a perfect game, he got a no hitter....he should be happy.

He didn't just leave his elbow out, he dropped down right into the ball. Was it inside - yes, but batters who want to hit the ball like a man move out of the way. chump move.

I believe the ump has the right to just call the pitch a ball, with no first base awarded, if a batter makes no effort to avoid the pitch.....don drysdale was either going for a perfect game, or an extended scoreless streak, and got such a ruling to keep his streak alive

The batter without a doubt leaned into that pitch . The umpire is put in a very tough spot there but has to make that call.

Just rewatched in a couple times. Was not "way inside". Tabata clearly leaned into it. That's a real chump move.

Don't think he leaned into it. It was an inside pitch that hit him. Even Scherzer said Tabata did nothing wrong.

Sucks for Scherzer, but I'm sure he'll get more chances. Best pitcher in baseball.

*Hottest pitcher in baseball. Not the best. Kershaw is and has been the best for a while.

Scherzer is #1 in the MLB in ERA, WHIP (by far) and strikeouts, and tied for 2nd in WAR. Kershaw is 34th, tied for 17th, 2nd, and tied for 58th in those respective categories.

Kershaw has led the league in ERA and WHIP 4 years in a row and has 3 Cy Youngs and a 2nd place finish. Scherzer may very well end up with better numbers this year, but I'm gonna need more than stats through June 20 to convince me that someone has passed him.

WAR is the dumbest stat in sports and completely meaningless. But the real stats that you cite prove your point.

If that wasn't leaning in, what is?

If you actually watch the pitch, it's clearly tailing inside too much. It's tough to blame Tabata for it even though I was initially pissed that a perfect game was ruined by a close call.

Is this something that can be fixed after the fact, like correcting a error/hit call?
--------------
I doubt that anything can be done at this point, he faced 28 players.......I blame the home plate ump for not just calling it a ball, if it were that
blatant ....have not seen a replay of it.

there is one instance, in the far distant past, where a player was credited with a perfect game, but it was not......a starting pitcher walked the first batter, or gave up a hit, not sure, and was taken out immediately...the replacement retired the next 27 batters.....for some reason when perfect games are talked or written about, this game comes up as being a perfect game......

If I was tabata I wouldn't be crowding the plate today. My money is on him getting knocked down.
