On Sunday night my father would say to me and my brothers. you want to go to the
movies Saturday, you know
what to do. And we did. his shoes got polished every night, garbage out. car washed. lawn mowed. Saturday we each got a quarter. We walked two miles to the Lowes, ate, watched 3 cartoons, a short.
like the 3 stooges. two full
movies. then the fun really
began walking back home.
Climbing people's fences to take short cuts, getting yelled at. running the railroad tracks and try not to die. going thru the woods,
looking for snakes. Going thru factories' garbage looking for cool throw aways. But then running home the last mile before the street lights came on. If we didn't no movie the next week.
It’s sad to think that practically no kid today will ever have a day like that.

Kids don’t know where they live or the streets in their town due to cell phones.
Building tree forts, digging tunnels and creating short cut paths thru the woods.
Don’t think so, no desire either

I remember when the older boys would make a rope swing for everyone to use.

I can think of three off the top of my head that were awesome.

Some over water, some weren’t. But the fall from all was semi-deadly. LOL

The paths we made through our woods were where we lived when we weren't playing sports with the neighborhood kids. Everyone used them as bike paths but if you were to look at them today, you may wonder what we were thinking. The interesting thing is our neighborhood was fairly new back in those days. Think it was developed about 1960 or so...So most of our "older" brothers, did not have the chance to build these paths before us and we were the first group of kids to own the paths and the woods. And by the time we built them, there were 3 or 4 of use younger siblings to each older brother out there. There were more than a few times one of the older brothers would get pissed off and give chase to our group by foot or car, only to see 6 to 8 of us zip our banana seats into the small space between the fallen tree and into the paths...Those days really were great...of course...we would all spend the rest of the day scared shittless of coming out of the woods as it seemed our older brothers always had a sixth sense of where we were going to come out. lol

Now an adult has to be standing on the driveway waiting for the school bus, both sending them off and dropping them off.

Despite the bus stopping directly in FRONT of our house, both on the pick up and drop off.

Back in the day when we lived in Deal. Took the bus to Bond St School in Asbury and took the bus back. Got on and off on Norwood Ave (the main drag thru Deal). Got off wherever I wanted and walked home. (I was in Kindergarden.)

In 3rd grade in burb of Nashville I rode my bike to school with my Dalmation and he would come back in the afternoon and escort me home. The teacher would allow "Duke" to wait in the classroom for the trip home.

NOW:

Mad Dog driving to Sandy Hook Elementary School in Conn to drop off his Son for PM kindergarden.
Conn State Police and Local Police go past him at Mach 1 and sirens screaming. Road to school blocked off with police with AR 15 and shotguns. 2 hours later every Parent waiting nearby is sent to local Hospital. There he found his 2 Daughters safe and sound. IF the shooter had turned the other way as he shot his way into the school, they would have been likely shot.

And maybe with someone else too...👩👩‍🦰👱‍♀️
Weird thing...maybe around 8th grade...even though many of us were still living in the neighborhood- some kids went to private schools and others fell into other groups of friends. A part was also that my Mom had always been the common factor and the one that always gathered all the kids and she passed when I was 10...Teenage years were mostly spent outside the neighborhood and our group of about 10-12 kids grew apart.

This thread just got me a look from my wife...I just went out the back basement door where I usually walk the dogs in and out. About 20 feet above the door- I look up and see massive icicles that are hanging directly over the door and where we have our "doggie bag" garbage bin. What do I do...Start making snowballs and throwing them up to knock the icicles off the overhang...bam bam bam against the house...I hear load knocking and look up at the living room window above me...My wife knocking on it asking me wtf I am doing hahaha
