I suppose...if you were a lonely housewife who liked boring middle of the road 80's synth pop.

There must be a lot of lonely housewives that liked them. As of 2001 they had sold 23 million albums. Sure, they might not have been the greatest band of the 70s and 80s, but that first album and Candy-O were pretty solid albums IMO.

Benjamin Orr..heck of a singer!..I feel he made the cars as the singer very one wanted to hear.

Yeah, I think women were pretty sold on Benjamin Orr's looks and voice. He did have a really good voice too. Much better than Rick Ocasek's IMO. But Rick Ocasek had a great odd voice for a New Wave band.

I'm just bustin' his chops in good fun. I love the Cars. However the Benjamin Orr stuff is nobody's favorite.

I didn't get into the Cars until the mid 80s when I was a freshman at UNL. Then I found Pickles records. Got the first three Cars albums. I agree the first two albums were great. I did like Panorama a lot. That first side was delish. Much darker than their early stuff.

Edit: I forgot Dirt Cheap Records.

One of the few bands that never changed members in their entire existence. Only a few others who have done this for over 30 years - ZZ Top and U2 only come to mind...

Good additions. I left those groups off due to them not being together for at least 30 years, but they were definitely all original from beginning to end. Regarding Aerosmith, didn’t Joe Perry leave for an album or two in the early 80s?

I believe you're right. Aerosmith "Rocks" and "Toys in the Attic" are hard to beat. Two great albums!

RIP

I have to say the Cars were one of the worst bands I ever seen in concert..

Speaking of "in concert" and not so good. I was working in Seattle, WA about 6/7 years ago and I was reading a small local paper/rag one Saturday and it said The Cars in concert. Figured it was a cover band at first, but I did know at that time they had released their first album in some 20 years. I showed up at this small bar-like venue in "LODO" and the line was down the street. I immediately grabbed some cash as I figured I would have to do some scalping. I got in line and got in with about 1000 others and it was the Cars. They came out and Rick looked close to death, and the left-handed guitarist was playing way off to the side and that was as close as I could muster. He was awesome as stated and that rift of the Candy-O album was perfect. They started off with an old song and sounded rough, but the next Song was "Let the Good Times Roll? They were half way through the song and Rick said Stop it and called the band to a halt. He was off key and the sound was awful. Rick proceeded to say Sorry to the crowd and that they sucked on that one. Rick said they had not played in decades and they were in Seattle as their first warm-up for the tour that was coming. He then said," Mind if we start from the top again until we get this thing right?" The crowd went F'in nuts. They played the song again and asked if that was better and everyone screamed. They got better with every song and I was honored to witness that and lucky as hell as I grew up with them! By the way, they did not play Drive which really surprised me. I think that may have been Rick's ego playing. They did acknowledge that they missed Ben but it was a shame they did not play Ben's songs as they were the best.

Yeah, he only sang half their songs and those were quite good. And synth pop? Wonder why they always had three guitars and real drum sets when they made their music. Their lead guitarist was a brilliant player, but I digress.
