Looking to get a pool table for the family for Christmas. But after looking around, slate pool tables are out of my budget. I’ve seen plenty of wood pool tables that look good and have good reviews. But some people say don’t get a pool table unless it is slate. Anybody have experience with non-slate pool tables and if they are a waste of money, or are they fine for just family and friends?

If it’s something you plan on keeping then slate is the only way to go. If it’s something that you will get tired of in a year then non slate is a lot lighter. I realize it’s a Christmas present but if you can be patient start checking market place and CL and you can steal a slate table from someone who just wants it moved.

Check out Craigslist and Facebook marketplace. For every person looking for a pool table, treadmill, or piano, there are three that want to get rid of theirs.

Do not buy the cheap pool tables!!!! Get slate. And for the love of everything holy get one that isn't made of particle board in the legs and sides. And do not buy one from any big box if it's a Christmas present. 80% of big box ones will have broken pieces in them, which means no Christmas present.

There used to be a guy that bought old bar tables and refurbished them around Jackson. That is the way to go.

My sister pretty much gave away an 8' slate pool table a couple of weeks ago just to get rid of it. Probably cost $3000 when it was new. Don't be afraid to make a really low ball offer on a used one.
