If anything we need about 3 less colleges in the state. The states education money is spread way too thin and needs to find its way to teachers and not administrators.

And no, my wife is not a teacher and neither am I.

Why are Iowans so sensitive about their soil?

^This right here^

I have no idea.

I figure the CA central valley and Illinois are consistently the highest producing. I hear about Iowa soil in many counties being 'the best' too. And the Delta as being 'the best'.
Its an interesting topic because like so much in sports, it isnt provable and there are many different ways to support your view. This is especially true since soil is but one part of successful growing conditions(water, weather, temps, etc) and so having 'the best' soil doesnt mean a ton.

Anyways, I like hearing locals talk soil and their reasoning. Im a nerd.

Perhaps the state needs one or two selective universities (like MSU and OM), forget the "get in with an ACT of 15" nonsense, and let the other state schools educate the masses. Other states have major universities that are quite selective (e.g., Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, Michigan) and Mississippi could do the same. Ratings do matter.

Every state you mentioned has almost triple the population of Mississippi or more.

North Carolina - 10.5 Million
Florida - 21.5 Million
Virginia - 8.5 Million
Michigan - 10 Million
Mississippi - 3 Million

The issue isn't so much quality as quantity. I don't think Mississippi has the population to support significantly higher restrictions unless you plan on significantly reducing the attendance levels.

“MS has very few 26+ ACT scores”

Simply not true. I have three kids in my house and the lowest ACT in the bunch is a 26 (ninth grader). To make this matter worse both of their parents have lowly degrees from USM (I know.....gasp). I guess they just rose above their horrible upbringing?

The real key is that both of the kids parents have degrees from somewhere. Parental involvement and encouragement is highly influential to a kid's success in school. It's not necessary, but sure does help.

Curious what you would say is the top 3 or 4 most fertile regions in the US.
I always like to hear why someone views their soil as the best.

I would put the Midwest as the top. That organic rich mollisol soil is hard to beat. Mississippi Delta is my second. I couldn’t say with certainty a 3 or 4. Northern California is very diverse in its production of so many commodities. Really after that though, it gets to areas with more specific production like South Georgia peanuts.

There will always be Ayers. The HBCU funding settlement decreased two years ago & is scheduled to end in 2022 though.
