Rise and Fall of the Third Reich by Shirer.. It’s the definitive authority for understanding WTF Germany was thinking.

Hitler: Ascent by Volker Ullrich is really good on the lead up to the war. It gives a lot of insight into the the mindset and personality of each ******* in the Nazi regime, and it’s very thorough on Hitler of course.

Get ready for lots of reading while shaking your head that such evil was so accepted.

Second on Night by Elie Wiesel. And whoever downvoted that either had fat fingers or should be added to some sort of watch list.

Night by Elie Wiesel

I was at the Holocaust museum in DC last week. They had this poem from Wiesel on the wall:

Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, which has turned my life into one long night, seven times cursed and seven times sealed.
Never shall I forget that smoke.
Never shall I forget the little faces of the children, whose bodies I saw turned into wreaths of smoke beneath a silent blue sky.
Never shall I forget those flames which consumed my faith forever.
Never shall I forget that nocturnal silence which deprived me, for all eternity, of the desire to live.
Never shall I forget those moments which murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to dust.
Never shall I forget these things, even if I am condemned to live as long as God Himself. Never.

This one isn't like most of the others mentioned:
The Periodic Table by Primo Levi. It's a memoir from an Italian chemist who ended up in Auschwitz.

Fat thumbed that one. Rise and Fall is great. Berlin Diaries by Shirer is also good. More good books on the Nazis: Adolf Hitler by John Toland and The Last 100 Days also by Toland.

With the Old Breed and Killing the Rising Sun. Great books on the Pacific War.

Came here to say With the Old Breed. I listened to it on Audible and the guy that played Eugene Sledge in "The Pacific" read it. Fantastic book. Helmet For My Pillow was pretty good too, but it was very wordy. You can tell it was written by a journalist.

The scope is a lot larger than WWII, but I'd recommend The Arms of Krupp by William Manchester. Krupp armed the 3rd Reich, and used slave labor at its factories. There are chapters that detail the conditions for the slaves.

I'd also 2nd the recommendations for Rise and Fall of the 3rd Reich. That's the definitive book on the subject.
