OT: Ridley Park/Philly housing

This board is dead so I figured another OT wouldn't hurt. My nephew is starting a new job at Boeing Helicopter in May and is looking for housing in the area. I know little to nothing about the Philly area as does he so any suggestions would be appreciated. He is trying to keep his commute to less than 30 minutes and monthly rent to under $1,000.

Where specifically is he looking? In Philly, if he's looking to keep his rent to 1K then he really should get a roommate. Without knowing what he's looking for in terms of neighborhood, it's tough to recommend anything. But Queen Village/Bella Vista/Grad Hospital could work on his budget with a roommate. Otherwise, he should go further south to look. That's just in Philly, though - can't help with the suburbs.

The commute from most of philly down to Boeing is all route 95 so not a bad commute. Ridley Park is minutes away but nothing there...not recommended. If he's single there are tons of great neighborhoods in Philly.

A roommate would be needed for better areas but if he doesn't mind gritty he could afford west philly. Another option is to head up from the South...Wilmington DE is cheaper and not that far. But avoid Chester and all the bedroom communities around the Boeing plant are boring.

My daughter who moved to Philly in June was sharing an apt a friend already had in Fairmont but only until the lease was ending. She would have loved to stay there but couldn't afford it by herself. She now has a studio in a slightly less desirable neighborhood which runs a little less than $1,000 utilities included. It took her about 3 months to find it.

Gentrification can be a pain in the old pocketbook.

I'll second this. Lived in QV for a couple of years, now in Society Hill. Queen Village is really a gem of a neighborhood. Safe, walking distance to everything in Center City, a lot of late 20s/early 30s who are super friendly. Plus, there is a covered neighborhood lot that is super cheap (100/month). More and more restaurants are moving in around 4th, and the best pizza in the city is at 6th & Catharine.

If he lives in town he'll get popped an extra 4 plus percent in tAxes. He may be able to try the Villanova / Ardmore area near 476. And be able to get there in 30 minutes. Also, he may still have a social life . A little further up the blue route is conshohocke but pricing and travel time will add up

just saw this post. Several years ago (6) I drove right past the boeing location on my way to work. It is a 30 min drive commute or less from anywhere in the city though I would recommend some of the places named in this thread other than places like manayunk.

If your son doesn't like the city, nearby towns like Media are really nice and have some cool downtown areas.
