OT: Quail Hunting Guided Hunts

Does anyone have any recommendations? Looking for anywhere south of Jackson. There are a lot of options online, but I would like to hear if anyone has had a good or bad experience at any local hunts.

Long Leaf Plantation. Reece and crew run a top notch operation. Accommodations and food are as good as you’ll find anywhere in the country. Guides and dogs are great. It is a little pricey, but they don’t cut any corners, and I’ve never heard one person who left there unsatisfied.

You're paying for all of it. Dining and lodging. Quail aren't that expensive. I got friends that run canned and natural quail gigs (one in Alabama and one in TX). They buy canned birds for $4.50-$6.00 each. The bigger things like chukar are slightly more expensive.

Now if you are shooting naturally occurring quail in the Southeast, that a WHOLE different ball game. That can costs several $1000 just for a 3-4 birds. Very few places in the SE are able to maintain a huntable population of those.

I learned that millionaires strike a lot business deals on the golf course. Billionaires strike deals on natural quail hunts.

I'm not around any quail. The one place my friend ran in south alabama gave Auburn a $1,000,000 grant to do quail research on their property. Because of the partnership, they were essentially raising the quail for them. At really steep price. I assume it was a tax right off of sorts, but still. It was a chunk of coin.

The only place that I've seen quail flourish is in south Texas. And that's mostly blue quail. Not a lot of bob white.

Also another thing to ask is what your limit or allotment is for your hunt. Most of the time you will encounter holdover birds from previous hunts or they will set extra birds. Most places will charge extra for birds over your allotment usually at 5-10 dollars a bird. If you are hunting 3 or 4 people this can run up your tab very fast.

His name is Josh Quong.....he raises their birds from the egg and the birds are as close to wild as they can get ...this is a great time of year to get in on the quail and pheasant hunts....I may book one myself...

We still have quail around east central Mississippi, but with everyone planting trees it has changed a ton over the last 35 years. My uncle's place in Winston used to be loaded, but when they quit farming and planted pines they moved.

Used to have fields with sage grass during fall that you could easily kill a mess and never seem to run out. The tree farming has hurt hunting and now isn't making folks great money, too many planted.

Guy near me used to raise quail and a few times a year we would buy some to hunt in Quitman County. We started leaving a few
after every hunt in the brush hoping to grow our population. In the summer I would scare some up but it seemed like every fall the hawks would get on them so we eventually gave up. There are so many hawks around here now I can barely raise chicken at my barn.

Also interested. Had a buddy buy 20 of them at Christmas and turn loose on their property. I think they got 18 of the 20 and had an awesome time. Several learning to hunt young kids involved, so it was a lot less pressure than putting them out on a pay hunt for the first try. His German Shorthairs looked to be doing pretty good in the videos he sent me, especially for no training. Cost them $5/bird or $100 total to do it themselves.

I used to hear and see bob whites all the time at my Grandparents’ place in Oktibbeha Cty, up until the 90’s. Since then it has been very rare. I don’t know what caused the decline, if anything they have more cover than ever at that old farm.

Wasn’t an Avian Virus one of the big culprits of Bob White Quail decline? On a side note, I remember as a kid around 45 years ago there was a wild female Bob White that I named Polly that would roost inside my Grandparents house.... they would open the front door around sunset and she would fly in and roost on a door in their bedroom and every morning they would open the door and she would fly out...one day she never came back.

Pine tree planting is #1 issue in Mississippi.
Quail stay in small areas year after year, 40 to 50 acres. They live where open fields meet the woods. If you cover all your fields in trees, they don't do well because they don't migrate from their home area. So the less hay and row crop the fewer quail.

I met the head of QU for MS about 7-8 years ago and we got into a long conversation about this....He thought the number one thing was fire ants.....I got to thinking about that and the decline i had seen over the course of 3-4 years on my family farm with turkeys and turkey poults .....so I started spraying fire ants everywhere....i could spend hours riding around spraying them....after 2-3 years of steadily doing this, my turkey numbers exploded.....Im not saying that was a direct result, but its best i can go by.....I still spray as much as I can....

about 2 years ago, weyerhaeuser clear cut about 1000 acres about 1-2 miles south of us.....looks like a nuclear bomb was dropped.....since that time i have had a couple of small coveys of quail move into our farm....don't see them often though.....but also had an explosion of coyotes too.....

I was deer hunting in December and had a covey flush. First time I have seen a quail in the wild in many many years. This was in Choctaw county, MS.

I am old enough to remember when there were no fire ants where I live. My dad and I went quail hunting all the time. You couldn't make a dent in their numbers. Most fun I have ever had hunting. Fire ants came along and the quail population dwindled. I can't prove it, but I think fire ants had a lot to do with the loss of quail population. I mean, if there were 5 or 6 quail eggs on the ground, how long do you think it would take the fire ants to find them?
