Used to live in Los Angeles area (Redondo Beach) for awhile (5 years), but that was back in the late 70s/early 80s. Taking a weeklong trip to San Diego in April, wondering what's worth seeing there. Just the wife and I, both now in early 60s. Actually flying in, renting a car, and staying up in Rincon. So far likely to visit Old Towne, maybe a restaurant in La Jolla, the Zoo, and a brewery (no real interest in Sea World). Wife has also been checking Diners, Drive-ins and Dives places to maybe visit, and looking into the City Pass.

Just checking to see if anyone else might have any info on great places that they have visited in that area.

Isn't the zoo in Balboa Park? Midway - good suggestion, forgot about that (any different than the Intrepid here?)

Take a drive to Escondido and visit the Safari Park. Then make your way over to the Stone Brewery which is only 15 minutes away. If you are into wine tastings, make the hour drive to Temecula. You can also find great seats at very reasonable prices for Padres games on Stub Hub.

And check out Richard Walker's Pancake House for breakfast.

Wine tastings sound good! Will check into wineries there - when in Vegas, we visited the only winery around there (in Pahrump). Safari park a good possibility as well, but wife has zero interest in baseball.. lol

I would second the Midway. We spent at least four hours on it several years ago when we went out for the Fresno State game. Enjoyed it immensely.

If you are in the La Jolla area take a drive up to Mt. Soledad. It is a veterans memorial (Huge cross). With a great view of La Jolla and the ocean.

Good breweries and beer.

Gaslamp would be nice to walk around...but since you're with your wife, maybe moreso during the day.

There's the beach at Coronado but not many locals will be around in April. Too chilly for them!

If you drive a little north of San Diego (towards LA) on Route 5, you will see a sign for John Basilone Road. This is right about where Camp Pendleton is and honors, of course, the Medal of Honor winner from Raritan, NJ.

Also take a ride over to Coronado Island, and take in the Coronado Hotel.

2nd to the Gas Lamp District. Coronado Island. Also Old Town if you like Mexican Food and Heritage/Shopping. As for the wine tasting Temecula Valley. VERY good. Wineries all along the left and right side of the highway.

Haven't been to SD in about 10-12 years and was just talking to the wife about going back.

We do like Mexican food and wineries..... May even take in a ghost tour of that "most haunted house"....

If you're into beer, take a brewery tour. Also visit a great beer bar on the edge of the Gaslamp called Neighborhood.
If you're planning on going to La Jolla, go to the La Jolla Public House where they have an extensive selection of beer. The house was built in the very early 20th century and I believe is designated as a historical landmark.
