Used to play at west 4th late 90's early 2000's. Talent was pretty good but games were way over rated. NYC has some of the worst pick up basketball of any major city I have ever been. You are pretty much forced to enter a league to get a good run.I used to play on the W. 4st court and a lot of good players came thru that gate. This was in the 90's and kid called Detroit was easily the best regular. Beat me one-on-one every time. Only about 6'5" but played taller and very fast. Lots of guys would wonder why he wasn't in the league, but it the reason were obvious to me: No D, no help D, forced plenty of bad shots instead of passing the ball, uncoachable, on the pipe, bad wind, did not play well with other top level players, would get locked in playing at half-speed ... any one of those would explained why he never got the chance to play college ball. Being actually good enough to play D1 requires a rare combination of skills, intellect, desire, discipline. There was an older guy -in his 40's but high mileage and poor maintenance, who used to wear Dr. J Hot Hands (when someone had the bad idea of selling gloves for basketball) who used a jab step, or fending elbow and would score at will over Detroit. Detroit was still much better but the lunch time crowds would go wild over Homeless Hot Hands which would drive Detroit nuts.
