If any of you are students or have children that are students. If they have more than 12 hours and take an online class, you will get hit with a distance learning fee. My son is taking computing technology online and only has 15 hours. Have a 1700$ charge for distance learning. I love my MSU but this is some BS. When they cant get into the classes they need due to scheduling conflicts.

Back in grad school (paying my own way, mind you) I would constantly get the "Give back to your University" and "Your donation will go toward scholarships" correspondence. All I could do was chuckle and shake my head.

You'll find this at most universities, we toured TAMU for with my son, the recruiters, when going over costs, said the unofficial motto was, "there's nothing free and there's no discounts."

I buy season football, baseball and basketball tickets. I have parking passes for two of those. I contribute to the Bulldog Club. My wife and I both graduated from MSU. Both my kids were in school there at the same time and have school loans due at the same time. I used to laugh when I would get those phone calls from the Foundation or whomever wanting me to contribute more to another MSU cause

Why should the University care how much you give to the Bulldog club? Two different organizations. You're basically saying you are spending so much on sports entertainment that you cannot afford to donate to the school.

It's your choice, of course, but the University doesn't benefit from your choice, so they may as well ask you to give. For the record, i prioritize my donations the opposite of you.

I had a guy at work who had made his first ever trip to the urologist complaining because it was a woman Dr. I told him he didn't know how lucky he was to have a Dr with small fingers, the guy I see is an ex basketball player who can palm a watermelon and has arthritis in all his joints in his hands.

When I was doing my required internship during my time at State...

...the company that I and several other State students were working for paid us through a stipend. Out of that lump sump, MS State could take out UP to 5%, the rest would go directly to us. Internship starts mid-January, and none of the State students had yet received a dime of the money. Company says they gave the money to MS State a month prior, and we were supposed to receive it from them. Two weeks pass. Then three weeks. Then a month, etc. Still no money, and we're trying to pay rent and live in a different city that's much more expensive that Starkville. Finally, after many phone calls and multiple parents writing multiple emails directly to Doc Foglesong, we receive our money. Of course the full 5% chunk is taken out, while all of the other schools with interns took out the absolute minimum.

That's my post bitching about State being cheap and inefficient.

Just spoke to a December grad about this who took a lot of online classes. She said if the course is offered by MSU starkville, meridian or gulf coast, there’s no additional cost for a full time student ( same cost as on-campus). But the “distance center” classes cost basically twice as much, like $300/hour more. So it’s important to choose the right courses when signing up.

This is correct. The campus the class is offered from is clearly marked when you register. And the extra cost is noted under ”fees” when you register. OP’s kid may have not been paying attention.

Thank you- I was thinking the same thing. Athletics isnt academics.

I did 3 internships(4 month, 8 month, 8 month) in the early '00s and never knew about this. My paychecks went to me and MSU didnt receive money for me working. What the 17 would they need 5% of my internship money for?
Wonder if this was a policy that was instituted in the couple years between when I left and when Doc came into power?

It was my understanding that since it was a stipend, it was tax free to us (the interns), so long as MS State took out a small percentage. They could take out up to 5%, but could also opt to take less. They chose the former.

ETA: the money was given to us in two lump sums. We didn't receive a standard paycheck.

I'm not "basically saying" anything of the sort. Do you see anywhere in there where it says I don't give anything else now? Nope you dont, read it again. It says "I used to laugh when they called". At the time I was paying off 2 diplomas from there in addition to helping fund sports and found it highly amusing the thought I could give more.
You're right it's "my choice of course" how I give, and I don't give a **** how you prioritize your giving just like you shouldn't care, judge, and comment about mine.
Edited to say same goes for you mstateglfr.

Two kids in school at the same time adds up to a fairly significant “contribution”.

You dont have to be so touchy about it. I don't care what you do with your money, as I said, but you're the one who posted about it on a public message board. I just don't think its "amusing" for the university to ask for donations from alums who are spending their money on sports.

FWIW, my donations to the Engineering school just make the University believe I can give even more. I decline, but I dont still find any humor in them asking.

Everyone has their priorities but 17 the academic side. I only donate to the athletic teams. I’ve donated enough to them.

Makes perfect sense- 17 the academic side of an academic institution!***

Pretty much. I’m only here for sports entertainment. My entire family and I have given enough to the academic side. Donate all of your money to your school of choice on campus if you want. They’ll take it. Not to mention Athletics is the heart of the school. If football sucks enrollment falls. Check our neighbors to the north.

Donate however you want. My point was not to criticize how anyone uses their own money. I just didn't understand why it was laughable for the University to ask for donations when you are giving money to the Bulldog club. He may as well say it is laughable for the March of Dimes to ask for donations because he already give generously to the American Heart Foundation.

So, the University should cross check how many children an alum has enrolled at State before sending out the form requests for Alumni donations?
