Probably will because we have told them when and where we are coming. Just like we told them when we were leaving. I just do not get any of that.

Awful, just terrible and so stupid and avoidable. The people running our country right now are complete dumbasses.

It's been a sad day in Afghanistan for 20 years. Get our troops out of there as fast as possible and let ISIS-K and the Taliban battle it out. The longer we stay, the more attacks will come.

You left out the part about getting our citizens the 17 out of there before lighting the fuse. I find that somewhat important. Maybe I'm alone.

First US Troops killed in Afghanistan in a long time. We had that country about as stable as could be until the announced deadline.Horrible execution of exit “strategy”. All the President had to do, was remove US citizens first, then Afghanistan citizens/interpreters who were allies next, then remove soldiers and equipment and destroy anything else that would be of military value to the Taliban.

I don't think there is any doubt the Afghan Army collapsed far faster than the military expected it to. I don't blame them for not wanting to die for a doomed country though.

We had 20 years to figure this all out. Whatever we did, failed. Biden wasn’t the first that wanted to leave, Trump was going to do it last year but didn’t. We are now seeing why the last two presidents didn’t with all this scrutiny.

Should this have been handled better? Absolutely, 100%, Sure. We should have left under Obama after Osama Bin Laden was killed. No point in being there after we kicked out Al-Qeada, got most of the 9/11 perps. Afghanistan needs to sort its own problems or declare themselves a territory of the U.S.A. The culture over there has little pride for a self sustaining government and the people in power are so corrupt, there is no trust building or faith. It was all a transactional relationship in a lot of areas of that country. Still happening today, as we speak.

Biden made a bold move leaving, he said he was going to in his presidential campaign. If you think the situation as a whole was preventable by the last two presidents. You are living in a dream world or someone is lying to you.

I hate it for our brave men & women & other countries that fought with us. Reality is, we were wasting money daily on a country that has been war torn going past 30 years. I’m glad we are leaving, this whole episode, in my opinion is Obama’s fault(all past serving presidents share this band-Aid too). Obama should have pulled everything out after OBL was terminated. Is what it is

I have no problem calling military, politicians, firemen, police, doctors, clergy, teachers, etc., "dumbasses" if they are dumbasses.

We need to fly about 5 bombers and and a handful of fighter jets and once our last transport has left we should light their asses up and let whoever survives turn out the lights.

Just blows my mind that our politicians (both sides) think they could actually sit down and negotiate and ultimately trust a group that had a hand in flying 3 jetliners into our most recognizable buildings and attempting a 4th. 17ing negotiate?

Just asinine.

Yep. One of my former professors at Southern Miss wrote in the Washington Post about it:

The lesson of Vietnam — and Afghanistan — is that the United States can’t win wars for nations with weak governments battling against internal turmoil and external threats. Absent total war — with zero regard for civilian body counts — victory requires the construction of indigenous militaries that can survive without the United States in service of governments that are worthy of their people’s sacrifice. Whether the United States can parachute in and build such militaries and governments is an open question, but one thing is certain: At the very least, doing so would require U.S. politicians of better understanding and then explaining the need and rationale for an open-ended military effort. After all, how many Americans can offer an explanation for why the United States should have remained in Afghanistan?

Winning battles is both flashy and necessary, but real sustainability and, thus, victory can only come with a deep understanding of indigenous cultures, a thorough and long-term alliance and the building of a stable government that gives its people security and hope — and commands loyalty.

When the United States contemplates launching wars like Vietnam and Afghanistan again in the future, only understanding this reality will allow the United States to avoid repeating the past again.

I am in the minority camp that thinks we should have stayed. We only had 2500 troops there. NATO was there with us. It had become a NATO mission. NATO was paying for it. No US casualties since Feb 2020. The place was stable. Now it's a mess and it will come back to hunt us. I disagreed with Trump on the issue. But I am a Veteran and probably look at things differently.
