No doubt these are some great student athletes, but you are not alone, not many people care about college wrestling. For all the clamor we heard in previous threads of how wrestling is such a big sport in New Jersey only 2,800 people bothered to show up at the Wisconsin meet to support a team that was ranked 12th in the nation at the time. The facts don't lie, only a few die hard fans really care about this sport and if the team drops off a bit it will be back at the College Avenue Gym in front of a couple hundred people on a good night. By the way, this is the current coach's 9th season and all he has produced is two 8th place NCAA finalists and college wrestling isn't about dual meets, it is about how you do at Nationals and under the current regime we have done next to nothing.

Here is an idea, let's move the money from this dying sport to a growing collegiate sport like hockey. Just a thought.

You need to give it a bit of time. Believe me, if you win the fans will show up. Heck, I've tuned in for PSU WVB.

In regards to Hockey, I agree with you that Rutgers would be a great school for Hockey. That being said, would PSU even have an NCAA program if someone didn't donate $100M to build a facility? Doubtful.

RUforlife is embarrassing himself big time with his stupidity
You say so, I am having fun. I have grown tired of these wrestling threads as if anybody cared. They have their own board. I actually went on it, believe it or not, there are no OT football threads. They come here because they know this is where there are Rutgers fans. Everybody is happy for their success, we are all happy for any Rutgers program that has success, but if I wanted to know what they are up to I can go to their board, really pretty simple.

One suggestion. Tune into ESPN for the B1G tourney. They stream all the matches. I prefer watching the B1G and NCAA wrestling tourneys over March Madness...and I'm a lifetime hooper. Maybe it is because PSU is awesome at wrestling and not at basketball but I don't think so. The elite level of B1G wrestlers is just fun to watch.

It's a sport I was never into and never understood, but I went to the Maryland match for the first time and it was awesome, went again to Wisky sad we lost but the atmospheres are 10x better than basketball.

Just asking this dumb question in case I have to leave my job AT THREE or if I got some time until match time but will the gym be packed for the Drexel meet?

"watching" today's match via Twitter. Ashnault won and 157lb Richie Lewis just took down the Michigan All American for the win.

Michigan leads 10-6

Screw - We were Top 6 in attendance nationally, last year and Friday night's match had been rescheduled from 2 weeks ago (the night of the blizzard came in...).

Hold up. How do you assert that college hockey is a growing sport? There are only 59 mens varsity teams at D1, with ASU coming in to make 60. Fully 1/3 of which appear to be single sport D1 schools. The two biggest additions in the last few years; PSU and ASU. PSU is only there because of a HUGE donation to the school specifically designated for a move to D1 hockey. Granted, the top 10 schools in hockey attendance out draw the top 10 schools in wrestling. That being said, the only D1 hockey program in NJ is Princeton with a whopping 1,900 average home attendance. Hardly a motivation to invest the $100+m into hockey to move it up to varsity and replace one Northern, non-revenue, niche sport with another.

Really? I would think B1G wrestling at a traditional powerhouse would fill 20K seats. Maybe the whole sport needs a boost then.

Anyway it's fun for this recent adopter - and I thought with the status of the MBB team maybe some folks would be interested in an alternative.

I think hockey is a growing college sport and has become a little less regionalized than wrestling. BIG hockey has major issues b/c size of conference. Unless they go the lax route and add a hockey only member, they will need more BIG schools to add hockey. RU is in a decent hockey market and NJ produces some good talent, but I don't know how much RU would benefit. Lacrosse and wrestling are two sports where RU has some geographical advantages and they are light years behind in the BIG and nationally. The challenge in hockey would be even greater!

Did you also tire of the women's soccer threads? First and foremost, this is a place for Rutgers fans. The wrestling team and the women's soccer team are the two best teams we have, and its not close. So of course people are going to talk about it. No reason to be upset about it. Celebrate Rutgers.

Also, wrestling attendance may not impress you, but it impresses the AD. With very, very little investment, they have their 4th revenue sport. I am not going to look it up, but I would be amazed if Wrestling isn't the 3rd most attended sport at Rutgers by a large margin.

FYI - Penn State-Ohio St sold out the Jordan Center last Friday, a shade under 16k. PSU and Iowa have had comparable #s in last few years. Iowa -Ok St blew out an outdoor event last year, but the 20k # is absurd, even for the best programs with best match up!

If you go back to the OP you would see that this thread was started to encourage people to attend the wrestling matches. making that comment on the wrestling board would be, well, redundant, which is why it was brought to the busiest board.
