Very big man with some very big feet. Took St. Bonaventure to the NCAA semis in 1970 before losing to Artis Gilmore and Jacksonville . Was the #1 pick that year in the NBA draft by the Pistons. Interesting note on that draft TWO Princeton players were picked in the first round that year: Geoff Petrie by Portland and John Hummer by Buffalo. Also both Calvin Murphy and Nate Archibald weren't selected until Round 2.

Had some good teams playing with Dave Bing and Jimmie Walker in Cobo Arena. He carried a lot of weight and not sure it was all muscle. Tough to handle down low for sure.

What a great player. I was so rooting for them to get a shot at UCLA in the NCAA tournament Bob's senior year. I remember feeling so bad that they did not get the chance. I think UCLA was still UCLA that year, but I think they were post-Kareem and pre-Walton that year and the Bonnies had been on a roll before Bob got hurt. RIP to a great one!

Yup....that was Steve Patterson at center for UCLA that year...I decided to stop being lazy, get my coffee and wake up...and look it up lol. Boy, did UCLA re-load the next year, though. I used to hate seeing them win all the time!

That teams back up center to Walton was Swen Nater who averaged about 5 points a game in college but was still a NBA first round draft pick.

Always remember him for his size 16’s. But also a great player in his day. Great battles with Willis.

R.I.P. Big man. Lanier-St. Bonaventure, Gilmore-Jacksonville, Murphy-Niagra, the Princeton guys. Shows how much the college game has changed since then in terms of who the powers are now.

That sux - one of my favorites. I met him several times while working at the NBA. He was one of the only regular guys you could talk with. As good as he was a player, he was a better human being. RIP Bob
Indeed, Lanier was a great guy. Back when the Nets played at the RAC I met him a few times.

Get a load of this memorable story... before a Nets/Pistons game, my friends and I were in the lobby of the Marriott in Somerset to get some autographs. The Pistons were staying there. As could be expected, we wanted Lanier's autograph the most. All the players, coaches, and staff walked through the lobby and then outside to the team bus...except Lanier. The bus left for the RAC without Lanier. We figured he must have made other arrangements to get to the arena. We were disappointed not to see him.

However, a few minutes after the bus leaves, Lanier comes down from his room. We tell him the bus left without him. He replied, paraphrasing, "You gotta be kidding!" We were all going to the game after leaving the hotel. My friends (brothers Jim and Chris) asked Lanier if he wanted a ride in their car to the arena. He said, "Absolutely." So they drove Lanier to the RAC. Lanier was known for being a chain smoker. He lit up in my friends' car on the short drive. The next day, Jim, Chris, and their parents went shopping together. Jim and Chris had to explain why the car smelled like smoke...lol

I was actually rooting for Notre Dame when they finally broke UCLA’s 88 game win streak in 1974. Probably the only time in my life that I have ever rooted for ND.

Great story. Loved those memories when the Nets played at the RAC. Sometimes the players would mingle with the fans before the game near the concession stands. As a teenager, I met George Johnson (center with the Rick Barry-like underhand free throw) and “Super John” Williamson (RIP) that way. They were both super cool. I asked them to autograph my program and both obliged and spoke with me. Williamson was eating RAC popcorn at the time and he handed it back to me all covered in popcorn butter…lol…great memories.

I remember when he shook my hand he took my whole hand in his - lol. Hands were huge. We were not allowed to ask any of the players or famous people we met for an autograph but I almost asked him when no one was around once because I was sure he would not care. I chickened out though - lol. Wish I had done it now.

BTW - The 2 nicest people I met were Rob and Dr. J. Two of the best!

OK, Geoff Petrie/John Hummer story! When I was recruited to play football at Princeton (1968), my host roomed with Petrie and Hummer in a suite of rooms. They were all sophomores at the time. Being from Chicago, I know zero about east coast bball. I say, "Man you guys are seriously tall. You on the basketball team?" They both laugh and Petrie says "Yep." Me: "Do you get in the games ever as sophomores?" (Honest to god, that is what I asked them.) Hummer says, "Sometimes. You coming to the game tonight? We might get in." Dillon gym was packed and I had a seat on the floor underneath the basket. Princeton wins something like 67-58 and Hummer and Petrie have about 50 points between the two of them. At the end of the game, Hummer gets a breakaway and makes an enormous slam dunk (which was illegal at the time -- he did it just for fun!). Columbia featured Jim McMillan and Heywood Dotson. You have to be a bit old to know those names. So I committed. Please respect my decision.

Great story. I remember that Columbia team. In that same draft McMillian went to the Lakers in the first round and had a nice NBA career. That same year Dotson lasted until round 7 to Phoenix but I don't think he ever played in the NBA. Back then the draft went about 15 rounds.
Another Jersey tie to that draft was that former St. Peter's coach Whitey Dukiet was drafted out of BC by the Lakers in the 11th round.

LOL....me, too. UCLA vs. ND....is it possible that they could both lose?! However, ND had Jersey boys playing, Shumate and Brokaw. That made it a little easier decision...though neither of them would come to RU!!!! Don't get me started on that stuff....

Walton is top 75. Walton is the Gale Sayers analogy for basketball. Walton was unguardable with Portland until the injuries. Even with the truncated career, the greatness is to much to deny just like Sayers. Even with the bad foot, contributed on the great 80's Celtics teams.

I used to attend Bill Foster and Harry Litwack‘s Pocono All Star Basketball camp every summer. It was awesome with great speakers and counselors. I have stories about Jim Valvano, Pete Carril, Al LoBalbo, George Raveling, Lou Hudson, Geoff Petrie, … One year someone brought a Bob Lanier sneaker, I think it was a referee and he passed it around to the campers during his talk. I’m 6’1” and that sneaker (size 21+) stretched from the tip of my middle finger and almost reached the elbow on my outstretched arm. The man had feet as big as a snowshoe!

PS - Bill Foster had hot looking daughters. They would hang around the camp pool while hundreds of sweaty campers would think of ways to sneak back to the pool… sort of the basketball equivalent of the car wash scene in “Cool Hand Luke”

As much as Walton was unguardable, his rebounding and passing made him the best big man at the time. The movement on that ‘77 Blazers team was second to none and Walton’s rebounding and passing made it go. Still my favorite NBA team of all time.

For our younger fans.

Actress was 27 year old Joy Harmon. Still alive today at age 82.
George Kennedy won an Oscar for this role and has the best line.
