OT: Potential Winter Storm on 3/7-8

I posted a couple days ago about flight concerns for Wednesday. I was able to take the Tuesday night flight instead. Just arrived in Bangkok. [banana]

Not gonna happen. As I said, I'm out in King of Prussia and it's done here. Philly will see its last flakes in under an hour.

Yeah, I didn't think it would either, although it did come close for me. Had 4" OTG at 4 pm and ended up getting another ~4" - not quite 5-8", but not far off.

Ridiculous amount of snow, at least 15 inches in New Providence. Branches down all over the place. Power and cable keep blinking but still ok. Don't expect it to last the night.

The transformer on the poles across the street lit up the sky earlier for like 15 seconds..but we never lost it (yet). Man there is so much water in this snow it was iceberg blue in the middle of the dump.

Just lost power. Snowed in with small children and not heat. Hurrah!

Lost power in Cranford from about 4:45p to 7p. With three small kids in the House wasn’t so concerned about the lack of lights as no power = no heat. To Pse&Gs credit, they were on the scene within 30 mins or so.

I have no idea how to accurately measure but where I am in Ringwood I have well over 24". Measured on a table it was 29". On the deck railing 32". In the front yard 31".

Heard from people across town they did not get much over 20".

I measured a solid 12" in multiple places in my yard in Belle Mead (Montgomery Township near Township Line Road). It was likely even more as it was very heavy and had compacted (measured at 5:30 after it had wound down) . We also had many hours of heavy snow that didn't accumulate this morning. Our street was also impassable until an hour ago with many downed trees and branches.

Just got back in again, looks like 16-18 inches in NW Essex county, trees snapping over everywhere and now transformers blowing out flashing the night sky red.

Looks like the night of the West Va game about 5 years ago when they honored Eric, and they plowed the field at halftime.

Got 1.5" in the last hour, so we're up to 7.75" for the storm (about 7" on the ground, plus the 3/4" we had this morning. And still coming down. Can we get another hour out of this and get to 9"? Maybe.

So, just did my 2nd shoveling (not nearly as bad as the first - lower water content) in the middle of the last hurrah of the storm, so that was fun. Measured 7.75" on the ground, which, combined with the 3/4" from this morning, gives me a final tally of 8.5". So my 6" guess from 2 days ago ended up being better than my 13" guess this morning before things got going, lol.

Got too enamored with the models, I guess, and ratios were likely <10:1, but most importantly that surprise sleet/rain actually took away about 1" from my final measurement, as the snow compacted from about 3" to 2" at that time (need to talk with NOAA about that, as I don't think it's accurate to not account for that compaction due to rain, but the measurement guidelines don't appear to allow one to correct for that compaction), plus the 90 minutes of mostly missing snow probably took away another 2+", i.e., we could've had 11-12" if not for the sleet/rain. Oh well. Still a helluva storm for March, with some of the heaviest snow I've ever seen (3" per hour at times), plus THUNDERSNOW, which is pretty rare (have heard it 4 times in my life - Feb 77, Mar 93, Feb 2010 and today).

And of course, I assume I won a $100 bet with @Knightshift - need the official tally, but I saw at least one report of 7" in NB.

Some amazing snowfall amounts in the parts of NJ/PA/NY that got the really good bands. Unfortunately not near 95 from NB to NYC/LI, but large parts of NW NJ, NE NJ, Somerset/Hunterdon, the NW suburbs of Philly and even places that weren't suppose to get more than a few inches like the Jersey side of the Delaware from Trenton to DE and then Newcastle County, DE. Many places reporting 16-24". So, not a great forecast for quite a few locations, but a great forecast, from a big picture perspective in recognizing the potential of this storm - storms like this almost always jackpot some and underperform for some and predicting those bands is nearly impossible (and will likely remain like that for a long time).

Edit: updated NWS amounts below - in general, ignore any reports before about 5 pm, as those would usually be incomplete reports before the end of the storm, except for maybe the PA/SNJ area.

one thing is for sure, Metuchen going to come up small in the snowglobe competition for this storm

oh yeah, missed the great bands, but 8.5" is still a pretty good storm for March - thought you would've had more than 8-9" as I thought you got part of the death band. In addition to the one odd report in Hillsborough (the Sourland Mt guy), someone in Green Brook reported 22" and nobody else nearby got more than 12". Wonder if he was up on Washington Rock.

So, just did my 2nd shoveling (not nearly as bad as the first - lower water content) in the middle of the last hurrah of the storm, so that was fun. Measured 7.75" on the ground, which, combined with the 3/4" from this morning, gives me a final tally of 8.5". So my 6" guess from 2 days ago ended up being better than my 13" guess this morning before things got going, lol.

Got too enamored with the models, I guess, and ratios were likely <10:1, but most importantly that surprise sleet/rain actually took away about 1" from my final measurement, as the snow compacted from about 3" to 2" at that time (need to talk with NOAA about that, as I don't think it's accurate to not account for that compaction due to rain, but the measurement guidelines don't appear to allow one to correct for that compaction), plus the 90 minutes of mostly missing snow probably took away another 2+", i.e., we could've had 11-12" if not for the sleet/rain. Oh well. Still a helluva storm for March, with some of the heaviest snow I've ever seen (3" per hour at times), plus THUNDERSNOW, which is pretty rare (have heard it 4 times in my life - Feb 77, Mar 93, Feb 2010 and today).

And of course, I assume I won a $100 bet with @Knightshift - need the official tally, but I saw at least one report of 7" in NB.

Some amazing snowfall amounts in the parts of NJ/PA/NY that got the really good bands. Unfortunately not near 95 from NB to NYC/LI, but large parts of NW NJ, NE NJ, Somerset/Hunterdon, the NW suburbs of Philly and even places that weren't suppose to get more than a few inches like the Jersey side of the Delaware from Trenton to DE and then Newcastle County, DE. Many places reporting 16-24". So, not a great forecast for quite a few locations, but a great forecast, from a big picture perspective in recognizing the potential of this storm - storms like this almost always jackpot some and underperform for some and predicting those bands is nearly impossible (and will likely remain like that for a long time).

Dick of a neighbor slid all the snow off his car onto/near my car instead of pushing it off from the other side into the giant pile of snow people were shoveling into.

My dick of a neighbor beats your dick of a neighbor. A big piece of his evergreen fell into the road. He's right at the end of his drive cleaning off his car. He doesn't bother to pull the big branch to the side. I get a call from his girlfriend telling me there is s guy in my ditch. He went around the branch into it. She can't reach her man so she called me.

I proceed to go outside and with the help of a guy in a truckcsnd another we got the guy out..after about 45mins. The whole time this dick,of a guy just continues to clean his car and driveway15 feet away! Never even looked over.

Another car actually stopped and moved the branch while we were helping the guy. Now THAT is a dick. (We're not exactly friends before..but wow)

Probably not as much as you think. I believe many of those are taken from message boards and not just Joe Schmo on FB - and I know some of the NWS mets are regulars on those boards, so they might know how trustworhty some of the posters are.

I didn't have power for a week during Sandy, still have power for now hopefully it stays that way. Really, it all happened in about two hours from 3-5pm... just crazy how it picked up and suddenly crack crack everywhere from branches after barely anything.

Rutgers is apparently still opening tomorrow, bright and early. People aren't happy. Wouldn't be surprised to see Profs cancel classes anyway.

I didn't measure but didn't seem like that much to me. I never really measure just eyeball what accumulates on the deck and such. On the deck I'd say 6-7 after maybe 1.5 at most until 3, the driveway I'd say about 6 or so after maybe 3/4 of an inch until 3 or so as well but the end of the drive was just a couple inches. Unusual gradient, never had that happen before. Usually just even across. The posts above said 4 but that seems kind of low to me and then 10 seems high as far sticking/accumulating snow. Who knows whatever it is 3-5pm sucked.

I think about 1/4 of the township is without power. I believe 3 schools without power as well.

Thought I posted this around 10:30, but fell asleep instead, lol. Just woke up. Anyway, here ya go...

My last post of the day. Needless to say, I'm spent after several days of tracking, posting and then watching and enjoying today's storm (not to mention shoveling). Not a lot of sleep involved. Anyway, thought this was a nice map made from the NWS storm reports - really shows where that death band was (in pink), as well as the biggest bust of the storm - the unexpectedly low snowfall amounts east of the NJTPK from about Woodbridge to Hackensack, including Newark, Hoboken, JC, and most of NYC, where only 2-5" generally fell.

No model had these areas at less than 10" other than the GFS and it had that amount due to rain and that wasn't the issue - the issue was a combination of subsidence, where those areas simply never got the intensity of snowfall, due to all the intensity being sucked up to the west, borderline surface temps, leading to melting (with less intensity, more melting), and poor ratios (supposedly, CPK had 1.2" fall as snow, but only got 3.1" on the ground; urban heat island didn't help, either). I didn't know it at the time, but in hindsight, I was lucky to get the 8.5" I got, as just 5 miles east of me in Perth Amboy and Carteret, they got 4-5". NYC snow lovers are are ready to to attack the NWS office in Upton with pitchforks, lol, as much of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and SI only got 2-4" (3.2" in Central Park).

One last thought. Don't sleep on the 3/12 threat. Looks to go to our south, but 1 or 2 models over the past day or so have been showing the storm heading up the coast as a snowy nor'easter and even now a couple of models show a modest hit south of 195. This one has potential to come further north and if it does it would be significant.

Driving home last night on Rt 23 South entrance ramp in Wayne was hampered by a tractor trailer laying on it's side blocking the entrance ramp. Had to turn around and go wrong way on one way long entrance ramp to make my way back. Was a nightmare driving, cars stuck all over the place. I left work because we lost power at work. Thank goodness kept power at home, but my snowblower died (auger won't turn) and I had to shovel (live on a corner). Heavy snow (in my 60s now, so it's heavier - lol)....

We used to live in MJ, right near the HS, off Welcome Farms Rd. My sister in law still lives over there and she said they lost power yesterday as well. Ironically when we evacuated for Irene we went up there and it was worse than Ocean City, you guys lost power for a few days which is why we stayed for Sandy.
