OT: Random Question about the BK Whopper

Note: I've been living in Switzerland for years now.

But extremely randomly my wife and I decided to get some Burger King for takeout. I don't even remember the last time we ate at BK but we did it tonight.

Anyways, wife sends me out with her order. A Whopper with cheese.

I get home and hand her the Whopper... Where's the Cheese? The Whopper doesn't have Cheese?! The Whopper never had cheese, it's why I said Whopper with Cheese? WHAT?! The Whopper never had Cheese? No! What?!

So. Did the Whopper never have cheese (standard)?!

Great question. I think the original did but that might have changed years ago. It wasn't too long ago that I was surprised when they asked if I wanted cheese.
Probably a Cost cutting effort to maintain basic price.

Good news- the Whooper is bad enough for you on it's own- skipping the cheese is a good thing :)

Bizarre. I just got one. I didn't eat fast food for like 10 years and the Whopper has been enticing me recently for some reason. They always ask if you want cheese on it when you order because it generally doesn't come with it.

What's weird is I don't think it's actually that bad for you in the grand scheme of things. It's got the bun, meat, pickles tomatoes onions lettuce mayo and ketchup. Apparently they've gone said no artificial ingredients. No corn syrup. No MSG. I think it's likely healthier than getting a hoagie.

The fries and diet cola are very unhealthy..

I think it is somewhere between 600-760 cals for a whopper depending on cheese. An Italian hero looks to be somewhere just over 800.
But...I somehow think that good fresh cold cuts at your local deli with a good bread has to be healthier than a fast food burger of any type.

What I've always wondered is how BK gets that flame-broiled flavor on their burgers. I mean is it literally because they grill them over flames? Or do they inject the patties with some sort of artificial flavoring? Either way I must admit, compared to other fast food burgers, I've always felt that the flame-broiled flavor of BK burgers is kinda good, ha. Not good for you... but kinda good, strictly from a "sh#tty fast food burger" standard lol.

The burgers are run through the broiler - it's a gas-fired appliance, about 8 feet long, with a steel conveyor. Put the patties on at one end, and they come out broiled on the other end.

Spoiler alert - the "grill marks" from the conveyor only appear on one side of the patty.

The burgers are held until the sandwich is constructed. At that time, the patty goes on the bun along with any cheese required and it gets microwaved for about 15 seconds. Then the rest of the sandwich is assembled. Part of the Whopper's taste profile and appeal is that hot components and cold components are kept separate until assembly, just prior to serving.

Didn't McD's try that with a sandwich back in the 80's. The customer got it in packaging that had 2 sides and the customer had to put the sandwich together???

As someone who worked at BK for about 3 weeks, yes, they are flame broiled. They are put on a conveyor belt/grill/chain type of thing over open flames. THrow the frozen patty in one end, take out the hot meat on the other.

The whopper never had cheese but a lot of onions and mayonnaise, what makes it so delicious. You have to ask for the cheese. You can get 2 for $6 but that’s a lot of calories. Way too much bread.

Very true. It doesn't matter if the Whopper never comes with cheese, you put some cheese on that damn Whopper! We're in the middle of Switzerland for God's sake - find some cheese for my Whopper!

Relating this to Rutgers....wife sent me to pick up a Jersey Mike's sub. I ordered something off the big menu board on the wall which listed lettuce, onions and tomatoes as components of the sub. All things she wanted. Maybe this was "The Italian" or something similar, but the specific sub name is not important.

When I saw them make it and begin to wrap it, I noticed they didn't include those things. I asked why, and they said I didn't ask for it "Mike's Way"

To me this is idiotic. I wanted exactly what I saw listed on the menu board. If I didn't want onions for example, I should be expected to say so.

The default components should be everything that's listed on the menu for that item.

Did they ask you if you wanted it Mike's Way? They usually ask and if you don't choose that option, you tell them what you want on it. I think Mike's Way also includes the sandwich dressing, which I usually don't get.

No, they did not. I ordered the sub expecting to get the ingredients listed on the menu. And when I saw they didn't include them I said I wanted those things, they seemed to be irritated that I didn't know to order it "Mike's way", which of course irritated me even more for the stupidity of that ordering process.

If I didn't want those ingredients either I would have said so, or I would have ordered a different sub that didn't include them on the menu.

Any other place, fast food or not, they don't withhold whatever is listed on the menu unless you ask for that.

This is an OT thread I can get behind.

I loved the McDLT. It was made fun of a bunch but I appreciated the lettuce not being soggy if you brought it home.

I used to work at Wendy's and at the time (late 80s), the burgers were pressed at the store and cooked to order. I would have to rank them 1 then and now. I used to love telling people that we didn't have onion rings or shakes and watching the confusion. Seeing people trying to drink frosty's with straws was hysterical.

McDonalds would be 2 but I mostly go quarter pounders.

I never really cared for BK as I would get indigestion or heartburn after eating them. Tasted fine going down.

Smashburger is my current favorite but they all closed by me. I would also go Shake Shack over any of the old guard.

Jersey Mike's is kind of like Domino's pizza. If I'm in the middle of the country I might order it in a pinch, but in NJ there are much better local options.

OK..You are Sharp.Can't remember about cheese.You never got cheese unless you asked got it Didn't like cheese on a burger Grilled cheese,yes.Burger No.These days you can get two Whoppers for 5 bucks.I have them add bacon to both which brings it to 7 bucks.Having one tonight as part of supper.With beer of course.They have been consistently good over the many years.Broiling adds special flavor it seems.
