'04 Civic showing signs of a blown head gasket. Currently has ~159K miles on it.

Received a $900 quote for a head gasket replacement.
It would cost ~$2600 to replace the engine with one from a salvage yard with 82K miles.

Can anyone recommend a place I can go to for a second opinion?

Would prefer someone in the central NJ area (near Rutgers).

Would be a plus if the shop specialized in Japanese cars like mine.

Thanks in advance!

Trying to squeeze 2-3 more years out of my car. By then, my wife's car will be paid off.

But as the cost to repair reaches 3K, it starts to make more sense to lease something for that time frame.

Jem Automotive Service in Middlesex. They are the best shop I've ever been to in my 40+ years of driving. Very responsive, honest, and knowledgable.

I don't know of a mechanic but what symptoms does your car have?

Heater barely blowing warm air at idle.
Not leaking coolant, but running hotter than previously.
Guy I took it to tried to remedy with a water pump replacement, but it didn't work. Says next logical cause with my type of car/mileage is a head gasket.
I think I remember exactly when it went: tried accelerating and barely moved. Suddenly the thermometer shot up.

Let it cool down and then only ran hot when you turned on the heater. That's when I had the first guy look at it.

I had a car that had a blown head gasket and white 'smoke' which was actually steam would come out of the tailpipe. I hate it when professional mechanics guess what is wrong. My friend had his check engine light go on and he took it to Walko in Bridgewater and they told him it was the engine control module and it would cost $1300 to replace it. Then he took it to the dealer and they said it was charcoal canister and they fixed it plus cleaned the fuel injectors and throttle body for a total of $600.

Reason I don't want to take it to the dealer is because I might eventually be using it as a trade-in on a new car.

Straight Line Auto in Matawan. Only about 25 minute ride from New Brunswick. Don there is the absolute best. Won't beat his prices anywhere.

Head gaskets are easy to diagnose - you get fluid mingling. Even absent the telltale "white smoke" out the exhaust, if you drain the oil and the coolant you'll find traces of coolant in the oil and vice versa.

Blown Head Gasket Symptoms:
  • Coolant leaking externally from bellow the exhaust manifold.
  • White smoke from the exhaust pipe.
  • Overheating engine.
  • Bubbles in the radiator or coolant overflow tank.
  • White milky oil.
  • Significant loss of coolant with no visible leaks

It's not hard to tell if there's coolant in your oil or oil in your coolant. Search YouTube if you don't know what to look for. If either of these issues are present it's probably a bad head gasket. The problem is, a head gasket replacement isn't going to help much if the engine was run so hot that the cylinder head has cracked or warped.

2004 Civic with 159k- they aren't going to check your service records. Clean title and then give you whatever room they had as the trade in.

The first mechanic I visited confirmed the fluid cocktail. Said it wasn't terrible, but it was there and combined with he lack of heat flagged him to a head gasket issue. Apparently fairly common for Civics around 150K.

Been looking through forums and lots of folks were able to do the gasket replacement for 1K without issues. Still debating if a new car is in order at this point.

Well now you're in trouble. There will soon be people flocking to this thread to declare that statement an outright lie. Hondas never break. Ever. lol

Hi Mikedt1,

I had a bad head gasket on my 05 Honda Civic automatic at 90k. Those generation Civics are known for the head gaskets going bad. I did everything possible hoping it wasn't the head gasket- I changed the thermostat myself, changed the water pump, flushed the coolant system, etc. I essentially had to keep my eye on the engine oil temp at all times, and kept a turkey baster with hosing in the car to put the excess coolant from the overflow tank back into the radiator. At the time, all private mechanics I went to didn't want to diagnose it as the head gasket, even though all the forums suggested it was.

I ended up bringing it to Hamilton Honda, and stacked some coupons. At that point, I basically had to bite the bullet... When the dealer finished the work, I had them show me the head gasket. It was pretty worn.

One thing I did try was a treatment called Steel Seal. You can find information on it online, but try it at your own risk. By chemical reaction & heat, it essentially forms a glassy layer. The dealer was skeptical of the product, but when they pulled off the head gasket, they said that it had almost worked and that maybe a second treatment could have remedied the situation. They were pretty shocked.... I thought it was a gimmick worth a shot at the time- but I was reluctant to try it twice hence why I brought it to the dealer. It was my only car at the time, and I didn't want to tinker with it anymore.

I kept that car for another 70k until I sold it to a cousin. I replaced it with a base 2011 VW Golf (manual), which has been a great car for me. I enjoy it much more than the Honda.
