Interesting connection here... Turns out I'm related to Maz through marriage. Something like 2nd cousin twice removed. But it's cool to be able to say you're related to a HOFer. I have a commemorative plate of the Game 7 HR in my den.

How my Mom won the 1960 World Series.
I've told this story before but I will repeat it in honor of Maz. In 1960 I was not yet in my teens and Maz was my favorite player. My family had Pirate season tickets and when the Bucs made the World Series my Mom said I could miss 2 days of school to go to games (all were day games then). I chose game 2 and the Pirates lost 16-3. The Bucs then went to NY for 3 games and came home with a Series lead of 3 games to 2. My Mom asked if I wanted to go to game 6 or a possible game 7. Of course I chose game 6, a 12-0 Yankee blowout. My Mom went to game 7, but the story does not end there.
My Mom was a heavy smoker, despite all efforts by my Dad and me to get her to stop. Nothing worked. When the Pirates came up in the bottom of the 9th, score tied 9-9, my Mom, a deeply religious person, promised God she would never smoke again if the Pirates won. Bill Mazeroski, my hero, was the leadoff hitter. You know what happened, and my Mom kept her promise to God. She lived 30 more years and never had another cigarette. So.....that is how my Mom, with help from Bill Mazeroski, won the 1960 World Series.

Maz was a hero in the Burgh. I was in six grade at Wightman School and we all watched game 7 on a TV wheeled into the gym. I could not believe that Maz was "only" 89. How could that be. I was in sixth grade and he was 13 years older than me and winning a world series.

do you remember the brands of cigarettes she smoked? When I smoked mine were Luckys, Pall Mall & Camels nonfilter, ended 21 yrs ago.

Interesting question step, and one I had not thought about for many years. I think she smoked Camels, because I recall the image on the pack.

By all accounts, Maz was a humble and down to earth guy.

After the last game of the season, he would have a picnic with his wife in Schenley Park and that's exactly what he did after being the hero of the Series.
